  • 27、   Maybe you are familiar with scenes in movies where a pilot has encountered(遇) an issue mid-flight and you hear him shout “Mayday, mayday, mayday”.

But what does “mayday” mean? “Mayday” is an internationally recognized distress call(求救信号),mostly used by pilots and boat captains. The signal can be sent out by any channel by radio communication.

This emergency call originated in the 1920s. At that time, the standard distress call was “SOS” and was typically used by navy captains. The message was sent in Morse code by telegraph. In Morse codes,“SOS”is three dots(点),three dashes(线)and three dots. The signal was unmistakable. However, aircraft pilots use radio calls, so sending out “SOS”could be misheard as other letters, such as “F”.

Frederick Stanley Mockford, a radio officer at Croydon Airport in London, was asked to think of a word that would indicate distress. Because of the amount of the flights that flew between Croydon and Paris, he chose mayday, as it sounds similar to the French word “m’aider”, which means “help me”.

Facing a threatening situation, pilots are required to repeat the signal three times in case of radio interference(干扰)or loud background noise. If the pilots don’t get a reply within two minutes, they should repeat it. Once they receive a reply, more information, including the code of the flight, their current situation and the number of people on board should be reported. Sometimes pilots are directed to a nearby airport or location where they can make an emergency landing. While mayday signals indicate a life-threatening situation, they do not always end in fatalities(死亡).

Despite dangers, air travel is still the safest means of transport.

【1】What does the article tell us about“mayday”?

A.It is a signal mainly used in European countries.

B.It is only used by pilots and boat captains.

C.It was invented by a radio reporter in the 1920s.

D.It was sent by telegraph in the beginning.

【2】How is “SOS” written in Morse code?

    A.---…---

    B.------…

    C.…….---

    D.…---…

【3】“Mayday”was chosen as a distress call because___.

B.it sounds similar to “m’aider”,the French word for “help me”

C.its pronunciation is similar to“distress”in French

  • 28、Hundreds of children are being treated for sleep problems in Wales every year, in some cases, babies, infants and teenagers have been admitted to hospital while in north Wales alone.

The Children’s Sleep Charity said many children were suffering from lack of sleep mainly because of technology use. Public Health Wales said sleep was as important to a child’s health as healthy eating and exercise, and children with poor sleep patterns were more likely to be fat.

Statistics obtained under the Freedom of Information Act by BBC Wales found at least 408 children have been admitted to hospitals across Wales suffering from sleep disorders since March 2013.

Children aged between 0 and 4 made up the highest number of inpatients, with some newborns being treated for sleep-related problems from the day of birth.

Vicki Dawson, who set up the Children’s Sleep Charity (CSC), said sleepless nights were putting both children and parents in anxiety. “Their weight and growth may also be affected as well as their mental health,” she said.

Teachers said children showing signs of sleep shortage and tiredness in class were a concern as they couldn’t concentrate for long periods.

Psychologist Amy McClelland, of Sleep Wales, said a common problem was children being “over excited” and “not having the chance to relax properly” before bed and families should get back to basics. “Think 1950s family home. Dinner as a family, read, chat, a film maybe, lights off and then bed.” She added.

  • 29、Good health is the most valuable thing a person can have, but one cannot take good health for granted. It is important to remember that the body needs proper care in order to be healthy. There are three things that a person can do to help stay in good shape: eat right food, get enough sleep, and exercise regularly.

Proper nutrition (营养) is important for good health. Your body cannot work well unless it receives the proper kind of “fuel”(燃料). Don’t eat too much food with lots of sugar and fat. Eat plenty of foods high in protein (蛋白质), like meat, fish, eggs and nuts. Vegetables and fruits are very important because they provide necessary vitamins (维他命) and minerals. However, don’t overeat. It is not helpful to be overweight.

Getting the proper amount of sleep is also important. If you don’t get enough sleep, you feel tired and easily get angry. You have no energy. Over a long period of time a little amount of sleep may even result in a change of personality (人的个性). Be sure to allow yourself from seven to nine hours of sleep each night. If you do, your body will feel strong and refreshed, and your mind will be sharp.

Finally, get plenty of exercise. Exercise firms the body, strengthens the muscles, and prevents you from gaining weight. It also improves your heart and lungs. If you follow a regular exercise program, you will probably increase your life-span (寿命). Any kind of exercise is good. Most sports are excellent for keeping the body in good shape: basketball, swimming, bicycling, running and so on are good examples. Sports are not only good for your body, but they are enjoyable and interesting, too.

If everybody were to eat the right foods, get plenty of sleep and exercise regularly, the world would be a happier and healthier place. We would all live to be much older and wiser.

    1According to the passage, _________.

    A. we should always keep fit

    B. if we were healthy, we could spend our days in doing things with less sleep

    C. one can eat a lot to stay in good shape

    D. one needn’t take any exercise if he is healthy

    A. we should eat a lot of sweets

    B. one needs a large amount of fat

    C. people should eat according to the foods nutrition

    D. we must try to sleep now and then

3Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?

    A. Eating too much sugar and fat is not good for our health.

    B. We have no energy if we don’t have enough sleep.

    C. If we sleep five hours each night, we will feel strong.

    D. Exercise is good for our body.
