26、“Long time no see.” is a very interesting sentence. When I first read this sentence from an American friend’s e-mail, I laughed. I thought it was a perfect example of Chinglish.
Obviously, it is a word-by-word translation of the Chinese greeting with wrong English grammar and structure! Later on, my friend told me that it is a standard American greeting. I was too surprised to believe her. Her words were unbelievable at all. So I did research on Google.com. To my surprise, there are over 60 thousand web pages containing “Long time no see.”. Though it is sort of informal, it is part of the language that Americans use daily. Interestingly, if you type this phrase in Microsoft Word, the software will tell you that the grammar needs to be corrected.
Nobody knows the origin of this Chinglish sentence. Some people believe that it came from Charlie Chan’s movies. In the 1930s, Hollywood movie-makers successfully created a worldwide famous Chinese detective(侦探) named “Charlie Chan” on wide screens. Detective Chan liked to teach Americans some Chinese wisdom by quoting Confucius. “Long time no see.” was his symbol. Soon after Charlie Chan, “Long time no see.” became a popular expression in America thanks to the popularity of these movies.
Some experts compare America to a huge melting pot. All kinds of cultures are mixed in the pot together, and they change the colour and taste of each other. Language is usually the first thing to be influenced in the mixed pot.
You can have some examples from other countries, such as pizza from Italian, sushi from Japanese, and déjà vu from French etc. There is a long list! Since Americans think highly of Chinese culture more and more nowadays, I believe more Chinese words will become American English in the future. In this way, the American’s melting pot keeps adding richness and flavour.

27、 The staff of the Kennedy School Newsletter has been working hard on another survey. This time we asked students what kinds of toppings they liked on their pizza. We did our survey during lunchtime, so students wouldn’t get too hungry answering our question. And this time we were able to ask more than 450 students to take our survey. That’s almost all the students at our school!
For our survey, we let students pick their three favorite toppings. Some students only choose one or two toppings. That was OK, too.
Here's what we discovered from our survey. The two most popular things to put on pizza are pepperoni(意大利辣肠) and extra cheese. That isn't so surprising. When we order pizza here in the Newsletter office, those are the kinds of pizza we always get!
An unexpected result of this survey is that lots of people like fruit on their pizza. 288 students said they liked to put pineapple on their pizza. If you haven't tried pineapple on your pizza, you should. Lots of people think it's delicious!
We hope you enjoyed taking this survey. We enjoyed your answers. And next time you invite your friends over for pizza, be sure to order an extra large pizza with pepperoni and extra cheese.
That’s the one people like the most.

28、Rolling electric power blackouts afflicted(困扰) roughly 2 million California residents in August, 2020 as a heat wave gripped(影响) the Golden State. At the center of the problem is a state policy requiring that33 percent of California’s electricity come from renewable sources such as solar and wind power, rising to a goal of 60 percent by 2030. Yet data showed that power demand peaks just before the sun begins to go down, when overheated people turn up their air conditioning in the late afternoon. Meanwhile, the power output from California’s wind farms in August was erratic.
California electricity grid operators warned that power shortages might become increasingly common when heat waves hit in the coming years. California still has some natural gas power plants that can be ramped up to(提高) supply energy when renewable supplies fail. “But some folks in the environmental community want to shut down all the gas plants,” Jan Smutny-Jones, CEO of the Independent Energy Producers Association, a trade association representing solar, wind, geothermal, and gas power plants, said in August, 2020. “That would be a disaster. 60 percent of the power in the California Independent System Operator electricity network was being produced by those gas plants in this summer. They are your insurance policy to get through heat waves.”
Union of Concerned Scientists analyst Mark Specht, by contrast, said that “The solution is definitely not more natural gas plants. Really, if anything, this is an indication that California should speed up its investments in clean energy and energy storage.”
【1】What can we learn from Paragraph 1?

B.Disapproving.
C.Objective.
D.Doubtful.
【4】What might Mark Specht agree according to the passage?
A.More natural gas plants ought to be built in the future.
B.Money should be invested in clean energy early.
C.More energy should be produced in the summer.
D.California government should carry out insurance policy.
29、Chinese has overtaken French , Spanish and German to become one of the most promising foreign languages for job seekers in the UK. Research shows graduates in Chinese earn an average yearly salary of 31 ,000 pounds or more.
Chinese students set themselves up for a different university experience from others who take traditional subjects. While an English student may have as little as six hours of a week , those studying Chinese are in class for most of the day. "I had a lot of friends on other courses who didn't do much in first or second year. You can't play at Chinese. You have to spend hours and hours writing characters , " says Hannah , who graduated in Chinese Studies from Sheffield University. "The first year was really difficult. Most of my friends admitted at one point to crying because of the pressure. I was almost told at one point that I might want to reconsider and drop out. "
So are the evenings in learning characters while your friends are at the student bar really worth its Despite the painful studying experience , most of the graduates think so. They use Chinese in their chosen careers , and would not have been in the jobs they do now without their knowledge of the language.
Liberty now works for the civil service in Beijing. She earned a place on the Department for International Development graduate scheme with a salary of over 30, 000 pounds within two years. "The degree was absolutely worth it. Looking around at people I know who have studied French or Spanish at university , there 's not such a chance to use it in the workplace. "
Hannah has set her apart in the workplace , but she warns ambitious students to think about whether they would really want to live in China in the future." Some people think they are going to learn Chinese and then be a big success , but I think it 's important to be quite realistic about that. "

【3】What's Hannah 's attitude to choosing Chinese as a possible careers .
A.Doubtful.
B.Positive.
C.Puzzled.
D.Objective.
【4】What is the main idea of the texts .
A.Many foreign college students come to China to seek jobs.
B.A degree in Chinese means big success for its learners.
C.Graduates in Chinese are more likely to get high﹣paying jobs.
D.Chinese degree is harder to earn but worthwhile in workplace.
