The eyebrows(眉毛) have many uses. 【4】 When the eyebrows are raised, normally the person is shocked or surprised. The greater the surprise, the more raised they will be. • 27、   Understanding the link between a clean environment and human life is not a new concept. In fact, it was noticed as early as ancient Rome. Today we see how green living has infiluenced our everyday lives. There is a growing community of people who embrace a zero waste lifestyle and make changes to the way they live to reduce their carbon footprint.

Living a zero waste lifestyle means doing one’s best to achieve the aim of not sending anything to a landfill. People who adopt this lifestyle ultimately cut down on their waste by reducing what they need and want. They reuse what they own, sending few things to be recycled.

Many people who adopt the zero waste lifestyle claim to be frustrated by the many harmful chemical substances found in beauty and cleaning products. They also find the uses of disposable items and excessive packaging. For example, how many times have we had to peel away layers of plastic wrap and cardboard before finally taking out the item which we had bought? Instead of buying pre-packed food and goods, those who identify with the zero waste philosophy tend to shop in stores that allow them to make purchases and bring their own cloth bags and glass jars to store their purchases.

Many people may have the misconception that it is easier to live a zero waste lifestyle in the West. Nevertheless, Malaysian environmental journalist, Ms. Aurora Tin, has proven that a zero waste lifestyle is possible even in the Asian context. Instead of going to the supermarket to buy pre-packaged foods, Ms. Tin now visits the wet market and brings her own bags for vegetables. She has even stopped using store-bought toothpaste and makes her own toothpaste from coconut oil and baking soda. This lifestyle may be too big a change for the average person, but we could follow her suit to make gradual changes to our own lives.

【1】Which of the following is a zero waste lifestyle?

A.Bringing a resuable container to take away food.

B.Choosing appliances that cost less money.

C.Turning off a device to stop using power.

D.Classifying the garbage before throwing it away.

【2】What may disappoint a person who adopts a zero waste lifestyle?

    A.Recycable carboard.

    B.Excessive packaging.

    C.Glass jars to store purchases.

    D.Natural substances in cleaning products.

【3】What is the main idea of the last paragraph?

A.How do people live a zero waste lifestyle.

B.Why Ms. Tin chooses to live a zero waste lifestyle..

C.We can also practice a zero waste lifestyle in Asia.

D.It is easy to live a zero waste lifestyle in the West.

【4】What is the best title of the passage?

    A.Living a zero waste lifestyle.

B.Going green is more than a fashion.

C.A zero waste lifetyle is easy to achieve.

    D.Making environmentally-conscious decisions.

  • 28、I will always remember my mother's last few days in this world.

On February 14th, 2000 my class went on a field trip to the beach. I had so much fun. When we returned to school, my teacher told me to go to the headmaster's office. When I got into the office, I saw a police office. Suddenly I realized something was wrong. The police office told me what had happened and we went to pick my sister up. After that, we went to the hospital and waited. Time went slowly. Finally, we got to see our mother. It was terrible.

On the next day, the headmaster came and told my two teachers what had happened. I was taking a rest that day. I knew it had something to do with my mother. I kept thinking that she either died or had gotten better. How I wished that she had gotten better. When my teacher took me outside, my sister ran up to me. She started crying, “She's gone. Teresa, mommy's gone. She's dead.” I couldn't believe it. We jumped into the car and drove straight to the hospital. Most of my family were there. The silence was terrible. I knew I had to say goodbye.

Today when I look back, I still miss my mother very much, but I know that I will live. My mother was a strong mother, who had the biggest heart. My mother was an angel walking on the earth. I will always remember her as living. When someone is asked who their hero (英雄) is, they usually say someone famous, like Michael Jordan or Britney Spears, When someone asks me who my hero is,   I tell them, my mother. My mother lives every day. That is what makes her a true hero.

  • 29、There are many reasons why people can’t get a good night’s sleep and as with any other health conditions, things are not likely to improve until you find a way to break the cycle.

These are some of the main factors that need to be addressed.

    Worry and stress

We have all been kept awake by many factors that cause worry and stress in our lives. Money problems, relationship issues and work stresses can have you sitting up all night. A useful habit is to download your thoughts at the end of the day. Keep a pen and paper next to your bed and before you go to sleep, write down your thought and worries, create a to-do list for the following day or set down solutions and ideas that relate to work.

    Diet and eating patterns

What and when you eat can have a major impact on your ability to sleep. Eating too late or indulging in a rich or spicy meal can keep you awake. These foods take a long while to digest and the after effects of indigestion and heartburn are not going to set you up well for a good quality sleep.

A research suggests that both calcium and magnesium may be linked to poor sleep. Even low intakes of magnesium found in green vegetables, beans, nuts and seeds have been shown to make it harder to stay asleep. Calcium is found in dairy foods, soybeans and green vegetables and low levels have also been shown to make it more difficult to nod off.

    Alcohol and caffeine

Tea, coffee and energy drinks contain caffeine that helps to stimulate the nervous system and make you more alert, which is great if you need a pick-me-up. Dosing up on caffeine during the day can affect your ability to sleep later on in the evening. Try limiting your intake of caffeine to the morning and switch to decaffeinated options such as herbal teas. Alcohol is a double-edged sword when it comes to sleep. While a little may help to induce slumber, even in small amounts it can cause fragmented sleep patterns.

    Bedroom environment

“Your bedroom should be dark once the lights are switched off because melatonin, a sleep-regulating hormone, is very light-sensitive. Maintaining the right temperature can also help with sleep as a room that is too hot may prevent your core temperature from going down, which is essential for switching on the sleep mechanism within the body.

1Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

    A. Melatonin is a chemical in our bodies that disturbs our sleep.

    B. The lower the temperature is, the easier you will find it to sleep.

    C. Drinking a little coffee in the morning may not affect your sleep at night.

    D. You should eat more vegetables and wholegrains for supper to get a better sleep.

2The passage can be found in the column of ________ in a newspaper.

    A. Science   B. Health   C. Fashion   D. Education
