Animals are unlike people. They can't speak. They are not able to express themselves even if they feel pain and sadness. 【1】 Now ,we can learn from Sophie Smith and be animals' true friends— a volunteer working for animals.
On Feb. 3, 2014, a girl from Massachusetts, the US, said that circuses(马戏团)should no more use hooks(钩子)or chains on elephants. And the government should do something
【2】 They can’t walk freely. And chains bring them great pain. Some people even use hooks when they train elephants. The hooks are sharp and bring elephants much more pain. Circus actors even push a hook into an elephant's body to move it along during a show. “After some time, the elephant's skin breaks down. It feels the pain, but it can’t say anything. It can' t say no to those cruel people." Sophie told local newspaper Marblehead Reporter. She also said that it would be bad for children.
【3】 Back in 2011, as a sixth-grader, she searched for different animal protection groups online and helped them.
So when she spoke in front of 70 people at the state house, Sophie was not afraid. She was full of courage.
“Elephants aren’t treated with kindness. 【4】 I speak for them with my voice, and my love." she said.
A. Since they cannot talk, I speak for them. B. They just need people’s help. C. Some elephants are kept in chains. D. Sophie’s love toward animals started a long time ago. |
24、Real Friend,Real Meaning
We can make mistakes at any age. Some mistakes we make are about money. But most mistakes are about people. “Did Jerry really care when I broke up with Helen?” “When I got that great job, did Jim really feel good about it, as a friend? Or did he envy my luck?” When we look back, doubts like these can make us feel bad. But when we look back, it’s too late.
Why do we go wrong about our friends or our enemies? Sometimes what people say hides their real meaning. And if we don’t really listen, we will miss the meaning behind the words. Suppose someone tells you, “You’re a lucky dog.” and that’s friendly. But a “lucky dog”? There’s a bit of envy (嫉妒) in those words. Maybe he doesn’t see it himself. But bringing in the “dog” bit puts you down a little. What he may be saying is that he doesn’t think you observe your luck.
Just think of all the things you have to be “thankful for” is another noise that says one thing and means another. It could mean that the speaker is trying to get you to see your problem as part of your life as a whole. But is he? Wrapped up in this phrase is the thought that your problem isn’t important. It’s telling you to think of all the starving people in the world when you haven’t got a date for Saturday night.
How can you tell the real meaning behind someone’s words? One way is to take a good look at the person talking. Do his words fit the way he looks? Does what he says agree with the tone of voice? His posture (姿态)? The look in his eyes? Stop and think. The minute you spend thinking about the real meaning of what people say to you may save another mistake.
【1】What mistakes often make us feel bad except money according to the writer?
A. Mistakes about people.
B. Mistakes about housework.
C. Mistakes about work.
D. Mistakes about our families.
【2】The underlined word "it" in the second paragraph refers to ______.
A. being friendly B. a bit of envy
C. lucky dog D. your luck
【3】We can know the real meaning of our friends’ words by ______ while listening.
A. asking them to say slowly
B. looking in their eyes
C. repeating their words
D. writing down their words
【4】What does the writer want to tell us in the passage?
A.We often make mistakes when we talk with others.
B.We should think carefully before talking.
C.What to do when we are talking with others.
D.Try to avoid mistakes while communicating with people.
25、 Agatha Christie is possibly the world’s most famous detective(侦探的) story writer. She wrote about 80 novels, and her sales (4 billion copies of her novels) was over those of William Shakespeare. However, behind her works was a shy woman whose life was often lonely and unhappy.
She was born in 1890 in Devon, the third child of Clarissa and Frederick Miller, and grew into a beautiful and sensitive(敏感的) girl. She didn’t go to school but was educated by her parents. Her father taught her maths through stories and games, and her mother encouraged her to write by her own stories. Unfortunately her father died in 1901 when she was 11, and both she and her mother were very sad.
When World War I came in 1914, she became a nurse in a hospital, which was very useful to her later work. Many of the murders(杀人犯) in her books were carried out by a clever use of medicine, showing how much she had learnt about them as a nurse.
She wrote her first detective novel, The Mysterious Affair at Styles, in 1916. And it was published in 1920. In this novel she introduced Hercule Poirot, the Belgian detective who appeared in many later novels. Her other main detective was Miss Marple, who was from Agatha’s grandmother and her circle of friends. Christie’s stories keep the reader guessing who the murderer is until the very end of the story.
In 1914, at the beginning of the war, she married Archibald Christie, but the marriage was unhappy. It didn’t last and they left each other in 1926. It was a very difficult time for her, as her much-loved mother had died earlier that year. Agatha suffered a lot and one night she drove her car and disappeared.
She went missing for eleven days and was finally found in a hotel in Harrogate, in the North of England. Agatha only wanted staying alone but the newspapers had given her a hard time over her driving the car and disappearing. She decided never to let them enter her private life again
She enjoyed a very happy second marriage to Max Mallowan who she met in Baghdad and married in 1930. Her detective skills were a help to him in his work in Syria and Iraq. By successfully staying out of the newspapers, she found happiness with her husband. Her best novels were written after 1930, and she continued writing until 1973. She died peacefully in 1976.
【1】What does the underlined word “her” refer to?
A. Clarissa. B. Miss Marple.
C. Agatha. D. Agatha’s grandmother.
【2】Why did Agatha drive her car and disappear?
A. She felt terrible and went to hospital. B. She wanted to stay alone for some time.

C. To show us a history of a war. D. To introduce us a famous writer.
26、 Scientists think that there has been life on the earth for hundreds of millions of years. However, we haven't found life on other plants yet. Why not?
The Earth is a planet and it goes around the Sun. Seven other planets also go around the sun. None of them has an environment with air, so people and living things cannot grow. The Sun and its planets are called the solar system(太阳系). The solar system is a small part of our galaxy(星系).
But scientists have discovered many other galaxies in the universe. But they are far away and their light has to travel for many years to reach us. It is hard to understand how large the universe is.
So far, scientists have sent lots of spaceships to look at other plants in our solar system, and some spaceships have gone beyond the solar system. However, no one has discovered any life in space yet.
But why has no one from other plants sent us a message? Have they tried to send information to us? With so many stars in the universe, are we alone, or is there life out there in space? We don't know yet.
【1】How many planets go around the sun?
A.Seven B.Eight C.Nine D.Ten

27、As kids, we learn how to write, maybe play a musical instrument and draw. So why don’t we learn to code(编码) computer programs too? What coding has in common with writing, playing music and creating art is that it lets you bring your ideas to life. Coding is all about creativity and that’s why I love it.
Creating with code
CoderDojo helps young people around the world to learn computer programming for free. When I went to my first CoderDojo class in Dublin City University in Ireland, at age nine, I didn’t know anything about coding or even what it was. But I remember making my very first web page that first day, and being surprised that I could create such a thing. It was a great feeling that I think every young person should experience!
By going to CoderDojo every week, I learned how to make websites, apps and games. One of my apps is called Auto-Journalist. It can help journalists(记者) and interviewees do interviews even if they are both really busy or live in different time zones. It is still in development, and I have showed it at an event called Coolest Projects Awards, where young people get to show the public what they have created with code. It’s so much fun to share one’s creations, and to see what everyone else has made too.
Learning environment
For the past three years I have also been helping to teach other young people at CoderDojo DCU. In recent years I have also noticed many more girls attending CoderDojo DCU to try out coding. This has a lot to do with the CoderDojo girls’ classes—girls and young women take part in it with their friends, and it doesn’t feel like coding is a “boy thing”. It is really wonderful to see this, because we need more girls and women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths). It’s a good way to learn more about technology.
Start early
One of the main things I have learned in the last few years is that coding is not only for adults, coding is for young people, too. And when you are a child it is a great time to start coding, because your imagination is the limit for what you can create!
Want to learn more? Find out if there is a CoderDojo near you at www.coderdojo.com or set one up yourself! Also check out Code.org which has lots of fun drag-and-drop coding games.
