二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、Food sometimes gets poisoned with harmful things. A person who eats such food can get an illness called food poisoning. Food poisoning is usually not serious, but some types are deadly. The symptoms of food poisoning usually begin within hours of eating the poisoned food. Fever is one of the most common symptoms.

Certain microorganisms(微生物)cause most types of food poisoning. Bacteria and other microorganisms can poison eggs, meat, vegetables, and many other foods. After entering the body, these tiny living things release(释放)poisons that make people sick.

Some chemicals can also cause food poisoning. They are often added to food while it is being grown, processed, or prepared. For example, many farmers spray chemicals on crops to kill weeds and insects. Some people may have a bad reaction to those chemicals when they eat the crops.

Some plants and animals contain natural poisons that are harmful to people. These include certain kinds of seafood, grains, nuts, seeds, beans, and mushrooms.

When people handle food properly, the risk of food poisoning is very small. Microorganisms multiply rapidly in dirty places and in warm temperatures. This means that people should never touch food with dirty hands or put food on unwashed surfaces. Food should be kept in a refrigerator to stop microorganisms from growing. Meat needs to be cooked thoroughly to kill any dangerous microorganisms. People should also wash food covered with chemicals before eating it. Finally, people should not eat wild mushrooms or other foods that grow in the wild. Some of these foods may contain natural materials that are poisonous to humans. In addition, some types of fish can be poisonous.

Most people recover from food poisoning after a few days of resting and drinking extra water. If people eat natural poisons, they must go to the hospital right away to have their stomachs emptied.

【1】Which of the following statements is NOT true?

    A. Food when poisoned can make people sick.

    B. Food poisoning means death.

    C. Food poisoning comes in varieties.

    D. Food poisoning can be serious.

2We know from the passage that the symptoms of food poisoning .

    A. are always accompanied by a fever

    B. are too common to be noted

    C. can be noticed within hours

    D. can be ignored

3Food poisoning can be caused by all the following EXCEPT   .

    A. some chemicals

    B. low temperatures

    C. some tiny living things

    D. certain natural materials

4From Paragraph 5, we can learn that .

    A. mushrooms should not be eaten

    B. vegetables are safer than meat and seafood

    C. natural poisons are more dangerous than chemicals

    D. different types of food should be handled differently

5It can be inferred from the passage that   .

    A. natural materials are safe in food processing

B.chemicals are needed in food processing

C.food poisoning can be kept under control

    D. food poisoning is out of control

  • 27、When Cherry Watson travelled on a recent flight from New York to Washington and noticed an “awful tension” in the cabin, she first thought it was caused by typical bad-tempered passengers. But as the flight neared its end, it became obvious that something was very wrong.

A teenage boy with Down Syndrome (唐氏综合症) who was traveling with his family had become upset and would not return to his seat, regardless of the cabin crew’s warnings over the loudspeaker that it was almost time to land. The pilot was forced to circle above the airport, delaying the landing and angering people on the already tense flight.

“If it was a cartoon,” remembered Watson, “there would have been smoke coming out of people’s ears.”

The boy’s elderly parents and adult brothers and sisters tried to persuade him to get off the floor and back into his seat, but in vain.Watson, who used to be a teacher, stood up and quickly headed to the back of the plane.

She found the boy in the passage between rows of seats, lying on his belly, and lay down on her stomach to face him. She began chatting calmly with him, asking his name, his favorite book, and his favorite characters. He told her he felt sick and she tried to comfort him.

Minutes later, he allowed her to hold his hand, and then together they got properly back into airplane seats. Watson asked for sick bags, and held them as the boy threw up several times, including on her. As she helped him clean up, she repeatedly told him everything would be okay and that they’d get through it together.

After the plane was finally able to land, no one was impatient to step off the flight as one might expect. Instead, calmed passengers—obviously following Watson’s amazing example—allowed the boy and his family to depart first, smiling at them as they passed. His parents tearfully thanked Watson for what she had done, and a doctor sitting nearby also let her know he had even taken notes on her expert way of handling the situation.

1The landing was delayed because _____.

    A. the plane was out of control

    B. the pilot was forced to change the destination

    C. a family ignored the warnings

    D. a boy refused to sit in his seat

2Watson successfully handled the “awful tension” by _____.

    A. fighting against unfair treatment

    B. calling on other passengers to join her

    C. asking an experienced doctor to help

    D. communicating with the boy

3What changed the angry passengers’ attitude at last?

    A. Watson’s efforts.   B. The plane’s safe landing.

    C. The crew’s behavior.   D. The boy’s improvement.

4Which of the following words can best describe Watson?

    A. Patient and ambitious.   B. Kind and cool-headed.

    C. Wise and cooperative.   D. Generous and cautious.

  • 28、Diwali(Deepavali)is a festival of lights observed in October or November each year in Canada. During the festival, various community groups, businesses, schools and associations celebrate it in different ways. Some companies have Diwali dinners and some communities organize gatherings that feature firework displays, dances, street lighting, and plays.

Many women wear fine jewelry and silk outfits to celebrate Diwali. Some women and girls use Mehendi, a dye decoration which can last a limited time, on their palms, and then they will finally get colorful hand paintings. Many homes that celebrate Diwali have various types of sweets, salty and spiced food as well as Diwali herbs (香料). Various lights, candles and sparklers are lit inside and outside homes, particularly in courtyards, on Diwali. Diwali is not a nationwide public holiday in Canada but it is a prevalent festival celebrated in many towns and cities. There may be traffic jams and parking places may be full in areas where events are held to celebrate Diwali. Some Indian businesses may close early on Diwali.

Diwali is called the "Festival of Lights" and is celebrated to honor Rama, a hero who once fought and won a battle against the demons(恶魔).
