26、 Researchers in the African country of Niger have introduced a new vaccine that protects against the diarrheal disease called rotavirus(轮状病毒). A scientific test has shown that the new vaccine is effective, safe and easy to use. Experts believe it will be more widely used than the two rotavirus vaccines now given to children.
The new vaccine is important because rotavirus is a serious illness that can lead to death. It kills more than 215,000 children each year—about 600 a day. Two vaccines against rotavirus are already available. However, they are costly and difficult to use.
They must also be kept cold. In many African countries where people suffer from rotavirus, refrigeration and electricity are unreliable. As a result, the existing rotavirus vaccines are not widely used.
Researchers have been working on a new vaccine for rotavirus called BRV-PV. They have recently tested the vaccine with young children in Niger. Researchers gave 1,780 babies the BRV-PV vaccine. Only 31 cases of rotavirus developed in those babies. The researchers say the clinical trial shows that BRV-PV was nearly 67 percent effective.
Dr. Emmanuel Baron is the director of Epicentre, a research group that is part of Doctors Without Borders, an aid group. Epicentre researchers conducted the clinical trial. “We saw actually three things. The first is that this vaccine is efficient. The second is that this vaccine is safe. And we also saw a good acceptability by both the care providers and the families.”
The new vaccine does not need refrigeration for up to six months. Medical workers mix it with liquid and give it to babies three times: when they are 6 weeks old, 10 weeks old, and 14 weeks old.
The vaccine is expected to cost $ 6. The price will likely drop as more people are given the vaccine.
Baron says medical workers in countries where rotavirus is a serious health threat are waiting for the World Health Organization to give the green light to the vaccine. Then, medical workers can start giving the new vaccine to children.

27、“Ross, look at this!” I pointed to the computer screen. For the sweet puppy faces from dozens of photos, they were the cutest things I’d ever seen. Gabby, our beloved dog, had passed away, and the house didn’t feel right without a dog. Ross agreed. Where we disagreed was the type of dog.
Ross wanted a small low-maintenance (低维护) one. He and I both had full-time jobs and Ross wasn’t in the greatest health. A few years back, he’d suffered a serious heart attack. I recently met our neighbor’s new goldendoodle (贵宾犬). It was the type Ross wanted.
A few months later, we took home our precious goldendoodle puppy. We named her Sunny. Sunny needed to be walked several times a day, but I didn’t have the time for that. Ross’s work hours were more flexible, so he agreed to walk her for 30 minutes a day. It was a big change for him, though he was unwilling. He’d never kicked his bad habit of staying at his desk until the end of the workday.
About a year after we got Sunny, it was time for Ross’s follow-up physical examination. The doctor studied the screen carefully and smiled. “Why are you smiling?!” Ross asked. The doctor explained that after his artery (动脉) was blocked, small vessels (血管) had grown in his heart, accelerating blood flow. “It’s a rare phenomenon, which is more likely to occur in patients who join in regular, light exercise.” Ross and I looked at each other. Sunny saved Ross’s life! Sunny is now five years old. Fully grown, she weighs about 20 pounds.

29、Bethany Burke was packing for a family vacation when she glanced in the mirror and froze. She saw a small ugly red bump in the middle of her forehead. “That’s the worst,” she remembers thinking. She had no idea, however, how much worse it would get.
Bethany, a 15-year-old high school student tried to forget about the bump as she boarded a flight from her hometown of Austin, Texas, to Portland, Oregon. But during the flight the bump grew and grew.
After the plane landed, more bumps appeared, including one close to her eye. Her parents took her to the nearest emergency room. As it turns out, Bethany had been attacked by a superbug (超级病菌).
Superbugs were once a problem only in hospitals and nursing homes. In the past decade, though, they have been affecting healthy children and adults as well. In a few hours, they can cause life-threatening infections.
“Teens, especially student athletes, can be easily hurt because superbugs stay in warm, damp places where people come into close contact with each other, such as school locker rooms and gyms,” says Dr. Aaron Glatt, an infectious disease specialist. “If you get cut playing sports, and you come into contact with a superbug on a mat, you give it a way to get in,” he explains.
As for Bethany, she says the doctor didn’t seem too concerned. “He just handed me this pill, an antibiotic (抗生素),” Bethany says. “He gave us the impression that it was going to clear up very fast.”
It didn’t take long for Bethany to realize the antibiotics the doctor had given her weren’t working. One of the bumps grew so large that she could no longer open her eye, and her pain increased. Her parents rushed her to another hospital. The new medicines seemed to start working. Her fever dropped, and the bumps stopped growing.
Luckily for Bethany, there were still three powerful antibiotics that together were able to fight off her infection. But what happens when superbugs become resistant even to those drugs? For doctors, that’s the biggest worry.
