二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Michele Gentile, an Italian bookseller, is offering free books to children in exchange for plastic bottles to recycle.

Michele owns Ex Libris Cafe in Polla,a small town in southern Italy. He said he thought of the recycling program, because he wanted to inspire children in the small town to read and pay attention to the environment.

'My goal is to spread the passion and love for books among those people in Italy who do not usually read while at the time helping the environment," Gentile explained.

The idea for the initiative (倡议) came after Gentile collaborated with a nearby middle school on an aluminum recycling project. Working together, the schoolchildren and Gentile collected enough cans to purchase books for an entire classroom. His new program too off from there and has already spread into northern Italy: Gentile's hopes his work will continue to make headlines and become a worldwide initiative.

The free books come from customers in Gentile's shop who have donated money to purchase a 'suspended" book. The idea comes from a World War II practice in which customers would buy two Coffees: one for themselves and another for the next person in line. Gentile has been using the extra books as part of his recycling initiative,

While Gentile's program is a great way to recycle and get kids to read, it also brings awareness to the growing problem of plastic waste. Single-use plastics make up around 26 percent of all the plastics in the world, only 14 percent of which are recycled. Plastics that end up in landfills take around 500 years to decompose (分解),is a major concern for environmentalists.

Cutting down on plastic waste is important if we want to better the environment for future generations, and recycling programs like Gentile's book giveaway are a great way to meet that goal.

【1】What is the purpose of Gentile's book giveaway?

A.To sell more coffee and books.

    B.To attract more customers.

C.To collect money for a new project.

    D.To inspire reading and recycling.

【2】How did Gentile come up with the idea?

A.Working with a school to recycle cans.

B.Seeing school kids don't like reading.

C.Donating books for a local school.

    D.Buying a “suspended” book for a child.

【3】Who pay for the books of the project?

    A.The local government.

    B.Gentile himself.

    C.Some publishers.

    D.His customers.

【4】Which of the following is the best title for the text?

    A.An Italian's Reading Initiative

B.Recycling Can Get Kids Free Books

    C.Michele's Way of Doing Business

D.A New Way to Deal with Plastic Waste

  • 22、A recent study has followed the origins, or beginnings of the family of languages that include modern Japanese, Korean, Turkish and Mongolian. The findings show a shared genetic ancestor for the hundreds of millions of people who speak what the researchers call Transeurasian(跨欧亚的) languages. Such languages had their origin with millet farmers who lived in an area in northeastern China about 9,000 years ago. Millet is a small, round whole grain. It was an important early crop as hunter-gatherers became farmers.

The study’s findings show how the use of agriculture following the Ice Age powered the movements of some of the world’s major language families. The research highlights the complex beginnings of modern populations and cultures.

Martine Robbeets, head of the Archaeolinguistic Research Group, said people often think of Japan, Korea and China as powerful nations representing one language, one culture and one people. “All languages, cultures and humans, including those in Asia, are mixed.” Robbeets said. “Accepting that the roots of one’s language, culture or people lie beyond the present national boundaries is to surrender identity, which some people are not yet prepared to make.”

The researchers studied data of vocabulary from the 98 languages. They identified a group of words related to agriculture and created a language family tree. The researchers examined data from 255 archaeological sites in China, Japan, Korea and eastern Russia. They studied ancient objects including pottery, stone tools and plant and animal remains. They also included the dating of 269 ancient crop remains from different areas.

The researchers found that farmers in northeastern China eventually grew rice and wheat along with millet. The crops spread along with farming populations to Korea by about 1300 BC and from there to Japan after about 1000 BC. As the ancient farmers moved across northeastern Asia, related languages spread into Siberia, Korea and Japan over thousands of years.

【1】According to the study, what do Transeurasian languages originate from?

    A.Ice Age people.

    B.Ancient Japanese.

    C.Ancient millet farmers.

    D.Early hunter-gatherers.

【2】What does the underlined word “surrender” probably mean in paragraph 3?

    A.give up

    B.maintain

    C.take in

    D.destroy

【3】How do the researchers conduct their study?

    A.By giving examples.

    B.By analyzing some statistics.

    C.By setting down general rules.

    D.By doing an experiment.

【4】What is the main idea of the text?

A.Food has a close relationship with culture diversity.

B.A large language family has ancient origins in China.

C.Human activities lead to different language movements.

D.The research on the language family’s beginnings counts.

  • 23、It does not matter who wins. We are told that from day one. Usually, that statement is followed by some remark about being a loser. If we do not care who wins, then why do we compete? Fun, experience, the chance to meet new people --- these are the reasons we try to outdo each other.

People will compete over anything. Every Christmas, my neighbors and I have a little Christmas light competition. It is heaven for the electric company, but I think we give Will Rogers Airport a scare. It is bright enough to land a plane in our front yards. I admit that last year my neighbors won, but only because they bought every strand of lights Wal-Mart had before I could get there.

Personal competitions are great, but we get a little carried away. I cannot stand to see coaches shout at kids playing sports. Who cares if someone messes up and the other team advances?

I’m tired of people competing just to win. It happens not only in sports, but in music competitions, too. People auditioning(试音)for chair placement in certain bands can get really unfriendly. This year I did not audition for a certain band, but I went to auditions anyway. This was the first time I actually had the opportunity to comprehend the whole picture.

Other times I’ve been the person who was nervous and anxious. This time, I sat back and observed everyone else. I came to the realization that the people who aren’t so good are terrified of the good people, and the good people are scared stiff that the bad people have taken lessons and can now show them up. Unless a person is on the outside looking in, I don’t think anyone realizes this.

Maybe competing is human nature, but we shouldn’t let it influence our judgment. Being disrespectful to opponents(对手), letting competition become our life, and becoming so involved that we close ourselves off from friends and family is not the meaning of competition.

A little competition is healthy, so it shouldn’t hurt anyone. If it does, someone somewhere needs to back off, find the good thing hidden inside, and try it again. Winning isn’t everything, and losing isn’t the end of the world.

【1The author mentions his competition with his neighbors to __________.

    A. make excuses for his failure

    B. express his concern about the airport

    C. imply his neighbor cheated in the competition

    D. show people really care about the result of competition

2The underlined word “this” in Paragraph 5 refers to ________.

    A. the rules of competition

    B. competitors’ effort to win

    C. the influence of competition on life

    D. the negative attitude to competition

3From the passage, we can learn that _______.

    A. the author failed the audition

    B. competitors may be unfriendly to each other

    C. it is coaches who always mess up the match

    D. those who observe opponents calmly always win

4Which of the following opinions does the author probably accept?

    A. Competition for the job is fierce.

    B. Winning or losing is none of people’s concern.

    C. Competition is healthy, but it can get out of hand.

    D. The disadvantages of competition outweigh the benefits.

  • 24、The Top 4 Beaches on the East Coast

    Jekyll Island, Georgia

Lying off the coast of Georgia, this 5,700-acre barrier island is famous for its nesting sea turtles and hermit crabs. Glory Beach got its name because producers of the 1989 movie Glory, featuring Matthew Broderick, Morgan Freeman, and Denzel Washington built a long- boardwalk to the beach that remains in place.

    Block Island, Rhode Island

Accessible by ferry, Block Island shows New England charm. It's worth the effort to get to Mohegan Bluffs, where you can experience a set of 141 wooden steps leading down to the sand. With clay cliffs (陶土崖) and a view that reaches Montauk at the eastern tip of Long Island, this beach is especially unique.

    Nantucket, Massachusetts

Great point, at the easternmost end of the island of Nantucket, is one of the most secret beaches in the world. That's because you need a four-wheel drive vehicle and a beach permit to get there. Once you do, you'll find miles of beachfront and a historic lighthouse.

    East Hampton, New York

Named the best beach in the county in 2013 , Main Beach in East Hampton is known for its wide stretch of sand plus a snack (点心) bar, bathrooms and lockers. On-site parking is only available to local village people but there are free beach shuttles (班车) available.
