二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、I’m an immigrant from China, and I found that in Quebec I had to learn French, which was a totally strange language to me. After waiting for half a month, I received a letter from my school, St-luc, and began learning French in a welcome class, which is a class for new immigrants. Even though French was rather hard for me to speak and to understand, I began my secondary five studies the next year.

The first few days were terrible, especially the first class of the first day. Although I had been in St-Luc for one year, I still didn’t know much about the school. The first problem that I had was finding my classroom. Luckily, I met a girl who was in my French class and my chemistry class.

After the bell rang, the teacher, Mme. Zarif, began her class. First, she introduced herself to everyone and then gave us the course outline for the first year. During her class, everyone laughed many times. Although I could only understand a little bit, I could tell that she was very funny.

At the end of her speech, to make sure that we did not forget what we had learned in secondary four, Mme. Zarif gave us a paper with many symbols of elements on it and asked us to write their names in French. I was shocked when I received the paper. Honestly, the only symbol I knew was O. After having started at the paper for a few minutes, I gave up and raised my hand. The teacher came, and I told her that I didn’t know anything.

“You have forgotten everything already?” she said in a surprised tone. “No,” I answered, “I have never learned them in French before. I am from the welcome class.” “Oh,” the teacher said with a look of understanding. “Come here after school. I will teach them to you.”

I agreed. Finally, I handed in the paper with only one answer on it. On the whole, my first day of secondary five was a little embarrassing but, at the same time, interesting.

【1】What is the author’s first problem on his first day of secondary five?

    A.Finding his classroom.

    B.Introducing himself.

    C.Understanding French.

    D.Taking an exam.

【2】What does the author think of Mme. Zarif?

    A.Quiet.

    B.Energetic.

    C.Brave.

    D.Humorous.

【3】Why did the author fail to finish writing chemical elements?

    A.He forgot to revise chemistry.

B.He couldn’t write French at all.

C.He didn’t concentrate on the lesson.

D.He didn’t learn them in French.

【4】What is the best title of the text?

    A.A Welcome Class.

    B.My French teacher.

    C.My first Chemistry Class.

    D.An immigrant from China.

  • 27、The idea behind Facebook is to make us feel connected all the time. But in my research, I’ve found that the truth is quite different.

Technology, it turns out, has made being alone seem like a problem that needs solving. When young people are alone, even for a minute or two, they feel the need to connect, to get on Facebook or some other social networks and chat. But in connecting, they often end up feeling more isolated. Why? Because by being in constant (不断的) connection, they lose the ability to feel satisfied with their own company (独处).

Sherry Turkle, a professor, says that Facebook can help us keep in touch with our friends, but we too often use it instead of spending face-to-face time with them. And since we feel the need to keep up with them online, we don’t have moments of loneliness where we can collect our thoughts and learn how to be comfortable being alone.

Jane, a former student of mine, who is back in New York after living abroad for ten years, told me that Facebook helps her a lot. The first time she moved back to New York from abroad, she felt disconnected from her family and friends. Now, because of lots of photos and information updates (更新), she knows what is happening with her friends all the time.

“In fact, if you are lonely in real life, you will be lonely online as well.”

—by Sree Sreenivasan, Chief Digital Officer

    A.feel satisfied with our life

    B.avoid using social networks

C.keep in touch with our friends

    【3】What’s Jane’s attitude towards Facebook?

    A.Hopeful.

    B.Doubtful.

    C.Thankful.

    D.Regretful.

【4】The purpose of the text is to________.

    A.educate

    B.discuss

    C.persuade

    D.introduce

  • 28、   Humans don't know why the environment shapes the gender of some lizards, crocodiles and all kinds of sea turtles.

Sea turtle eggs that hatch below 81.86 degrees Fahrenheit produce males, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, while nests in the mid-80s create a gender mix. Anything higher than 87.8 degrees, though, is 100 percent girls.

A 2018 study on green turtles near Australia's Great Barrier Reef found 116 female hatchlings for every male. The study found that 99 percent of hatchlings from the warmer northern beaches were female while the share in the cooler south was much lower (69 percent).

NOAA researchers determined the gender gap in Australia started widening after the early 1990s,when the temperature started climbing. Female turtles that hatched before that period were more than males by a smaller rate-6 to 1.

A 2015 report from San Diego also showed a change after years of hotter nesting seasons: Sea turtles tested on the southern California shores had gone from 65 percent to 78 percent female.

And researchers at Florida Atlantic University guess that hatchlings on Boca Raton's beaches these days are at least 90 percent female.

Scientists have been testing methods to cool the nests. Gently digging up eggs and moving them to shadier parts of the beach has proved to work. So do sprinkler(洒水) systems and dividing eggs into smaller hatches.

Once replanted, the hatchlings burst from the ground some 50 days later in 1-by-1-foot area, moving in circles until someone puts them into a wooden box and carries them to the shore, where they climb into the waves.

【1】What does the word “hatch" in paragraph 2 probably refer to?

    A.Come out.

    B.Find out.

    C.Look out.

    D.Tum out.

【2】To produce a balanced gender rate, we'd better put turtle eggs at________.

    A.78 degrees Fahrenheit

    B.85 degrees Fahrenheit

    C.80 degrees Fahrenheit

    D.99 degrees Fahrenheit

【3】Which of the following statements is TRUE?

A.Girl turtles prefer to live in warmer climates.

B.The gender gap started widening with the temperature going down.

C.Only when people carry eggs to the shore can they hatch.

D.Dividing eggs into smaller hatches can cool the nests.

  • 29、For teenagers, it's great fun to explore new places and it feels like an adventure, even when you know you're not the first to have been there. But to make sure not to get lost or waste time going round in circles, the following tips may be helpful.

Do the map reading if you're being driven somewhere. It'll be easier if you keep the map following the direction you are traveling in. Keep looking ahead so that you can give the driver lots of warning before having to make a turn, or you'll have to move to the back seat.

Get a group of friends together and go exploring. You'll need a good map, a compass , a raincoat, a cell phone to call for help in case you get lost, and a bit of spare cash for emergencies .Tell someone where you're going before you set out and let them know what time you expect to be back. The purpose of the activity is in not getting lost, not in seeing how fast you can go, so always stick together, waiting for slower friends to catch up.

See if your school or a club organizes orienteering(越野识途比赛)activities, in which you need a map and a compass to find your way. This can be done as a sport, with teams trying to find the way from A to B(and B to C, etc. ) in the fastest time, or simply as a spare-time activity. It enables you to be familiar with the use of maps and compass and gain some special skills. In some way, it’s not only good fun, but also a great way to keep fit.

1When you sit beside the driver, you’d better________.

    A. look ahead to see where there is a gas station

    B. move to the back seat if feeling uncomfortable

    C. keep looking at the map to find another place to go to

    D. direct the driver when necessary

2In the exploration, why do you need wait for the slower friends?

    A. To share the fun with him/her in exploration

    B. To tell him/her what’s going on with group members.

    C. To avoid yourself or your friends getting lost

    D. To show them how fast you can go

3What does the whole passage talk about?

    A. the fun of exploration

    B. how to prevent people getting lost in exploration

    C. what to bring for exploration

    D. the way to use a map in exploration
