  • 26、Four unusual festivals around the world

    Wife Carrying Competition—Sonkajärvi, Finland

Although the exact origins of the tradition are unknown because of its long history, but today, wife carrying is practiced around the world. Participants (参与者) are allowed to carry their wives in various ways— including piggyback or fireman’s carrying. The prize is awarded based on the wife’s weight in beer.

    Monkey Buffet (自助餐) Festival—Lopburi, Thailand

You may consider how a monkey would taste, but this is a buffet for monkeys. The local monkeys in the Lopburi are gifted with a feast of tons of fruits, vegetables, cakes, and candies every November. After the monkeys are given their treat, youths dressed up as monkeys perform dances. The festival first occurred in 1989, run by a local businessman to drive up tourism in Lopburi. Luckily for him and the monkeys, it worked.

    Mud Festival—Boryeong, ROK

The festival is not historic by any means— the first one took place in 1998— and it was originally created as a marketing event for Boryeong mud cosmetics (化妆品). The mud from the Boryeong is considered rich in natural minerals and is used to make beauty products. Popular activities include a mud pool, mud slides and mud skiing.

    Tomato Festival—Bunol, Valencia, Spain

The festival has run annually in August during a weeklong celebration in Bunol since 1945, when a noisy crowd took the tomatoes from a vegetable stall and started a food fight. The hour-long tomato fight used up about 145,000 kg of tomatoes in 2015. Since 2013 it has been a ticketed event to limit participants to just 20,000.

  • 27、   Grandpa Nybakken loved life--especially when he could play a trick on somebody. But on a cold Saturday in downtown Chicago, Grandpa felt that God played a trick on him.

Grandpa worked as a carpenter. On this particular day, he was building some boxes for the clothes his church was sending to an orphanage abroad. On his way home, he failed to find his glasses. He remembered putting them there that morning, so he drove back to the church. His search proved fruitless.

Suddenly it hit him that the glasses had slipped out of his pocket unnoticed and fallen into one of the boxes. His brand new glasses were heading for China! The Great Depression was at its height, and Grandpa had six children. He had spent twenty dollars for those glasses that very morning.

“It’s not fair,” he told God. “I’ve been very faithful in giving off my time and money to your work, and now this.”

Later, the director of the orphanage was on vacation in the United States. He came to speak at my grandfather’s small church. Grandpa sat in his usual seat.

“But most of all,” he said, “I must thank you for the glasses you sent last year.”

“Even if I had the money, there was simply no way of replacing those glasses. A long with not being able to see well, I experienced headaches every day, so my co-workers and I were much in prayer about this. Then your boxes arrived. My staff removed the covers and they found a pair of glasses lying on the top.” After a long pause, he continued, “Folks, it was as though they had been custom-made just for me! I want to thank you for being a part of that!”

The people listened, happy for the amazing glasses. But the director surely must have confused their church with another, they thought, there were no glasses on their list of items to be sent overseas.

But sitting quietly in the back, with tears streaming down his face, an ordinary carpenter realized the Master Carpenter had used him in an extraordinary way.

    Dear Mom and Dad,

I’m afraid I have some very bad news for you. I have been very naughty and the school principal(校长)is very angry with me. She is going to write to you. You must come and take me away from here. She does not want me in the school any longer.

The trouble started last night when I was smoking a cigarette in bed. This is against the rules, of course. We are not supposed to smoke at all.

As I was smoking, I heard footsteps coming towards the room. I did not want a teacher to catch me smoking, so I threw the cigarette away. The principal phoned for the fire department. The school is a long way from the town and by the time the fire department arrived, the whole school was in flames. Many of the girls are in the hospital.

The principal says that the fire was all my fault and you must pay for the damage. She will send you a bill for about a million dollars.

  • 29、Email has brought the art of letter writing back to life, but some experts think the resulting spread of bad English does more harm than good.

Email is a form of communication that is changing, for the worse, the way we write and use language, say some communication researchers. It is also changing the way we interact(交流) and build relationship. These are a few of the recently recognized features of email, say experts, which should cause individuals and organizations to rethink the way they use email.

“Email has increased the spread of careless writing habits,” says Naomi Baron, a professor of linguistics(语言学) at an American university. She says the poor spelling, grammar, punctuation and sentence structure of emails reflect(反映) a growing unconcern about the way we write.

Baron argues that we shouldn’t forgive and forget the poor writing often shown in email. “The more we use email and its tasteless writing, the more it becomes the normal way of writing,” the professor says.

Others say that despite its poor writing, email has finished what several generations of English teachers couldn’t: it has made writing fashionable again.

“Email is a critical new communication technology.” says Ian Lancashire, a professor of English at Toronto University. “It fills the gap between spoken language and the formal methods of writing that existed before email. It is the purest form of written speech.”

Lancashire says email has the mysterious ability to get people who are usually scared by writing to get their thoughts flowing easily onto a blank screen. He says this is because of email’s close similarity to speech. “It’s like a circle of four or five people around a campfire,” he says.

Still, he accepts that this new-found freedom to express themselves often gets people into trouble. Emails sent in a day almost exceed(超过) the number of letters mailed in a year. But more people are recognizing the content of a typical email message is not often exact.

【1】From what Baron says in the third paragraph we can see that ________.

    A. careless people use email more than careful people

    B. email requires people to change their native language

    C. professors in universities don’t need to use email

    D. people communicate by email full of mistakes

2What does the underlined word “it”(in Paragraph 4) refer to?

    A. The poor writing. B. Email.

    C. The good writing. D. A new communication technology.

3In Lancashire’s opinion, email is a wonderful technology because _______.

    A. it can be useful all over the world

    B. it is the fastest way to communicate

    C. we can express ourselves in a free way

    D. we can save a lot of paper

4This passage mainly shows us that ______.

    A. people should stop using email to communicate

    B. experts hold different opinions about email writing

    C. Americans only use email to communicate

    D. email makes people lose interest in English

  • 32、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

In low spirits I watched the workers packing things into our space vehicle(交通工具). It was too bad that we had to move to Mars. I was hoping to get a puppy(小狗)this summer, not a one-way ticket to a planet of red rocks.

“I know you’re disappointed, Cassie,” Mom said. “But I’ve been offered my dream job. And the rocket is first-class. We can travel to Mars in eight days instead of eight months. We’ll come back-finally.”

As Mom went to answer a worker’s question, I sat and pulled grass from the ground. There was no grass on Mars, I thought. Or flowers. Or animals. There’s almost nothing alive on that red wasteland! If only Mom wasn’t an aeronautical(航空)engineer and Dad wasn’t a climatologist(气象学家). If they were zoologists, we could stay on Earth and hang out with animals!

Mom called, saying the vehicle was ready for launch. I walked slowly behind my parents. If only I had a puppy, then maybe moving to Mars wouldn’t feel so awful.

The flight was fast! Soon we reached the red planet. Several of my parents’ scientist friends welcomed us to space. We took a quick tour of the laboratories and everyone talked about things I didn’t understand. Then, we paused at a door. Everyone stopped speaking and looked at me. Mom touched a button on the wall.
