二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   When you hear the word “birthmark”, you probably think of one of those black or brown spots that you have on your body. For me, it’s differentI have them on my lips and inside my mouth. I’m used to being asked, “What are those black marks on your lips?” When I tell people they’re birthmarks, they usually say, “That’s strange.” I used to consider them ugly. However, my mom calls them beauty marks.

In pictures, I used to hide my birthmarks by pursing my lips so I wouldn’t have to deal with people’s questions. As I was growing up, people wore me out with them. Some people would ask me the same questions even before knowing my name. In society I feel like we judge people by their looks before personality.

My birthmarks are caused by a genetic condition from my mom's side of the family. My mom’s mom has birthmarks on her lips, and my mom’s uncle and my uncle have some on their bodies. Every year I plan to have a procedure to remove them. But when imagining the process, I always get nervous and give up.

My cousin faces a similar challenge. She has a huge birthmark that takes up her whole arm. She’s never tried to hide it or change her appearance. Once, her grandmother told her that the birthmark looked extremely prominent and suggested that she should wear long sleeves more often. If my cousin had actually taken that suggestion, she wouldn’t be such a person as she is.

Inspired by my cousin, I am finally accepting who I am and now I don’t hesitate when someone asks me about them either. I say, “They’re beauty marks” and smile without pursing my lips.

1How did the author feel when asked about the birthmarks?

A.She felt excited to show her difference. B.She felt annoyed to give others an answer.

C.She was scared to be made fun of by people. D.She was bored to be faced with the question.

2What can be inferred about the author’s cousin?

A.She dislikes talking about her birthmark. B.She never judges others by their looks.

C.She is more confident than the author. D.She has taken her grandma’s suggestion.

3What does the underlined word “prominent” in paragraph 4 mean?

    A.Brilliant. B.Obvious. C.Harmful. D.Impressive.

  • 27、I have a friend who bird watches. She feels comfortable whenever she’s doing it. If you ask her why she likes it, she will say things like “Well, birds are the world’s most magical creatures.” I have another friend who knits. She likes it because it’s satisfying, and has an astonishingly impressive impact on people for whom being able to knit gloves is out of reach.

As a term, “hobby” has always been of arguable meaning. Ask someone what they think a hobby is, and you’ll get a dictionary definition that they will have just looked up on their phones and, then, a passionate speech on all of the activities that can under no circumstances be put into groups as hobbies by their own highly unique and inflexible standards. Being online is not a hobby, apparently, nor is listening to music.

Hardly anyone knows what a hobby is, and this is particularly the case now that so many of us are spending our leisure time online arguing about these sorts of basic definitions with people, as the writer Max Read put it in an essay, “to whom the world has been created again every morning, for whom every settled argument of modernity must be rewritten, but this time with their engagement.”

Even taking these difficulties into account, however, it seems obvious that birdwatching and knitting are classic hobbies. They are enjoyable, involve practice and reward effort, and they are given immediate access to a group with the same interests. They are the sorts of hobbies advice columnists (专栏作家) have in mind when people write in about their imbalanced lives. It’s interesting, then, that not one of my two clearly hobby-having friends would admit to the practice.

They worried that their hobbies, which give them pleasure and keep them far from their computers, made them seem like they had too much leisure time and too Lew inner resources that would enable them to naturally avoid boredom. They are fully paid-up members of society, with busy lives, fulfilling interpersonal relationships and, again, hobbies that make them happy. It’s just that hobbies have an undeservedly bad reputation, one made worse by the Internet, like everything else.

The birdwatcher said the problem with having a hobby was that it made people seem like they were contributing and learning nothing. The knitter said that she personally connected hobbies with having no friends and no idea of what normal people do to have fun, Actually, they do not want to be seen as mad people who intentionally get away from the correct course.

Well, I enjoy certain light operas. I play music for my own amusement. And yes, I am an ordinary student, and that is not a sign of madness.

【1】The author mentions two friends with different hobbies in Paragraph 1 mainly to .

    A.explain the definition of “hobby”

B.attract the readers’ attention to hobbies

C.stress the importance of having a hobby

D.compare two different types of hobbies

【2】What does the author mean by quoting Max Read in Paragraph 3?

A.“Hobby” as a term can only be defined without the Internet.

B.People online discuss the definition of “hobby” to change lives.

C.People create a new world by expressing their ideas of hobbies online.

D.It is hard for online people to reach an agreement on the definition of “hobby”.

【3】What can be inferred from the two friends’ concerns about their hobbies?

A.They are afraid of being seen as crazy people.

B.They fear their hobbies are not impressive enough.

C.They find it necessary to share hobbies to balance their lives.

D.They refuse to share their feelings about their hobbies with mad people.

【4】What does the author intend to tell us in the last paragraph?

A.Hobbies are great for people’s mental health.

B.Different people have their own standards of hobbies.

C.It is reasonable and normal for people to have hobbies.

D.People who suffer from madness can also have hobbies.

  • 29、   Before I begin with my speech on Rainwater Harvesting, let me first extend warm thanks to all the parents for coming together under one roof and making our event a success. As we have been taught in our school the benefits of rainwater harvesting, all the children decided to spread the knowledge amongst their families and friends and enlighten everyone about its benefits.

Rainwater harvesting is an interesting method to collect and store rainwater for such uses as landscape irrigation, animal raising, gardening, etc. When the rain comes, we never make any efforts towards preserving that water. The water can be collected from different hard surfaces, like terrace and/or other artificial aboveground tough surfaces. If the climate is dry, such as that in South Australia, the technique of rainwater harvesting can prove to be extremely beneficial for the environment.

There are many rural households that have to conserve all the water for their property and rainwater more often than not offers comparatively a better quality supply to the household than river, dams or bore water. Rainwater harvesting however is not only meant for rural regions as many urban households too are joined to a reticulated(网状的) , treated source of water supply. This method of rainwater harvesting can considerably bring down the use of main water sources.

Now, what are the advantages of rainwater harvesting? One of the major benefits is that it will help you bring down your water bills, secondly you will have an alternative source of water supply during the situation of water crisis and thirdly it will help you maintain your green, blossoming garden. Excessive dependency on climate as well as tank size is not right and so rainwater harvesting can help reduce the burden drastically on the main sources of water. Rainwater harvesting also helps overcome the fear of storm water runoff; thus reducing the risk of local flooding or scouring of brooks. You can collect rainwater from various rooftops, based on what quality of rainwater is required.

【1】What is the purpose of the speech?

    A.To advocate water preservation.

    B.To promote rainwater harvesting.

C.To thank parents coming to the event.

D.To educate people on saving water.

    【2】Rainwater harvesting is especially important________.

    A.on tough surfaces

    B.at scenic spots

    C.in dry areas

    D.on animal farms

【3】Rainwater harvesting is beneficial to urban people in that it ________.

    A.keeps the gardens green

    B.offers a better quality supply

    C.comes from rivers and dams

D.reduces the consumption of treated water

【4】What will be talked about in the following paragraph?

    A.Methods of collecting rainwater.

    B.Means of treating rainwater.

    C.Water reservation and climate change.

    D.Disadvantages of rainwater harvesting.

四、短文填空 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 31、Directions: Complete the following passage by using the words in the box. Each word can only be used once. Note that there is one word more than you need. 6%

The next time you’re riding a subway or bus, pay attention to your fellow passengers. Chances are you’ll see plenty of them with their heads down, tapping the screens of their tablets or 1 on their smartphones. While these folks may be making good use of their time by staying 2, their bodies are paying a heavy price for such convenience.

As hand-held devices such as smartphones and tablets are becoming more common, users are reporting some new 3 problems. Florida chiropractor (脊椎按摩师) Dean Fishman began noticing an increased number of his patients 4 of neck and shoulder pain. He traced these 5 to the overuse of hand-held devices, specifically the action of bending the neck, and created the term “Text Neck.” As if the painful symptoms weren’t bad enough, Fishman warns that an untreated case of Text Neck could lead to permanent spinal (脊柱的) damage. He founded the Text Neck Institute in an effort to treat and educate those suffering from Text Neck. Treatments offered there include chiropractic care, physical therapy, massage therapy and exercise planning.

In order to avoid or reduce the possibility of getting Text Neck, use the following basic principles:

Avoid awkward positioning. Don’t strain (滥用) your neck, and stay aware of how your body is positioned in relation to the device.

Take frequent 6 when using any kind of mobile device.

When using a tablet, use a case that can back up the device at comfortable viewing angle.

For those who simply can’t take their eyes off their devices, there is an ironic twist – downloading a special app(应用程序)could help. Dr. Fishman has released an app called the Text Neck Indicator App, which measures the angle of your smartpphone. When the angle is appropriate, a green light appears in the upper corner of your screen. But when the angle puts you at risk for neck strain, the light turns red, obliging you to adjust your angle.
