六、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Old habits, especially bad ones, can be hard to break.

People often make fun of New Year's resolutions (决心). However, resolutions present a big opportunity for self-improvement. Fortunately, social science has some ideas about how to start a good habit and stick to it.

Gary Charness and Uri Gneezy, two scientists at the University of Chicago, did some research, where 120 students were asked to take part in an experiment about exercise habits, and each of them would get $175 in the end. The students were randomly assigned (随机分配)  to three groups. The first group got the money for just giving researchers permission (允许) to record their gym attendance (出勤). The second group gave permission, but had to go to the gym at least once the next month. The final group gave permission and had to go to the gym eight times that month.

Unsurprisingly, the group that had to make eight gym visits to get paid exercised more than the other two groups. After the payments stopped, these students kept going to the gym at higher rates (频率). They went to the gym about twice as often as the other two groups.

In another study, researchers invited 151 students to work out in the gym, and randomly assigned 75 to a "temptation-bundling" group. As they exercised, they listened to the start of an attractive audio-novel (有声小说).At the end of their workout, students were told that if they wanted to hear what happened next in their book, they would have to come back to the gym .They could only listen to the audio-book while exercising. The other 76 students also completed the first workout but without any kind of temptation bundle.

It turned out that the students in the temptation-bundling group visited the gym 27% more often than the control group over the next seven weeks. Sadly, the temptation-bundling trick fell apart over the Thanksgiving holiday when the gym was closed.

The studies show that trying something new quite often for as little as a month can kick-start a lasting change in behavior. Moreover, "temptation-bundling" may also be a useful method for changing behavior, particularly when used together with other methods. Even if you cannot promise yourself to stick with something for long, there is a huge benefit in putting in a lot of energy for a few weeks. It may pay off for longer than you think. So, why not challenge yourself with next New Year's resolution?

1What can we learn from the two studies?

A.The students got different payments according to their gym attendance.

B.The temptation-bundling group loved audio-novels more than the other group.

C.The students who exercised more often at first were more likely to keep working out.

D.27% of students in the temptation-bundling group exercised more often than before.

2The third paragraph is mainly about ________.

A.what was found in the research

    B.how the research was performed

C.why the scientists did the research

D.who took part in the research

3The underlined word "temptation-bundling" in Paragraph 5 probably means ________.

A.forming new habits by trying something you didn't like before

B.pushing yourself by doing two tasks at the same time

C.improving your workout skills by listening to audio-books

D.connecting something you like with something you have to do

4What is the writer's main purpose in writing this passage?

A.To encourage people to go to the gym more often.

B.To present a new way to do scientific research.

C.To offer advice on how to develop a good habit.

D.To stress the importance of New Year's resolutions.

  • 22、   When I was twelve, I wrote the first note to my mother, "Hi, Mom! Have a nice day! Love, Marie!", and I folded the note into her change purse (零钱包).

My mother worked as a cleaner in a clothing factory. I knew that when she bought meals in the dining hall, she would have to look for change in her purse. I didn't know that she would keep that note, and always carry it with her.

From the day that I carefully folded the small piece of paper into my mother's change purse, she and I left each other secret notes. They would be put in the fridge, under a lamp, or beside the TV set. I even found one hidden in my shoe. From the outside, our notes may have been general records of our days, ideas and wishes. But to my mother and me, they were a lifeline-a special communication with each other that no one else shared.

On October 20, 2009, my mother died after a long illness. I stood near her bed, holding her hand. I didn't cry the day my mom died, and I didn't cry a week later when I went to collect her things. I was so thankful that she no longer had aches and pains.

Recently, I found a note that my mom had left me. It had been hidden in the pages of my favorite childhood book for years. It read, "Dear Marie, I love you always. Miss you a lot. Don't forget me. Be happy! Love, Mom" That day, I cried.

1Marie folded the note into Mom's purse __________.

A.so that her mother could see it when she bought meals

B.so that her mother could keep it

C.in order to remind her mother to bring more change

D.because it was her first note to her mother

2Which is RIGHT about "notes" according to the passage?

A.Mom lost the first note from Marie.

B.Marie found the last note from Mom when she was collecting Mom's things.

C.Marie and Mom hid notes to play a game.

D.Notes became a special way of communication between Mom and Marie.

3Here in the passage, "general" is the closest to "____________"in meaning .

    A.special B.common C.interesting D.sweet

4From the passage we can infer that __________.

    A.Mom was a single parent

B.Mom didn't write notes to Marie during her illness

    C.Marie didn't feel sad about Mom's death

D.Mom suffered (遭受) a lot of aches and pains before death

5What's the best title of passages?

A.The First Note B.My Mother C.Love in Notes D.The Last Note

  • 23、   Mary Jo Ray turned 113 in May, 2008. She was the twelfth oldest person in the world. Ray was one of the few people who lived to more than 110 years old. We often call them centenarians. “She often drinks milk. She hardly gets angry with others and is always happy. So she is in good health. I think her reason for long life is drinking milk every day and trying to be happy,” said her granddaughter(孙女).

Her doctor, Dr. Perls, said another reason for Ray’s long life is her genes (基因). She got them from her parents. He said, “These genes can keep you in good health and let you live longer. People can usually live to about 80 years old. Those with the right genes can live to more than 100 years. They also pass those genes to their children. So if a person’s parents live long, he or she will probably live long, too.” Dr. Perls also said, “You may not have those genes. But if you don’t smoke, don’t drink too much, and do exercise or do other things to make yourself relaxed and happy, you still can live long."

    B.how people can live better

  • 24、   The most common disease in the world is the cold. It often starts with a sore throat(咽部疼痛). You sneeze and your nose runs. You usually have a headache, too. Often you have a cough later. It’s not a serious disease, but you can feel quite bad.

There isn’t good medicine for a cold, but you can take some medicine to make you feel better. It is good to rest, and to drink a lot of water, too. A doctor once told me, “With the right medicine, a cold will last for seven days. With no medicine, it will go on for a whole week!”

Where does our medicine come from? A long time ago, people found that some plants made them feel better. They ate leaves, roots, fruits or seeds of plants. We know the juice of lemons makes a sore throat feel better. In modern times, scientists have studied many plants, and found out what chemicals are in them.

Many kinds of our medicines today are made from those chemicals. There are some diseases that we can’t treat yet. But because of modern medicine, people now live longer than their grandparents.

1From this article, a cold often starts with _______.

A.a pain in your throat B.a cough C.feeling a little tired D.a fever

2What should we do when we catch a cold?

C.We should wait for a whole week.

D.We only need a good rest.

3What makes a sore throat feel better?

A.Examining of a doctor. B.The juice of oranges.

C.Something inside lemons. D.The root of a plant.

4What is the real meaning of the doctor’s words?

A.There is almost no medicine that can cure the cold.
