二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、About ten men in every hundred suffer from color blindness in some way. Women are luckier; only about one in two hundred is affected (影响) in this matter. Perhaps, after all, it is safer to be driven by a woman!

There are different forms of color blindness. In some cases a man may not be able to see deep red. He may think that red, orange and yellow are all shadows of green. Sometimes a person cannot tell the difference between blue and green. In rare cases an unlucky man may see everything in shades of green a strange world indeed.

Color blindness in human beings is a strange thing to explain. In a single eye there are millions of very small things called “cones”. These help us to see in a bright light and to tell difference between colors. There are also millions of “rods”, but these are used for seeing when it is near dark. They show us shape but no color.

Some insects have favorite colors. Mosquitoes prefer blue to yellow. A red light will not attract insects, but a blue lamp will. In a similar way human beings also have favorite colors. Yet we are lucky. With the aid of the cones in our eyes we can see many beautiful colors by day, and with the aid of the rods we can see shapes at night. One day we may even learn more about the invisible colors around us.

【1】The passage is mainly about _____________.

    A. color and its surprising effects.

    B. women being luckier than men

    A. tell different shapes

【3Why do some people say it is safer to be driven by women?

    A. Women are more careful.

    B. There are fewer color-blind women

    C. Women are fonder of driving than men.

    D. Women are weaker but quicker in thinking.

【4Which of the statements about the color- blind is true?

    A. Not all of them have the same problem in recognizing color.

    B. None of them can see deep red.

    C. None of them can tell the difference between blue and green.

  • 28、Great work is work that makes a difference in people’s lives, writes David Sturt, Executive Vice President of the O.C. Tanner Institute, in his book Great Work: How to Make a Difference People Love. Sturt insists, however, that great work is not just for surgeons or special-needs educators or the founders of organizations trying to eliminate poverty in sub-Saharan Africa. The central theme of Great Work, according to Sturt, is that anyone can make a difference in any job. It’s not the nature of the job, but what you do with the job that counts. As proof, Sturt tells the story of a remarkable hospital cleaner named Moses.

In a building filled with doctors and nurses doing great life-saving work, Moses the cleaner makes a difference. Whenever he enters a room, especially a room with a sick child, he engages both patients and parents with his optimism and calm, introducing himself to the child and, Sturt writes, speaking “little comments about light and sunshine and making things clean.” He comments on any progress he sees day by day (“you’re sitting up today, that’s good.”) Moses is no doctor and doesn’t pretend to be, but he has witnessed hundreds of sick children recovering from painful surgery, and parents take comfort from his encouraging words. For Matt and Mindi, whose son McKay was born with only half of a heart, Moses became a close friend. As Sturt explains, “Moses took his innate (与生俱来的) talents (his sensitivity) and his practical wisdom (from years of hospital experience) and combined them into a powerful form of patient and family support that changed the critical-care experience for Mindi, Matt and little McKay.”

How do people like Moses do great work when so many people just work? That was the central question raised by Sturt and his team at the O.C. Tanner Institute, a consulting company specialized in employee recognition and rewards system.

O.C. Tanner launched an exhaustive Great Work study that included surveys to 200 senior executives, a further set of surveys to 1,000 managers and employees working on projects, an in-depth qualitative study of 1.7 million accounts of award-winning work (in the form of nominations (提名) for awards from corporations around the world), and one-on-one interviews with 200 difference makers. The results of the study revealed that those who do great work refuse to be defeated by the constraints of their jobs and are especially able to reframe their jobs: they don’t view their jobs as a list of tasks and responsibilities but see their jobs as opportunities to make a difference. No matter, as Moses so ably exemplifies (例证), what that job may be.

【1】According to Sturt, which of the following is TRUE?

A.It’s not the nature of the job, but what you do that makes a difference.

B.Anyone in the world is responsible to delete poverty and change the world.

C.Anyone can make a difference in people’s lives no matter what kind of job he does.

D.Surgeons, special-needs educators and founders of organizations can succeed more easily.

【2】According to this passage, how does Moses, a common hospital cleaner, make a difference in people’s lives?

A.By keeping optimistic and calm when facing patients and their parents at hospital.

B.By showing his special gift and working experience when working at hospital.

C.By showing his sympathy and kindness to patients when entering their rooms.

D.By pretending to be a doctor or nurse when entering a room with a sick child.

【3】The word “constraints” in the last paragraph probably refers to ______.

    A.demands

    B.advantages

    C.disadvantages

    D.limitations

【4】What can we infer from the passage?

A.Great work is work that makes a difference in people’s lives no matter what you do.

B.If a boss has trouble recognizing his employees, he can ask O. C. Tanner for advice.

C.Moses makes a difference through his sensitivity and his practical wisdom.

D.Those who do great work are never defeated by others or their jobs themselves.

    A Brief History of Ice

Ice is a lot more than frozen water. In ancient days, it was nearly worth its weight in gold. Egyptian pharaohs, Roman emperors, and Mideastern kings ordered thick pieces of ice brought from the snow-covered mountain peak to make their drinks 1. Floated on ships, ice soon became a quick business -- not only as refreshment but also to cool houses in an old version of air 2. The Chinese of 3,000 years ago built special buildings to 3 ice. The Persians enjoyed put ice into fruit juices, which was called sharbia. In time, a craze for sharbia 4 throughout Europe.

The best was yet to come. In Italy, around 1550, some 5 cooks added milk to the recipe(菜谱). Presto! The 6 of ice cream! But, for centuries, it was 7 and expensive. In 1809, Dolly Madison, wife of the fourth president of U. S. A., impressed her dinner guests by being the first to 8 ice cream at the White House.

Apart from nice desserts, ice was 9 business. It could cool fish, meat, fruits, and vegetables sent all over the world. Since then, we needn’t climb up mountains for ice all year round.

A small ice cube has a big history. Imagine yourself a queen or king of Persia when you put an ice into your lemonade. It’ll 10 even better.

Colleges are attaching too much importance to tests. Students who receive higher scores on the SAT and the ACT are considered to be more intelligent and as a result they are usually admitted to better schools.

However, these tests don’t necessarily ensure one’s future success in life. To become better test-takers than others, some students would like to make more preparations. Several SAT and ACT classes are offered by various companies and individual tutors, giving rich students a better chance to improve their scores. Some students even take medicine before tests. Although it is not proved that taking these drugs will increase a student’s score, the nature of the drug is to increase alertness, concentration, and mental processing speed.

In addition, these tests can’t show the skills and characters that are a key part to success. According to Bob Schaeffer of the National Center for Fair and Open Testing, creativity, perseverance and self-discipline(自律) are a few basic qualities that are useful in the world that aren’t measured by these tests. A high test score tells you nothing about how a student will handle the future life or how well they will adapt to their surroundings.

What colleges can do is to weigh the students’ academic track, such as what classes they took and how difficult they were, or what extra curricular activities the students were involved in. These things don’t necessarily predict what the students will do in college, but if the admissions would pay more attention to four years of hard work, they might get a more successful and well-rounded group of graduates.
