二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、It's the best kept secret of modern science: 16 years of the Human Genome Project suggest that genes play little or no role in explaining differences in intelligence. While genes have been found for physical features, such as height or eye colour, they are not the reason you are smarter (or not) than your sisters and brothers. 【1】.

Very likely, you will simply not believe this and are sure from your own experience that it's "a bit of both" nature and nurture. But those genes that have been found only explain 1%-5% of any psychological characters.【2】. It's something scientists call “missing heritability”. Robert Plomin, one of the world's leading geneticists, told the Guardian last year. "I have been looking for these genes for 15 years and I don't have any."

Of course, babies are born different and biological transmission of traits (特征传送) does occur - it's just not genetic. For instance, there is abundant evidence that autism (自闭症) may be due to what happens during pregnancy, prematurity or difficulties during the birth itself.【3】. But it has been proven many times over that the right kind of nurture can correct it.

【4】. It means that most babies have the potential to succeed in conventional terms in exams and careers. There is no inherent (先天的) reason why children from low-income families cannot succeed as much as those from affluent homes.

A.Neither are they why you are less smarter than your brothers and sisters

B.Nor are they why you are like your high-achieving or dull parents

    C.Your genes decide your achievement

D.This is not just my opinion

E.About a third of babies are born "difficult" for these reasons

F.That it's not genes is extremely good news

  • 22、At first, I didn’t recognize the symptoms that we all had in common. Friends mentioned that they were having trouble concentrating. It wasn’t burnout — we still had energy. It wasn’t depression — we didn’t feel hopeless. We just felt somewhat joyless and aimless.

It turns out there’s a name for that: languishing.

Languishing is a sense of inactivity and emptiness. It feels as if you’re muddling (应付) through your days, looking at your life through a foggy windshield (挡风玻璃).

In psychology, we think about mental health on a spectrum (范围) from depression to flourishing (精力旺盛). Flourishing is the peak of well-being. Depression is the valley of ill-being. Languishing is the neglected middle child of mental health. It’s the emptiness between depression and flourishing — the absence of well-being. You’re not functioning at full capacity. Languishing dulls your motivation, disrupts your ability to focus, and greatly increases the possibility that you’ll cut back on work.

Part of the danger is that when you’re languishing, you might not notice the dulling of delight or the decreasing of drive. You don’t catch yourself slipping slowly into aloneness; you’re indifferent to your indifference. When you can’t see your own suffering, you don’t seek help or even do much to help yourself.

So what can we do about it? People who became more focused on their work managed to avoid languishing. Interrupted attention is an enemy of engagement and excellence. To go beyond languishing, give yourself some uninterrupted time. It clears out constant distractions (分心) and gives us the freedom to focus. And try starting with small wins by focusing on a challenge that matters to you – an interesting project, a worthwhile goal, or a meaningful conversation.

We still have a lot to learn about what causes languishing and how to cure it, but naming it might be a first step. It could help to defog our vision, giving us a clearer window into what had been an unclear experience. It could remind us that we weren’t alone: languishing is common and shared.

By acknowledging that so many of us are languishing, we can start giving voice to quiet despair and lighting a path out of the emptiness.

【1】Which definition best suits the word “languishing”?

    A.Feeling exhausted and without hope.

B.Becoming weaker or failing to improve.

C.Making someone want to achieve something.

D.Going beyond the usual limits of something.

【2】Which of the following can be described as languishing?

A.Seeking help when you are suffering.

B.Realizing that you are not alone in despair.

    C.Giving yourself some uninterrupted time.

D.Being indifferent to your lack of enthusiasm.

【3】What could psychologists do to help solve the problems of languishing?

    A.Give people more freedom.

    B.See it as depression.

    C.Name it clearly.

    D.Remove it from a spectrum.

【4】Why is it significant to know languishing is common and shared?

A.We can let the silent despair speak up and find a way out.

B.We can continue to learn more about languishing.

C.We can see it as basically the same as depression.

D.We can study it as the complete opposite of flourishing.

  • 23、   As is known, honesty is a virtue. It is admired in every culture. It means telling the truth and being fair and upright. So, is it necessary to be honest all the time? Could upping one's personal honesty light up a pleasure center in his own brain?

My 6-year-old daughter said that telling the truth made her feel "gold in her brain". Once she asked me if the cat really went to sleep last year, or if that actually meant that I had killed him. I sighed, wondering if I should wait to start this honesty project until my child grew up. But I braved it and told her, "Yes, I had made the choice for him, because he was suffering and I wanted him to be comfortable." It struck me that the choice to lie or be honest was often a choice between two equally undesirable things. Telling my daughter the truth did not make me happier, but lying would not either.

There was another scene. When a client accidentally paid me twice as much money for a project—sending a $1,000 check a week after he'd paid methere was no internal debate. It was $1,000, so obviously, I notified the client. But when the McDonald's cashier gave me an extra dollar in change and the line had been so long and all I wanted was a Diet Coke and my kids were acting crazily in the back seat, it was a different story. Even though I gave the dollar back, I almost didn't, because an extra dollar was such a small thing and seemed somehow justified. Had I not focused on honesty, I would not have given it back.

When people were more honest, they also tended to feel better about their relationships and social interactions, the researchers found. This rang true to me, mostly because I felt better about myself. And focusing on honesty helped me feel that I was doing my part. It might even make me feel as if I had gold in my brain.

1What's the function of the two questions in Paragraph 1?

A.To introduce the topic of honesty.

B.To help develop readers' good quality.

C.To remind readers to mind their manners.

D.To teach everyone not to lie but be honest.

2How did the author feel on hearing the question about the death of the cat?

    A.Guilty. B.Confused.

    C.Regretful. D.Shamed.

3What does the author mainly want to express in Paragraph 3?

A.Honesty doesn't lie in small instances.

B.Honesty is measured by the amount of money.

C.He struggled more with the small instances of honesty.

D.He experienced some different incidents about honesty.

4What's the author's opinion on honesty?

A.A white lie can be helpful.

    B.Honesty makes people better off.

C.It is essential to be honest in daily life.

D.One should be honest in small things.

  • 24、Much like people whose relatives or friends have died, orphaned (成为孤儿的) elephants get by with a little help from their friends, according to a study.

Scientists in the United States and Kenya analysed stress hormones (激素) in the baby elephants whose mothers had died, expecting to find higher levels. Instead, the support of their peers appeared to reduce the orphans’ level of anxiety.

The study, published last week in the journal Communications Biology, concluded that social relationships have a psychological impact on the young elephants. Elephants have strong familial and group ties. Before the age of nine, baby elephants rarely move away more than 30 feet (nine metres) from their mothers, and even a few hours of separation lead to joyous reunion. The bond between female elephants and their young has long been thought to reduce stress.

Expecting to find that the orphaned elephants, which tend to die early at a higher rate than those whose mothers are still alive, would be more depressed, the team analysed stress hormone levels in the waste matter of 36 young elephants in the nature reserves in northern Kenya between 2015 and 2016. Twenty-five of the elephants had lost their mothers to drought or hunting between 2009 and 2013, when a rise in the demand for ivory left many elephants on the reserves motherless.

However, the researchers were surprised to find that long-term stress hormone levels were similar among orphans and elephants with living mothers. Jenna Parker, the study’s main author and a professor at Colorado State University, said their unexpected resilience is directly linked to social support from other elephants, specifically companions of a similar age. Those with more “friends” had significantly lower stress hormone levels. The results may encourage elephant orphanages to pair up animals to help them to recover from loss and adapt to future threats.

It could be a timely move as interactions between humans and elephants are on the rise, thanks in part to drought related to climate change. Experts say the increased conflict is a threat to Kenya’s 36,000 strong elephant population.

【1】What did the scientists focus on about orphaned elephants in the study?

    A.Their peers.

    B.Their family.

    C.Their psychology.

    D.Their growth.

【2】What can we learn from paragraph 3?

A.Separation is necessary for younger elephants.

B.Young elephants are attached to their mothers.

C.Younger elephants are fond of wandering alone.

D.Female elephants dominate young elephants’ life.

【3】What does the underlined word “resilience” probably mean in paragraph 5?

    A.Difference.

    B.Anxiety.

    C.Recovery.

    D.Result.

【4】Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?

A.Orphaned Elephants Find Relief in Friends.

B.Elephants Have a Strong Bond with Mothers.

C.Stress Levels are Higher in Young Elephants.

D.Orphaned Elephants Have Been Suffering a Lot.
