21、Only 366 North Atlantic right whales are left, representing a shocking 8% decline in a single year and the lowest number in about 20 years for this famous species. Human impacts—specifically fishing nets and ship strikes —remain the biggest threats to the survival of this species in eastern Canada and the United States.
North Atlantic right whales have been in decline since 2011 when the species was at an estimated 481. In the past decade, it has decreased by 30%. Recent research shows these threats are affecting their overall health with less energy to devote toward growth and reproduction (繁殖), and body lengths reducing over the past four decades. Researchers estimate there are fewer than 100 breeding (繁育的) females alive and more than 86% of identified whales had been entangled (被网困住) at least once in their lifetime.
There is still hope: in 2021, scientists tracked 18 mother-kid pairs, a number that is cause for optimism—though still well below the annual average of 23 pairs from the previous decade.
Industry representatives, government agencies, and organizations, including WWF, gathered in October 2021 at the annual North Atlantic Right Whale Association meeting to discuss and arrange right whale conservation efforts in the US and Canada.
“It’s going to be challenging, but everyone involved in right whale conservation believes we can create an environment where right whales can bounce back,” said Chris Johnson, the global leader for WWF’s Protecting Whales and Dolphins initiative. “However, it’s going to take significant investment and the greatest urgency and commitment to create conditions where we prevent entanglements and collisions with ship in the whales’ critical habitats.”
【1】Which of the following best describes the right whale population?
A.Well conserved.
B.Slowly decreasing.
C.Rapidly growing.
D.Critically endangered.
【2】What does Chris Johnson say about the right whale conservation?
A.It needs the government to ban fishing in certain areas.
B.It will not work without fund from the government.
C.It can help increase the number of right whales.
D.It is not practical and will fail eventually.
【3】What can we learn about the female right whales?
A.Most of them have been once entangled.
B.Mother whales may have slightly decreased.
C.There are less female right whales than male right whales.
D.Their population has decreased to 70% of that a decade ago.
【4】What can be inferred about the right whale species?
A.Their size has been decreasing due to human impact.
B.They may have found home in other parts of the ocean.
C.They were hunted by people for their meant in the past.
D.They are well on the way to dying out if not well protected.

I am a single working mother and going to college for a better life for my three-year-old child and myself.I am taking a nurse course called “Urban Community(社区)”.We were asked to do a major project on problems in urban communities.I chose the topic “Homeless”.
Each day I would walk down the streets of the homeless and offer them something to drink and to eat.I know it’s tough to survive on the streets.Last night I ran into a group of 30 kids who were living on the streets in New York.____________and I just wanted to cry.But I had to be strong.
I asked about their families and if they contacted them to let them know they were alive. Most of them said, “NO!” They all looked like a happy family and they took care of one another.I tried to persuade them to get help and to contact their families but they did not want to.I did not want to make them to do it as they had their own reasons.
All these kids were very respectful.None of them was high on drugs nor were they drinking. Some of them enjoyed reading and writing. Some of them enjoyed skateboarding, dancing and playing music.
One girl asked me if I could give her a hug and I did so.She started to cry and said, “Thank you for not treating us as freaks(怪人)like everyone else does.People don’t realize that we all have our own problems and some are worse than others.” She told me that her stepfather (继父) was extremely mean to her and her mother did not believe her.She ran away. Her street name was Little Mary.
They were good kids just trying to make ends meet.I told them that I didn’t have much to offer because I was a single mother just making ends meet.I had offered them sandwiches and drinks. They were so happy to have something to eat and told me that I couldn’t change the world but at least there was someone who really cared.

24、Left to their own devices, most children won’t hesitate to lick a doorknob or wipe a runny nose with their sleeve. But is there any truth to the idea that their affection for getting dirty can be beneficial to their health?
That theory dates back to the 1800s, when European doctors realized that farmers suffered fewer allergies than city residents. However, it didn’t gain widespread attention until 1989, when British epidemiologist David Strachan discovered that youngsters with older siblings were less likely to be infected than other kids with hay fever. Strachan suggested that early childhood infections transmitted by insanitary contact helped foster a strong immune(免疫的)system.
His theory, called the hygiene hypothesis(卫生假说), provides a convenient explanation for why allergies and autoimmune disorders, have increased 300 percent or more in the US since the 1950s. Maybe Western societies have become too clean for their own good, and parents too fearful of a little dirt. As microbiologist Graham Rook notes, getting a bit messy can help cultivate the thousands of microbial species that call the body home and keep it healthy. Providing that boost can be as easy as having pets, tending chickens, or playing in a green space.
It’s also wise to go easy on the antibiotics(抗生素). Although they can be lifesavers for patients with severe bacterial infections, there’s “a real risk of harm” from overuse, says John Lynch, a doctor at the University of Washington School of Medicine. “Regaining your native microbiota can be extremely hard, “ he explains. All this is not to say youngsters should be messy. You definitely want them to wash their hands regularly, and cleaning high-touch surfaces is vital to avoid unpleasant infections like norovirus, Rook advised. Just don’t go overboard and kill the bacteria on everything. As it turns out, kids probably do need a few germs to stay healthy.

A.Cautious.
B.Supportive.
C.Critical.
D.Indifferent.
【4】What might be Rook’s advice for parents?
A.Leaving high-touch surfaces dirty.
B.Allowing kids to play in the garden.
C.Replacing kids’ pets with artificial ones.
D.Making the playrooms absolutely clean.

26、读写任务
How many times have you heard the expression that most people spend more time planning their vacation than they do planning their lives. I would expand that expression by adding that most people spend more time "thinking" about their vacation than they do thinking about what's important in their life.
While rest and relaxation are a must in living a balanced life, it's now what we were created to do. After all, the Master Creator took his R&R (Rest and Recreation) on the seventh day, only after six days of "definitely directed thought."
Wallace D. Wattles, wrote "There is no labor from which most people shrink as they do from that of sustained and continuous thought; it is the hardest work in the world." And yet it is the first and primary labor of achievement.
What is your life's purpose or your personal mission statement? Is it written down? Do you review it and think about it often? Is your life organized around your purpose and a set of goals that support that purpose?
Without purpose and goals --- definitely directed thought --- you are like the proverbial "shop without a rudder(舵)." There is power in your purpose and in your goals. It is the power that takes you over obstacles, the fuel that pushes you toward the life you expect.
