26、Are you a social media addict? Are you always checking your smart phone to see how many “likes” you’ve received for your latest post? Maybe you feel comforted by the sound that someone has sent you a message?
Don’t worry, you’re not alone. We check our phones an average of 150 times a day, and around 30% of the total time spent online is devoted to social media. Some experts now fear this habit could be damaging our mental health.
This is something particularly bothering young adults, according to a study from the University of Pittsburgh. It found the more they used social media, the more likely they were to be depressed. In tests, those people who checked social media frequently were 2.7 times more likely to be depressed compared to those who spent most of their time generally surfing the Internet, who had just 1.7 times the risk.
Some of us certainly feel sad when we’re ignored on social media sites, or when we see someone else having a better time than us. But depression is a more serious condition and clinical psychologist, Abigael San, recently told the BBC that, “It’s a real issue, and it’s been getting significantly worse over the last 5-6 years. You can get so hooked that it takes you away from your real relationships.” However, Abigael does admit that social media is more likely to worsen pre-existing issues than directly cause them.
Other research by the University of Glasgow found that teenagers are affected by the 24-hour demands of their social media accounts. It found that those with higher levels of emotional investment in social media, and who use it at night, were more likely to feel depressed and anxious.
Despite these warning signs, why do some of us continue to keep clicking? Well, I suppose we all want to be liked and we don’t want to miss out on a conversation that’s taking place online. But we need to know when to switch off our virtual online world and connect with the real world instead.
【1】Who is more likely to be depressed according to the study?
A.People checking social media frequently.
B.People surfing the Internet regularly.
C.People receiving a few “likes” for their posts.

【2】Why does the author give a quote from Abigael San in Para. 4?
A.To introduce the coming topic.
B.To give a more supporting example.
C.To stress the importance of social media.
D.To explain the cause of a social media addict.
【3】Why do people get addicted to social media according to the author?
A.Because they have more time and money.
B.Because the virtual world is much more attractive.
C.Because they want to attract more attention.
D.Because emotional investment in social media benefits them.
【4】What’s the passage mainly about?
A.It’s common for teenagers to be a social addict.
B.Using smart phones does harm to people’s health.

27、In Woods Chan’s class at a high school in California, students chat with each other in Spanish, Arabic (阿拉伯语) and Mam, a Mayan language from Guatemala. The students have only been in the US for a few weeks or months. Many students were from different countries last year. Woods Chan became concerned when she started hearing the Spanish-speaking students laugh when their classmates spoke Mam or Arabic.
Woods Chan came up with an idea. She asked her students to take turns teaching a little bit of their home language each day. Students taught their partners how to count from 1 to 10, how to introduce themselves and how to say basic phrases or words like “Cool”. Then, they recorded themselves saying those phrases in short videos and wrote vocabulary words on the whiteboard.
Woods Chan saw the difference in her students. She said they grew more confident after seeing their own language on the whiteboard and hearing it in the videos. They started making friends with each other across cultural lines. Other students who were not in that class would come in and see something written in Mam on the whiteboard and say, “Hey, that’s Mam! I speak Mam!”
The project also helped students understand their partners better. Orlando, a 17-year-old student from El Salvador, said he never knew Arabic or Mam, even existed before he came to the US and heard his classmates talk. Now, he thinks it would be good for all students in his school to learn a little of their partners’ home languages. “When I first got here,” he said in Spanish, “I thought, ‘No one talks like me. I’m the only one, and I felt lonely.’ Now, I don’t feel so bad anymore.”
Knowledge of other languages can help Woods Chan’s students beyond the classroom, too. Languages like Mam are becoming more and more common in the US. Some Oakland graduates have gone on to become Mam-English interpreters (口译员) to help fill a lack of interpreters in all kinds of settings.
【1】What made Woods Chan think of the idea?
A.Some of her students making fun of other languages.
B.Her students hardly using their home languages.
C.Her students being interested in learning a new language.
D.Her students having difficulty communicating with each other.
【2】What was the students’ feeling of seeing their home languages written on the whiteboard?
A.Angry but accepting.
B.Excited and proud.
C.Worried but supportive.
D.Relaxed and creative.
【3】What effect did Woods Chan’s project have on Orlando?
A.It made him feel less lonely at school.
B.It encouraged him to get a job as an interpreter.
C.It helped him understand his home language better.
D.It enabled him to work better in foreign language classes.
【4】What can be the best title for the text?

C.She Replies to Her Students’ Needs Quickly
D.Language Is Not a Block to Communication
28、According to a recent study in the Journal of Consumer Research. both the size and consumption (食用) habits of our eating companions (同伴) can influence (影响) our food intake (摄取). And it is different from the present research that says you should avoid eating with heavier people who order large portions (份). 【1】 .
To test the effect of social influence on eating habits, the researchers conducted two experiments. In the first, 95 undergraduate women were individually invited into a lab to take part in a study about move viewership. 【2】 . An actor hired by the researchers grabbed her food first. In her natural state, the actor weighed 105 pounds. But in half the cases she wore a specially designed fat suit which increased her weight to 180 pounds.
Both the fat and thin versions of the actor took a large amount of food. The participants followed suit (照着做), taking more food than they normally would have. 【3】 .
For the second test. in one case the thin actor took two pieces of candy from the snack bowls. In the other case. she took 30 pieces. 【4】 : the participants followed suit but took much more candy when the thin actor took 30 pieces.
The tests show that the social environment is extremely influential when we're making decisions. If this fellow participant is going to eat more, so will I. Call it the “I'll have what she's having” effect. However, we'll adjust (调整) the influence. 【5】 if an overweight person is having a large portion. But if a thin person eats a lot, I'll follow suit. If he can eat much and keep slim. why can't I?

29、Icelanders have a beautiful tradition of giving books to each other on Christmas Eve and then spending the night reading. This custom is so deeply rooted in the culture that it is the reason for Christmas Book Flood, when the majority of books in Iceland are sold between September and December in preparation for Christmas giving.
“Books get attention here.” Says Baldur Bjarnason, a researcher who has written about the Icelandic book industry.
The small Nordic island, with a population of only 329,000 people, is extraordinarily literary (文学的). They love to read and write. According to a BBC article, “The country has more writers, more books published and more books read, per head, than anywhere else in the world… One in 10 Icelanders will publish a book.”
It seems there is more value placed on physical, paper books than in North America, where e-books have grown in popularity. One bookstore manager said, “The book in Iceland is such an enormous gift-you give a physical book. You don’t give e-books here.” The book industry is driven by the majority of people buying several books each year, rather than the North American pattern of a few people buying lots of books.
It sounds like a wonderful tradition, perfect for a winter evening. It is something that I would love to incorporate (吸收) into my own family’s celebration of Christmas.

A. People in Iceland never buy e-books.
B. People in North America never buy physical books.
C. A few people buy a large number of books in North America.
D. In Iceland, everyone buys a large number of books each year.
