  • 25、   When taking an elevator, do you often push the “close” button? You hope by pushing it, the elevator door will close faster. But what if the button is actually fake(假的)?

Karen Penafiel is the executive director(执行董事)of the US National Elevator Industry. She said that elevators’ “close” buttons are a complete trick, at least in the US, and that doors will not close any faster no matter how hard you push.

In the 1990s the Americans with Disabilities Act(《美国残疾人法案》)was passed in the US. It means all elevators have to stay open long enough to allow disabled(残疾的)people to enter. Only US firefighters and elevator workers can really use the buttons with special keys.

But the buttons aren’t completely useless. According to psychologists(心理学家), fake buttons can make you feel better. They give you a sense of control that can help reduce stress. That’s why some other buttons in our lives are fake, too.

For example, many offices in the US have fake thermostats(温控器). People may feel better when they think they can control the temperature in their workspace.

You were told that traffic light buttons could help make the traffic signals change faster. But they may not really work either.

However, even when people know these little “white lies”, they still push fake buttons. As long as the doors finally close, it seems worthy.

John Kounios is a psychology professor at Drexel University in the US. He told The New YorkTimes that he always pushes the traffic light buttons. “After all, I’ve got nothing else to do while waiting. So why not push the button on the off chance that this one will work?”

1You push the “close” button in the US, the elevator door will ________.

A.close immediately B.not be completely open

C.play a trick on you D.not close as fast as you wish

2The US, in order for disabled people to go in safely, ________.

A.elevator workers will press the “open” button for them

B.they will be given a special key to use in the elevators

C.all elevators are designed to open long enough

D.no “close” button is fixed on the elevators

3Which of the following is NOT mentioned as fake?

    A.Thermostat buttons. B.Elevator buttons.

    C.Traffic light buttons. D.Power buttons.

4There are quite a few fake buttons in our lives because they can ________.

    A.control people’s senses B.help people feel better

C.control the temperature D.tell “white lies”

5The underlined words “on the off chance” in the last paragraph most probably mean “______”.

A.with the little hope B.without any plan

    C.with a great opportunity D.without any possibility

6The best title for the passage is ________.

    A.Button pushing society B.Useless buttons

C.Buttons for disabled people D.Fake elevator buttons

Street food can be found in many countries. But does that mean you can both buy and eat your food in the street?

Japan, especially some of its popular tourist cities, is struggling to answer this question. Kamakura is one of them. Last April, the city made a law asking visitors not to eat while walking. One major concern is rubbish from packaging and leftover (吃剩的) food.

According to the Kamakura government, the law, which has been posted in public areas, was created to remind travelers of the problem rather than to punish them. There are no fines or punishment for people who break the law.

Concerns about eating while walking aren’t just about messy clothes and streets. Many Japanese people believe it is poor manners to walk or do other activities while eating because it means you’re not showing enough respect and thanks to your food.

The problem of tourists eating in the street isn’t a concern to Japan only. In a section of the city center of Florence, Italy, visitors are not allowed to eat on sidewalks, roadways or in front of shops and houses. At the same time, Bangkok, a city famous for its street food, has been trying to find out what to do with its outdoor markets and food stalls (货摊).

A.Visitors are not allowed to waste food.

B.Visitors are not allowed to buy street food.

C.Visitors are not allowed to eat while walking.

D.Visitors are not allowed to throw rubbish everywhere.

A.they will be fined B.they will help clean up

C.they won’t be punished D.they won’t be allowed to come again

3How many reasons are mentioned to explain why the law in Kamakura is made?

    A.Two. B.Three. C.Four. D.Five.

4Which of the following questions is answered in the passage?

A.How much food is wasted in Kamakura every day?

B.Do Japanese people think it’s proper to eat while walking?

C.What will happen to visitors if they eat on sidewalks in Florence?

D.What will Bangkok do to deal with its outdoor markets and food stalls?

5What can we learn from the passage?

A.People in Kamakura don’t welcome visitors.
