  • 24、Edith Cavell was born in a little English village. She was a clever, hard-working girl and did well at school, especially in music and French. After she left school, her first job was to take care of the children of a rich family in Belgium(比利时). The language they spoke was French, so she found that her school studies were useful. Everyone needs a break, and holidays are a great way to take a break and enjoy a good book. Summer vacation is coming so this is the perfect time to discuss some great English literature to take on a long train journey while you’re hanging out with the family.

If you’re at the beginner level, there are two choices: reading a children’s book or reading a book that you’ve read in Chinese translation. This will help you understand better, since you’ve already known the story. If you’re at the middle level, popular books like novels and mysteries are good choices, as they are attractive enough to increase the possibility of your understanding of the book. For top readers, science books, classical books or prize winners, such as Nobel, Pulitzer are good choices.

The most important thing is to pick a book that you’re really interested in. When I pick up a new book in Chinese, the first few pages are always really hard to get through, as I have to get used to the way the writer uses the language. But after that, things get a lot easier, especially if I like the story.

Another great way to help you read in the holiday is to find a friend who’s interested in reading the same book. You can make goals that you both want to achieve and talk about the book with each other by QQ or e-mail. I’m doing that with my friend Laura. We’ve done this since we were classmates in Chinese at college.

Some quick recommendations: Harry Potter, start with the first book and go on from there; the Narnia series; and if you like horror, Stephen King’s novels are always unusual and fun. But really you should just find a topic or writer that you’re interested in, and the rest will go from there. Happy reading!

  • 27、   Every year on 15th October, over 200 million people around the world take part in Global Handwashing Day. But why do we have a day for something we do all the time? Well, research shows that not enough people often wash their hands with soap. Experts believe that this leads to the deaths of millions of people every year.

Sidibe, a public health expert says soap is the most beautiful invention in public health'. Washing your hands with soap can have a huge impact on reducing (减少) the spread of diseases. Handwashing with soap prevents babies from getting ill and keeps children healthy and in school.

However, washing hands with soap does not happen as often as you might think. This is partly because there aren't enough resources (资源) in poorer countries, but it's also because for many people, handwashing is simply not part of their everyday life. It's not easy to get people to change habits they learned in early childhood -- but this is what Global Handwashing Day wants to do.

In 2008, the Indian cricket team joined around 100 million Indian schoolchildren in washing their hands to promote (促进) the first ever Global Handwashing Day. Every year since then, many different events have been held around the world. In 2014. Global Handwashing Day was used in the fight against Ebola, a very serious disease, with events held in affected (受感染的) African countries.

Today, local and national leaders continue to use the day to spread the message about the importance of clean hands. The hope is that handwashing becomes a necessary part of people's lives and improves the health of millions around the world.

    1Who started Global Handwashing Day?

    A.Public health experts. B.The Indians. C.African schoolchildren.

2What does the underlined word "impact" mean?

3What's the main idea of the last paragraph?

A.Washing hands with soap is good for public health.

B.Washing hands with soap doesn't become part of people's lives.

C.People all over the world are encouraged to wash hands with soap.

4Which statement is NOT TRUE according to the passage?

A.A few people's unwillingness to wash hands with soap everyday lead to many people's death.

B.People in different countries join in Global Handwashing Day.

C.Global Handwashing Day's purpose is only wanting people to wash hands without soap.

5What would be the best title for the passage?

A.Learning to Use Soap. B.Changing Your Habits C.Living a Healthy Life.
