二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、Millions of New Yorkers and visitors ride the city’s subway and other trains each day. The public transportation system offers more than just a trip, however. It also has one of the most extensive public art collection in the world, with much of it under city streets.

Some people call it New York’s “underground art museum”. It includes more than 250 works of art. They are meant to brighten everyone’s ride around the city. There is a huge painting of the night sky on the ceiling of Grand Central Terminal. New Yorkers have been looking up at that artwork for 100 years.

Sandra Bloodworth has directed the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s arts program since it began in 1985.“But actually, it really began much earlier. When the subway was founded in 1904, a percentage of money was set aside to create a special ornamentation (装饰) within the system, in order to make the place a very special place that people would want to use.”he says. For the past 30 years, artists have been asked to make works that relate to city life or to the neighborhood around a train station. There are coastal scenes at stations near the Atlantic Ocean.

Rider Tonya Pierre praises the underground art.“When I’m stressed, I look at the subway art. I love the colors.Where I live, they have a mosaic (镶嵌画) of a man and a woman, like floating across the water, and it’s beautiful. It’s just beautiful to have art everywhere.”Nearby is Alejandra Acosta,a visitor from Colombia.“I think it’s nice when you see these kinds of things that catch your eye when you’re walking in spaces like the subway stations that seem a little bit dull. They don’t have a lot of decoration.”

  • 27、 When my daughter realized that she had really hurt another child with a mean word, she cried and immediately wanted to apologize. That was a good thing, but I wanted her to know an apology can't always make things better. So I told her the story of Will, a 9-year-old boy whose father left his mom two years earlier.

Will was angry, and he often hurt others with hurtful words. He once told his mom, "I see why Dad left you!" Unable to deal with Will, the mother sent him to spend the summer with his grandparents. His grandmother's strategy to help Will learn self-control was to make him go into the garage and pound a two-inch-long nail (钉子) into a four-by-four board every time he said a mean thing. For a small boy, this was a hard task, but he couldn't return until the nail was all the way in.

After about ten trips to the garage, Will began to be more cautious about his words. In the end, he even apologized for all the bad things he'd said. One day his grandmother made him bring in the board filled with nails and told him to pull them all out. This was even harder than pounding them in, but after a huge struggle, he did it. His grandmother hugged him and said, "I appreciate your apology and, of course, I forgive you because I love you, but I want you to know that an apology is like pulling out one of those nails. Look at the board. The holes are still there. The board will never be the same. I know your dad put a hole in you, but please don't put holes in other people; you're better than that."

The truth is that no matter how much we apologize to people, we can't take back what we said. The best thing for us to do is to try not to hurt people in the first place.

【1】What did the writer's daughter do when she realized she had hurt another child?

    A. She cried and pretended to be hurt.

    C. She wanted her mother to tell her a story.

    D. She wanted her mother to apologize to that child.

【2】Why did Will's mother send him to his grandparents'?

    A. Because Will could hurt nobody there.

    B. Because she was afraid that other children would hurt Will.

    C. Because Will's grandparents told her they had a good way with children.

    D. Because she didn't know how to stop Will from hurting others.

【3】The underlined words "cautious about" in Paragraph 3 mean ___________.

    A. careful about  B. excited about

    C. angry at   D. interested in

【4】What does the writer want to tell us by writing this passage?

    B. Children are more likely to listen to their grandparents.

    D. Old people are really good at bringing up children.

  • 28、The government says spending £4.2 million on planting trees in towns and cities will improve the quality of people’s lives. But do trees really make people happy?

Some British and US surveys suggest a thick green lawn, or well-landscaped yard can increase the government property prices by as much as 15%. But the government’s Big Tree Plant campaign, which aims to plant one million trees in English urban areas over the next four years, says trees are not only good for our bank balance, but they do wonders for our happiness. And it says getting people to plant makes communities even happier. So do people really care about trees and do they improve lives? Margaret Lipscombe, director of urban programs at the Tree Council, says, “Not only are trees beautiful but they are practical. Trees also encourage healthier lifestyles and studies have shown people are calmer when trees are in their community,” A US study suggests that patients who have a view of nature through hospital windows recover better after operations.

Ms. Lipscombe says that the trees have also been known to slow down the traffic because drivers will go more slowly when there is something in their sights. She admits some people have negative feelings about trees because they worry about slipping on berries, bird droppings on cars or blocked light.

Ms. Lipscombe also says when she first moved into the area, there were no trees on her street. “I t was an area where there were lots of factories with high walls. It looked like an abandoned place that you didn’t want, especially as a woman on your own. Now everything is different. With lots of trees around, the street looks more attractive. People are not as frightened and no longer run down the road to get home. The trees also bring people out onto the street and make a stronger community feel.”

1What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?

    A. The use of trees in medical treatment

    B. The benefits of trees to people’s lives

    C. The role of trees in cutting down government expense

    D. How to make the best of trees

2What can be inferred from Ms. Lipscombe’s words in the last paragraph?

    A. Trees may offer people a sense of safety.

    B. Trees may help people forget sad memories.

    C. Factories should be built where people live.

    D. Women shouldn’t go out alone at night.

3Where does this passage most probably come from?

    A. A news report

    B. A scientific report

    C. A health magazine

    D. A textbook

  • 29、Check out our tsunami facts and learn some interesting information related to these great walls of water that can cause so much destruction. Find out what causes tsunamis and read about some notable recent examples of tsunamis that have occurred around the globe.

Tsunamis are huge waves of water that are usually caused by earthquakes or volcanic eruptions. As a tsunami approaches the shore, water may move back from the coast. If it is shallow enough, the water may be pulled back hundreds of meters. If you are in the area, observing this is a good indication that a tsunami is on the way.

Regions in tsunami danger zones often have warning systems in place to give people as much time to evacuate as possible. When tsunamis hit shallow water (often near the coast), they slow down but increase in height.

An earthquake in the Indian Ocean off Indonesia in December 2004 caused a tsunami that killed over 200,000 people in 14 countries. In March 2011, the Tohoku earthquake off the eastern coast of Japan caused a tsunami that was a major factor in the death of over 15,000 people. The tsunami waves created by the Tohoku earthquake reached heights of over 40 metres (131 feet) in mine areas, wiping out coastal towns and causing a number of nuclear accidents.

The Japanese word “tsunami” literally means “harbour wave”. Tsunamis are sometimes referred to as tidal waves but this term has fallen out of favour because tsunamis are not related to tides.

【1】Which of the following shows a tsunami is coming soon?

A.The water near the shore is pulled back.

B.The water marches towards the coast.

    C.An earthquake takes place.

D.The water near the shore is very shallow.

【2】In the Tohoku earthquake, over 15,000 people died mainly because of ________.

    A.the earthquake itself

    B.the lack of warning systems

C.the tsunami caused by the earthquake

D.the nuclear accidents caused by the tsunami

【3】What does the underlined word “evacuate” in Paragraph 3 mean?

    A.Leave.

    B.Watch.

    C.Explore.

    D.Communicate.

【4】What can we learn from the passage?

A.There is no sign before the approach of a tsunami.

B.More people died in Indonesia tsunami than in Tohoku tsunami.

C.Some nuclear accidents happened after Indonesia tsunami.
