23、Do you sometimes use your phones to take photos of nice food and then put them online(网上)? A lot of people like doing that. But Clear Plate, a WeChat(微信) program(程序), asks you to take pictures of your empty(空的) plates after a meal. The program’s AI(人工智能) “sees” that your plates are empty and gives you points. You can use these points to buy yourself gifts or give away the points to buy meals for children in poor areas.

Liu Jichen, 23, a college student, starts the program. Liu says technological innovation(技术创新) is a good way to cut down food waste(浪费). He puts together a 20-member team to work on the program. To teach the program’s AI how to recognize empty plates, the team spends half a year collecting 100,000 photos from restaurants in 10 cities.

Liu and his team also start an activity called Clear Your Plate in Chinese colleges. Students try hard to see who can get the most points in Clear Plate. Now more than 1,000 schools take part in the activity and save a lot of food.
