二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Sixteen years ago, Eileen Doyle’s husband, an engineer, took his four children up for an early morning cup of tea, packed a small case and was never seen or heard from again. Eileen was astonished and in a state of despair. They had been a happy family and, as far as she knew, there had been nothing wrong with their marriage.

Every day of the year a small group of men and women quietly pack a few belongings and, without so much as a note or a good-bye, close the front door for the last time, leaving their debts, their worries and their confused families behind them. Last year, more than 1,200 men and nearly as many women were reported missing from home — the highest in 15 years. Many did return home within a year, but others rejected the past completely and are now living a new life somewhere under a different identity.

To those left behind this form of desertion is a terrible blow to their pride and self-confidence. Even the finality of death might be preferable. At least it does not imply rejection or failure. Worse than that, people can be left with an unfinished marriage, not knowing whether they will have to wait seven years before they are free to start a fresh life.

Clinical psychologist Paul Brown believes most departures of this kind to be well planned rather than impulsive. “It’s typical of the kind of personality which seems able to ignore other people’s pain and difficulties. Running away, like killing yourself, is a highly aggressive act. By creating an absence the people left behind feel guilty, upset and empty.”

【1】Eileen Doyle reacted that way after her husband’s leaving, because she__________.

    A. failed to hear from him for a long time

    B. had no idea what was wrong with their family life

    C. blamed herself for something wrong she did

    D. wondered why her husband took up all their children

【2】According to the passage, those people left their families behind for the following reasons except_________.

    A. they couldn’t bear their spouse (配偶)

    B. they were afraid of the burden of debts

    C. they wanted to forget the past completely

    D. they wanted to start a new life somewhere else

【3】 The man or woman left behind with an unfinished marriage usually ________.

    A. admits their responsibility for the situation

    B. feels embarrassed and useless

    C. will have no legal marriage life for seven years

    D. wishes the person who has left were dead

【4】Some people would even prefer the death to the running away of their spouse because ________.

    A. their spouse would feel greatly relieved

    B. their spouse would feel no pain during the death

    C. their spouse’s death would contribute to them starting a fresh life

    D. their spouse’s death would not bring a feeling of rejection or failure

【5】What’s the author’s attitude towards the departures of this kind?

    A. Objective.  B. Supportive.

    C. Negative.  D. Positive.

  • 22、A Norfolk sheepdog named Peggy spent most of her life working on a farm and helping her human herd animals from place to place. She was great at her job, which requires keen intelligence and the ability to listen to a shepherd’s signals. But everything changed when Peggy suddenly went deaf for unknown reasons.

Peggy was sent to an animal shelter in 2018. With the shelter full, staffers tried to find a foster family for her to spend the holidays with. Thankfully, animal welfare manager Chloe Shorten stepped up to take her in! “We decided she could stay with us temporarily while we found somewhere more permanent to take her in, but we completely fell in love with her almost immediately and it soon became clear that she wouldn’t be going anywhere!” Chloe said. “She was greasy and out of condition, untrusting, and frightened,” the shelter added.

“She soon started to bond with me and we started taking her fun places like the beach, something we don’t think she has ever experienced before,” Chloe said. “With some tender loving care and good food, Peggy soon started to adjust to life. Several months on and Peggy has blossomed into a dog who is continuing to improve daily.”

One of the biggest ways Peggy’s new family helped her adjust was getting her back to work. Working dogs are bred to do a specific job, and without a purpose, they can grow depressed and bored. So Chloe introduced the dog to hand signs and taught her to use her eyes in place of her ears while on the job. Now that she’s 10, she’s “generally retired,” but she still enjoys herding and continues to impress her family with how quickly she learns new skills.

【1】What can we infer about the Peggy from the text?

A.She is ten and has retired.

B.she went deaf due to a rare condition.

C.It was long before she adjusted to her new life.

D.She was abandoned by her former family.

【2】How many ways did the Chloe use to help Peggy adjust in the text?

    A.Two

    B.Three

    C.Five

    D.Six

【3】Why did the Chloe get Peggy back to work?

A.They were depressed and bored by her performance.

B.They wanted to help her recover her sense of hearing.

C.They needed her to help them herding animals.

D.They were concerned about her mental health.

【4】Which of the following best describes Peggy?

    A.Aggressive and shy

    B.Adaptable and gifted

    C.Untrusting and greasy

    D.Fierce and talented

  • 23、Schools need to give students all the tools they need to navigate the world when they graduate. Besides teaching the basics of reading, writing, and arithmetic, teaching about mindfulness, and mental health are important life skills for young people to have. The state of Florida agrees.

Now, public schools in Florida have been required to teach five or more hours about mental health for students in grades 6-12. This new directive was approved by the Florida Board of Education in July and is being carried out as a potential lifesaver.

The new curriculum requires students to learn about the symptoms of mental illness and where to find help if they are feeling depressed or have other issues and even teaches the adolescents how to help their friends and classmates if they see them struggling.

“We know that 50 percent of all mental illness cases begin by age 14, so we are being active in our commitment to provide our kids with the necessary tools to see them through their successes and challenges. Providing mental health instruction is another important step forward in supporting our families,” Education Commissioner Richard Corcoran said.

Florida is the third state, following New York and Virginia in 2020, to pass laws that require mental health education in schools. According to CNN, the New York law updated the health curriculum to include mental health for elementary, middle and high school students. The Virginia law required that mental health education be provided for 9th and 10th graders.

These three states in the US are taking bold steps to help youth deal with the intricacy of life as they grow from adolescents into adults. It is a confusing world they face and giving them the tools to navigate it safely is essential. Mental health is something that should be taught in schools in all the US and across the globe.

【1】What can the new curriculum bring students?

    A.Basic professional skills.

    B.The ability to use language.

    C.Emotional management skills.

    D.Diagnosis of physical diseases.

【2】What does Richard Corcoran intend to stress in paragraph 4?

A.The effect of mental illness cases.

B.The content of the health curriculum.

C.The step of mental health instruction.

D.The importance of mental health education.

【3】What does the underlined word “intricacy” mean in paragraph 6?

    A.Complexity.

    B.Purpose.

    C.Contribution.

    D.Significance.

【4】Where is the text probably taken from?

    A.A technology report.

    B.A natural science magazine.

    C.An educational website.

    D.A government document.

  • 24、In 1980, I lived in Sydney, Nova Scotia which was a dirty steel town then. The steel factory was fed by a large number of coal mines surrounding the area. I became fascinated by the mines, the miners and the life they led. One weekend, I visited the Miner’s Museum, which was built over a disused mine. Pictures of men, faces black with coal dust, hung from the walls on the main floor. Many would die from black lung disease long before they died of old age.

I was the only local in the group of tourists. Along the way, we paused to look at the displays of mining equipment from centuries long gone. At one lighted alcove (壁凹) there was a small cage. A bird once lived inside. Treated kindly by the miners, it was well fed. It sat and waited to give up its life as a warning of the deadly methane gas (沼气) the coal produced. With no color or smell, a buildup of methane would kill the miners and destroy the tunnels they worked in. The bird’s death, like a smoke detector, warned the men of danger.

“Turn off your helmet lights!” the guide then ordered in the tunnel. “I want you to experience the life of a miner.” One by one we turned off our lights. The darkness was total-so thick that you thought the very air itself had been sucked out of the mine. And the silence! The silence was complete except for the breaths of fear from my companions. In the end, when we were pulled back to the surface the warm sun had new meaning for us.

Back in my small, rented room in a basement, I closed the curtains and turned off the lights. I thought deeply about a miner’s life under the ground, black dust, no sunshine and much danger. It’s not a life I would wish on anyone. Many people may hate their jobs. There have been a few I didn’t like and complained about. Then I thought about the coal miners and realized how blessed I am.

【1】Why did the author go to the Miner’s Museum?

A.Because he wanted to record the miners.

B.Because he didn’t want to do anything else.

C.Because he was interested in the life of the miners.

D.Because he was always attracted by pictures in museums.

【2】What can be inferred from the second paragraph?

    A.The bird liked methane gas.

B.Even a little methane gas would kill the miners.

C.The tunnels would be exploded by the miners if methane gas was released.

D.It was hard for the miners to know if methane gas was released without the bird.

【3】How did the tourists feel after turning off their helmet lights?

    A.Calm and relaxed.

    B.Excited and thrilled.

    C.Fascinated and peaceful.

    D.Breathless and frightened.

【4】What does the author want to convey in the last two paragraphs?

A.He believed that he was very lucky.

B.The basement was his tunnel and mine.

C.No job could satisfy him except mining.

D.It was impossible for miners to live a happy life.
