  • 21、Alex Elman runs a big business—something hard to imagine after she lost her sight in her twenties. But Elman says that losing her sight helped her focus on finding success.

Elman’s father planted a hillside vineyard in western Massachusetts in 1981. It’s where Elman fled during the darkest period of her life. When she was 27 years old, she went blind due to complications from Juvenile diabetes (青少年糖尿病) 17 years ago. She recalled, “I hid in my home. I hid in the place, to me, that was the safest place in the world.”

Elman is now the founder of Alex Elman Wines, a growing collection of organic wines from all around the world: Chianti from Italy, Torrontes from Argentina. Elman doesn’t work alone. Her assistant, a guide dog named Hanley, is something of a wine taster, and quite a beggar. Hanley travels to all of the wineries that Elman does, from South America to Europe.

At first, Elman resisted the idea of a seeing-eye dog. Now it’s hard to imagine her life, or her business, without him. She said, “When someone tells me something is organic and I don’t really believe it because I taste something funny on it, I’ll put it in front of his face and if he likes the wine, he’ll actually go in and sniff it. If it’s not right, he’ll turn his head away ... He gets in the dirt with me. He scratches around. He makes sure that we see earthworms and butterflies. That’s how we know that the soil is actually organic and there are no chemicals.”

Elman told CBS News she believes the loss of her vision was a gift. She said, “It allowed me to pay attention to what I thought was important and also to be able to teach people that the broken hang nail is not a big deal, you know what I mean? Don’t sweat the small stuff. Don’t sweat the big stuff either.”

【1】What can we know about Elman from paragraph 2?

    Orphans of the Sky

  • 23、London used to be “foggy” 有雾的 for the same reason that cities like Beijing or Chongqing are “foggy” today. The “fog” was in fact smog烟雾, a mixture of smoke and fog.In other words, it was made by air pollution. In London, some of this pollution came from factories, but much of it came from the coal(煤)that people burnt in their houses to keep warm during the winter. By the 1950s, London’s smog problem had become so bad that the government decided to do something to clean the air. A new law was made and nobody could burn coal in any British city. Within a few years, the air became much cleaner. There were no more “pea-soupers”.

Many Chinese cities now face the same sort of problem with air pollution that London faced 40 or 50 years ago. However, this problem is more difficult for Chinese cities to solve. One reason is that more of the pollution comes from the factories, rather than from coal burnt in people’s houses. If these factories were closed, this would harm the economy and lots of people would lose their jobs. Another reason is that changing from coal to cleaner fuel(燃料), like gas, is quite expensive.

However, the air in many Chinese cities is becoming cleaner and cleaner, as the government and people pay more and more attention to cutting down pollution. As a result, there are fewer “pea-soupers” in Beijing than there used to be.

【1】What was the main reason for air pollution in London?

A.There was too much smoke in the sky.

B.There were too many factories in the city.

C.People burnt too much coal in the houses.

【2】How did the air in London become much cleaner?

A.There was not so much fog in the winter later.

B.A law was made to keep people from burning coal in their houses.

C.Many factories in the city were closed.

【3】What does the underlined work “pea-soupers” refer to?

    A.Smog. B.Smoke.   C.Gas.

【4】The problem of air pollution is more difficult for Chinese cities to solve because of _____reasons

    A.one   B.two C.three

    【5】Which sentence is Not true?

A.Using coal is much more expensive than using gas.

B.Factories made much more pollution in China.

C.The reasons of air pollution in London and Beijing are different.

  • 24、Like most foreigners from English-speaking countries, Holt’s first job in China was teaching English in training centers and middle schools. Since November, 2021, he has been a teacher at New Channel, a Beijing-based language training institute. “I teach them theater,” he said.

Holt was very shy as a kid. In the first grade, he was invited to “star” in Romeo and Juliet. He declined. But his teacher insisted on giving him the biggest part. “He gave me the power to empower(给予力量) myself,” Holt explained. He intended to pass on that same feeling. So he studied theater and education at the Evergreen State College in the US, and then went to Asia, first the Republic of Korea, then China.

“Teaching theater and public speaking in China is wonderful,” he said. Training aside, he and his colleagues also adapt Chinese stories, like The Monkey King, into English screenplays for students. “Children literally want to be as dramatic as possible instead of just reciting words,” he said.

But teaching is not all it’s cracked up to be. “The biggest challenge is to get the introverted (内向的) kids—or adults—to speak up,” Holt added. Making the shyest kid the director is one of his methods to build them up. And the change with them is noticeable: students who’d barely utter a word before end up being the loudest person in the room. “I love to see that turnaround,” Holt said.

His future plan is to get as many children as possible to feel more empowered, and “make theater a little bridge” between China and other countries.

Art makes for a universal conversation start. Despite disagreements among different countries, people from different countries can get along well through art. “I think it’s a really powerful thing that we can all share,” he said.

【1】How did Holt react when invited to “star” in Romeo and Juliet?

A.He didn’t show interest in the least.

B.He joined in without any hesitation.

C.He wondered if he could play the role.

D.He turned it down owing to shyness.

【2】Which of the following does Holt want to convey about theatre?

A.It can remove all barriers between cultures.

B.It can give shy children power to speak up.

C.It can help children overcome any challenge.

D.It can change conventional teaching methods.

【3】What does the underlined phrase in the last paragraph mean?

    A.Makes up.

    B.Takes over.

    C.Results in.

    D.Breaks down.

【4】What can be a suitable title for the passage?

    A.Art builds a cultural bridge.

B.Theater is to be a trend in teaching.

C.Art appeals to kids in China.

D.Theater will make all kids love art.

  • 25、I was a boy of nine in 1960. I used to mow the lawn for Mrs. Long. She paid me little for the job, but promised to give me a Christmas present.

I spent much time _________ what it would be. Many boys had baseball gloves or ice skates and I was eager to have any of these. “It would _________ be a baseball glove,” I _________ with myself. “She wouldn’t know much about baseball.” So I was convinced that she would give me ice skates. I even imagined myself upon the skates.

As Christmas approached, it was with _________ that I stopped myself from reporting to Mrs. Long and demanding my present. On December 22, I presented myself at the door of the house. Mrs. Long handed me a small box which under no circumstances could _________ a pair of skates. I was disappointed. When lifting it from her, I was curious about the _________ of the present. It weighed almost nothing.

    “What is it?” I asked.

“A kind of magic,” she said. Her words were enough to set my mind _________ with new possibilities.

On Christmas morning, I had this box on my knees. With great _________ I opened the box to find inside ten sheets of black paper, each labeled in colorful letters, Carbon Paper Regal Premium. “What is it?” I asked. Mum took two pieces of white paper, placed between them one of the black paper, and wrote my name on the upper sheet. Then she handed me the second sheet, which her pencil had in no way touched. There was my name!

It was a miracle to my _________ mind. In that one moment, I remembered the ideas about the duplication(复制) of words and the printing and the mystery of spreading ideas. 四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

It was in 1959, one week before my 10th birthday, my mother announced we were taking a trip to Niagara Falls when summer vacation started. Reservations had been made for a hotel and a Maid of the Mist Boat Tour trip. It all sounded incredibly good until Mom said we would drive to Canada.

Driving in the car meant I’d share the back seat with my 3-year-old sister. “Sitting in the back seat all day is dull,” I thought.

“Hey, can we take a plane there instead?” I asked between mouthfuls of hamburger and French fries.

“Sorry, honey, maybe next time,” my mother replied as she and my father exchanged glances.

“Dad, how long a ride is it to Canada?”

    “It’s about nine hours, pal.”

This was an excellent chance to get one parent on my side. “That’s not fair to you, Dad. You’ll be too tired to have fun after driving so much.” I crossed my fingers. “Then you’ll have to drive all the way home too! Being on a plane would be very relaxing for you because you won’t be driving so much.”

My father smiled and patted my back. “Thanks for being so concerned, but I’ll be fine. No need to worry.” Then he looked at my mother and winked.

Parents can be so frustrating. Didn’t they get it? I’m in desperate need of a plane ride, and I need something cool to talk about with my friends when we get home. I lost control. “Sitting in the back seat of the car sucks,” I blurted out, then rapidly covered my mouth with a hand to prevent any other forbidden words from escaping.

“Jay!” My mother shouted. “Watch your mouth!”

“I don’t want to hear that type of language again,” my father said, slapping the table angrily.

“Ok, sorry, but I really wanted to go by plane.”

“This conversation’s over.” My father said. “If you have finished eating, go to your room.”

On Saturday morning, We loaded all our luggage into the car.

    注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
