二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Three years ago when I was still in the University, I also worked at a restaurant.

An old man named Mr. Candido Filio was one of our regular customer at the restaurant. He was one of the most intelligent people I've ever known.

Every Sunday the Philippine Star Newspaper had a special page for word puzzles and among his peers (同龄人), Mr.Filio held the record for solving all the puzzles in less than five minutes. He encouraged me to solve them too, and for months and months, I did my best to beat him but failed.

Then one Sunday, I did it! I was able to complete them before anyone else. Everyone cheered for me. He came up to me with a smile and said,  " No one has ever beaten me before. You are the first. I'll have a prize for you tomorrow."

The next day, he gave me a special Scrabble(拼字游戏)set. I would have never been able to afford one like that by myself. Then he said to me,  " Kate, what do you think is man's final goal in life? Happiness, isn't it? You are happy and that should be considered as a success. Many people spend a lifetime searching for that. Be thankful that you have found it." I looked at him and knew that my life had changed, probably forever. He must have known that I always felt sad about not having much money.

He encouraged me to learn the game and love words. And true to his words, I was never able to beat him again.

【1We can learn from the text that Mr.Filio _

    A. was generous to young people

    B. was good at word puzzles

    C. lived quite near the restaurant

    D. won a prize from the Philippine Star Newspaper

【2The author was given a gift because________.

    B. Mr. Filio was satisfied with her service

    C. she was the first person to beat Mr.Filio

    D. she was the new record keeper in the restaurant

【3After she heard what Mr. Filio said, the author probably felt

    A. amazed     B. excited

    C. touched   D. inspired

  • 22、Cell phone use and texting are increasingly common, especially among teens. And that could be a problem. Texting affects learning and performing on test, a new study finds. So a Montana teen, Colin decided to test that.

They asked 47 classmates to take part in a two-part experiment. The goal was to test how well these students understood written material. Each one had to read a paragraph or two about a certain topic, then answer questions about it.

In the first part, the participants had 15 minutes to understand and then answer questions about six readings. Throughout this test, they met no distractions.

During a new set of readings, the brothers sent messages to the participants’ cell phones every 90 seconds. In each message, there were questions that required a reply.

Participants should have scored better on the second test because it was easier. In fact, they scored worse when distracted by messages. Only a few students scored as well when replying to messages as they did when undistracted. But importantly, nobody performed better during the texting part.

The brothers presented details of their findings at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair. Boys and girls scored equally poorly while texting, the brothers noticed. Older participants didn’t do any better than younger ones. And it didn’t matter if a student thought he was good at multitasking. On average, the brothers found that even students who were confident of their abilities did just as poorly while texting. Surprisingly, even though the students remembered less of what they read while texting, most of them answered questions in messages perfectly.

“Our teachers are very happy to see these results,” says Coler. The teens’ new data strongly support their teachers’ opinion that texting while studying is a serious distraction.

【1】 What did Colter and Colin want to test?

    A. Cell phone use and texting are more common.

    B. Teens should avoid cell phone use and texting.

    C. Texting affects students’ performance on test.

    D. The effect of texting differs from person to person.

【2】What can we learn from the two-part experiment?

    A. The written material in the two parts was the same.

    B. Participants in part 2 received more than one message.

    C. The time of the test in two parts was the same.

    D. All the participants were distracted by messages.

【3】The brothers’ findings were related to participants’ ________.

    A. reading performance  B. quality

    C. writing ability D. reading speed

【4】 From the results of the experiment, we can find _________.

    A. boys were better at multitasking than girls

    B. the easier the tests were, the more mistakes were made

    C. nobody did good jobs in the two-part experiment

    D. some students’ test results were not affected by texting

【5】What’s Colter’s teachers’ attitude toward the results?

    A. Surprised.   B. Worried.

    C. Satisfied.   D. Serious.

  • 23、   Experts agree that parents who give up control over their children’s lives would raise them to be more independent adults. While the vast majority of parents are not in the position to bribe their children into elite(精英) schools, this extreme case illustrates the temptation many feel to take control of their kids’ lives. But an extreme hands-on approach can have devastating (毁灭性的) consequences when it comes to a child’s mental health.

“These parents thought their kids were incapable of managing their lives by themselves. And I don’t think there’s any worse message you can give somebody than ‘I don’t have any confidence in your ability to handle your own life,’” the clinical neuropsychologist Willam Stixrud told HuffPost. Stixrud is the author of The Self-driven Child: The Science and Sense of Giving Your Kids More Control Over Their Lives, along with Ned Johnson.

In their research, Stixrud and Johnson have identified the importance for young people to feel a sense of control over their own lives. “We have this epidemic(流行病) of stress-related problems like anxiety and depression, and so many of those are related to the fact that kids feel so little control over their lives,” said Stixrud. “They feel like, ‘Here’s a script to get into college, and that’s what your life is going to be.’ It’s incredibly stressful and discouraging for many kids.” In order to develop healthy self-motivation, young people need to feel a sense of agency and autonomy, which parents and educators have the power to promote.

“We suggest parents think of themselves as consultants, rather than a kid’s manager or boss, or the homework police. It’s a very different kind of thinking about your role”, said Stixrud, “As a consultant, your role is not to force anything or say ‘You need to be like this’. Instead, help your kid understand what he or she wants to be.” He advises parents to encourage their kids to make their own decisions long before the college years. It’s important to constantly ask, “Whose life is this?” and realize the answer is “My child’s life, not mine.”

1What does the writer think of the extreme hands-on approach in parenting?

A.It’s good for parents to control children better.

B.It can raise children to be independent ones.

C.It’s harmful to children’s mental health.

D.It can help children to be admitted into better schools.

2What does the underlined word “bribe” in Paragraph 1 mean?

    A.persuade B.translate C.throw D.shock

3In the last paragraph, the author intends to_________.

A.summarize the previous paragraphs B.add some background information

C.provide some advice for parents D.introduce a new topic for discussion

4Which could be the best title for the text?

A.How to Be Your Children’s Friend

B.Be Your Children’s Consultant Instead of Manager

    C.Accompany Your Children Growing Up

D.How to Help Your Children Adjust to College Life

  • 24、

One day in l965, when I worked at View Ridge School in Seattle, a fourth-grade teacher approached me. She had a student who finished his work before all the others and needed a challenge. "Could he help in the library?" She asked. I said, "Send him along."

Soon a slight, sandy-haired boy in jeans and a T-shift appeared. "Do you have a job for me?" he asked.

I told him about the Dewey Decimal System for shelving books. He picked up the idea immediately. Then I showed him a stack of cards for long-overdue books that I was beginning to think had actually been returned but were miss helved with the wrong cards in them. He said, "Is it kind of a detective job?" I answered yes, and he became working.

He had found three books with wrong cards by the time his teacher opened the door and announced, "Time for break!" He argued for finishing the finding job; She made the case for fresh air. She won.

The next morning, he arrived early. "I want to finish these books," he said. At the end of the day, when he asked to be a librarian on a regular basis, it was easy to say yes. He worked untiringly.

After a few weeks I found a note on my desk, inviting me to dinner at the boy's home. At the end of a pleasant evening, his mother announced that the family would be moving to neighbouring school district. Her son's first concern, she said, was leaving the View Ridge library. "Who will find the lost books?" he asked.

When the time came, I said a reluctant good-bye. I missed him, but not for long. A few days later he came back and joyfully announced: "The librarian over there doesn't let boys work in the library. My mother got me transferred back to View Ridge. My dad will drop me off on his way to work. And if he can't, I'll walk!"

I should have had an inkling(感觉) such focused determination would take that young man wherever he wanted to go. What I could not have guessed, however, was that he would become a wizard of the Information Age: Bill Gates, tycoon of Microsoft and America's richest man.

1What was the author when the story happened?

    A. A teacher.   B. A librarian.   C. A detective.   D. A professor.

2What was the boy told to do on his first day in the library?

    B. To put those overdue books back to the shelves.

    C. To find out the books with wrong cards in them.

    D. To put the cards back in the long-overdue books.

3The boy got transferred back to View Ridge because _______.

    A. he did not like his life in the new school

    B. the transportation there was not convenient

    C. he missed his old schoolmates and teachers

    D. he was not allowed to work in the school library

    D. had a kind heart
