  • 21、The new high-speed railway line between Urumqi, capital of the Xinjiang Uygur self-governing region, and Lanzhou, capital of Gansu province, has cut train travel time by half to less than 12 hours.

The dramatic improvement will benefit many families planning reunions for Spring Festival.

“For the first time,I feel home is not that far away after all,”said Liang Shaofu as he boarded a high-speed train in Urumqi with six members of his family.

The 35-year-old left Lanzhou to set up a dry fruit business in Xinjiang eight years ago,and he has now settled in Urumqi.

The 1,776-km line, which passes through Qinghai province and is the country’s first   high-speed railway to be built in a high-altitude region, came into service on Dec 26.

“We normally drive home for Spring Festival to avoid the difficulties of buying seven train tickets for the whole family during the peak season,”Liang said.“Driving can be very tiring and dangerous sometimes,so one year we even decided not to go back to Lanzhou simply to avoid the trip.”

More than 600,000 passengers traveled on the line during its first month, and the Urumqi Railway Bureau said the introduction of high-speed services will ease transport pressure during the Spring Festival peak season.

The existing usual railway line could no longer support Xinjiang’s development. All   passenger trains will gradually shift to the new link, leaving the old one to be used for goods. As a result,Xinjiang’s annual goods ability could reach 200 million metric tons from the current 70 million.

The line passes through areas that experience high winds, and it also crosses parts of the   deserted Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and the bone-dry sands of the Gobi Desert.

The project could help China to promote its high-speed railway technology abroad, said Ma Xi zhang, director of the Lanzhou-Xinjiang railway project’s_management department in Xinjiang.

【1】How long did it take to go from Urumqi to Lanzhou by the usual train before?

    A.about 12 hours.  B.About 6 hours.

    C.About 18 hours.  D.About 24 hours.

【2】What’s the main advantage of the new high-speed railway?

A.It takes more time to go to Urumqi to Lanzhou.

B.It will be more convenient for people all over the country to Xinjiang.

C.All the people in Lanzhou can return home on festivals.

D.It helps to improve Xinjiang’s development.

【3】From the passage we can learn________.

A.Xinjiang’s annual goods ability can increase nearly four times

B.the new railway technology may help more railway lines to be built abroad

C.the high-speed railway lines can’t be built across the bone-dry sands

D.the old railway lines can only carry goods now

【4】Which of the following is true according to the passage?

A.The new high-speed railway line is good for all people to go home.

B.The new high-speed railway line benefits businessmen to carry goods.

C.Taking the new train is safer than driving home from Urumqi to Lanzhou.

D.Businessmen seldom went home for Spring Festival before.

  • 22、Exercise for a Better Brain

Most of the time, your brain is the boss of your muscles --directing how you hit a ball, play the piano, or open a cereal box. 【1】 When you’re active, they send chemical signals telling your brain, “Hey, it’s time to grow!” Recent research suggests physical activity has multiple brain benefits, encouraging the birth and growth of new brain cells that supply oxygen and blood sugar to brain cells.

In a 2016 National Institute on Aging study, people who ran on a treadmill for 45 minutes three days a week boosted their levels of a brain-derived neurotropic (神经营养的) factor, a chemical that acts like fertilizer for new brain cells. 【2】

Without exercise, Suzuki says, “little baby neurons don’t get bigger and make thousands of new connections to other brain cells. With exercise, you get fully functioning adult brain cells.” Studies suggest that in younger adults, this can add to the overall number of cells in the hippocampus(海马体). 【3】 It’s a good deal. “There’s evidence these new brain cells are very active,” she says. “They’re excitable like teenagers. They get involved in more memory circuits than older cells do. You get more connections.”

【4】 If you’re inactive, a stroll around the block may be all it takes to encourage neuroplasticity, she says. And every bit counts. In a 2019 Boston University study of 2354 adults in their 40s through 60s, sedentary people who boosted their daily walking by 7500 steps or more had bigger brains than those who didn’t exercise -- equivalent to 1.4 to 2.2 fewer years of brain aging. The more light activity study participants logged, such as doing housework, shopping, gardening, or walking the dog, the greater the overall size of their brains.

    A.Again, a little goes a long way.

B.Tips have been offered as to how to properly exercise.

C.After four months of workouts, their scores improved on a memory test.

D.Studies have suggested that dying cells and brain waste can be cleared with enough exercise on a regular basis.

E.But when it comes to growing new brain cells, more and more research shows that when you exercise, your muscles take charge.

F.And once age-related brain changes begin, starting in our 30s, exercise helps keep brain cells alive longer and replaces old cells with new ones.

  • 23、With their main food source dying off, manatees (海牛) in Florida’s Indian River Lagoon have turned to eating large amounts of algae (海藻) as their food. Researchers are concerned about what this change will do to the animals’ health.

About a decade ago, a harmful algal bloom (HAB) significantly reduced the amount of seagrass in the lagoon (泻湖). These blooms happen when algae grows out of control and can have bad effects on living things in the ecosystem or use up all the oxygen in the water. Around that time is when Florida manatees went from eating primarily seagrass to eating primarily algae, a team of researchers found. Several years ago, scientists from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) noticed that many manatees were dying in the Indian River Lagoon (IRL) for an unknown reason.

Study author Aarin-Conrad Allen, a Ph.D. student at Florida International University, Institute of Environment, had just finished work on manatee diets in Belize and began studying the Florida situation. Manatees primarily eat seagrass, but will sometimes eat other foods like algae.

Researchers had collected more than 100 stomach samples from manatees that had died in the lagoon between 2013 and 2015. They found that their diet consisted of about 50% algae and 34% seagrass.

They compared data that had been archived (存档) from the late 1970s through late 1980s when the lagoon was not so unhealthy. Then, the manatees’ diets were almost 62% seagrass and only 28% algae. The rest of their diets included other plants and small fish.

“The lack of seagrass within the lagoon is a grave concern for the well-being of manatees, so we were eager to present this data documenting the diet of manatees before and after periods of seagrass decline,” Allen says.

【1】What possibly leads to the manatees’ death?

A.The change of their main food.

B.The loss of their living space.

C.The polluted water in the lagoon.

    D.The disappearance of seagrass.

【2】What methods did the researchers carry out their research?

    A.By experimenting with some manatees.

B.By comparing the data kept for ten years.

C.By interviewing fishermen near the lagoon.

D.By analyzing the water’s change in the lagoon.

【3】What’s Allen’s attitude to the future of manatees?

    A.Positive.

    B.Unconcerned.

    C.Objective.

    D.Worried.

【4】In which section can we read this text in a newspaper?

    A.Sports.

    B.Health.

    C.Nature.

    D.Education.

  • 24、Birds have been observed to sleep while in flight for the first time ever. Because of some flights that can often last several days, weeks, or even longer, some sea birds have long been thought of being able to fall fully asleep while “on the wing”, though it was not proven.

Now researchers say they have evidence which shows birds can sleep in flight. Scientists from Max Planck Institute used a sample of 15 adult female frigate birds (军舰鸟) to test the sleep patterns. Each bird had a small electroencephalogram (EEG脑电图) sensor fitted to record changes in the animals’ brain activity as they flew for up to 10 days and over 3,000 kilometres.

The readings showed that during flight the birds could sleep using one hemisphere of the brain, or both together. It was known that frigate birds could sleep with one “half” of the brain, which allows them to keep one eye open and “connected” to the awake half.

According to the research, it is sleeping technique used by birds for finding directions. “Frigatebirds sleep mostly while circling in rising air and keep the eye connected to the awake hemisphere facing the direction of flight, suggesting that they watch where they are going,” says the study.

Despite the ability to fall “fully” asleep, the birds were found to do it less in the air compared to one land. They slept “very little and less deeply while in flight. This suggests that though it is possible, falling totally asleep is not very good during flight which will need the bird’s attention.

The researchers said the short sleep could be serving as “power naps” to keep the birds going until they return to land. Further study could help us understand why lack of sleep affects humans so badly.

1The phrase “on the wing” in the first paragraph may mean __________.

    A. flying.   B. fighting.

    C. sleeping.   D. thinking.

2How do the sleeping birds find the directions?

    A. They sleep less when they are circling in rising air.

    B. They keep one eye connected to the awake part.

    C. They pay special attention to the way.

    D. They have a good sleep before they start flying.

3What is the best title of the text?

    A. A Study on Birds in Flight   B. Flying Birds’ Brain Activity

    C. Birds Can Sleep in Flight   D. Sleep With Half of the Brain
