21、The government in China plans to end its one-child per family policy and instead let families have two children.
The plan was announced Thursday after high-level political meetings in Beijing. The official Xinhua news agency says the country’s top legislature must approve the proposal before it becomes law.
A Chinese Communist Party statement gave a number of reasons for the change in policy. The statement said the change is meant to balance population development. It said the move also attempts to stop a declining birth rate and strengthen the country’s work force.
China, the world's most populous country, launched the one-child policy in 1980. But the government permitted only a small number of couples to have two children. For example, some rural families were given approval to have two children. A total of 19 rural provinces have a partial two-child policy. That policy states if the first-born is a girl, a second child is permitted.
In 2013, the Chinese government gave other couples a chance to have two children. Families could have two if one parent was an only child.
A teacher and population expert, Jiang Quanbao, explained how Chinese families will react to the policy. “Too many young people in the cities are probably no longer interested in having a second child,”he said. “People in rural farming villages may be more interested. But again, some of them are already allowed to have two children.”
At the end of 2014, China had a population of 1.37 billion people. A total of 800 million of them are employed. But that job market population is expected to drop by 2050. With the two-child policy, an increase in births will ease the labor shortage, starting in 20 years.

22、Beyond Identity
We often think of ourselves as our body, mind, and emotions. However, we also often talk about a person’s soul. Is there any scientific basis for the soul? Surprisingly, there is. Each unique personality a person has, the feeling and identity of the self beyond age, and our inevitable subjective experience as an individual make a scientific foundation for the soul.
Despite the constant change in the links between our brain cells, we remain the same personality. This is most obvious in the case of mentally ill patients or people who have experienced memory loss. Science journalist Michael Lemonick told the story of Lonni Sue, who suffered brain damage and was left unable to recall her past or to form new memories. Lemonick thought that Lonni Sue, when she lost her memories, lost her self. But once he got to know her, as well as people who knew her before and after her injury, Lemonick discovered that herself had not been destroyed. She was still cheerful in a way that made people around her feel better, and she was still creative and playful. So, despite memory loss, we still have the essence of our personality. Basically, no matter what happens to our brain, our unique personality seems to shine through.
Besides one’s personality being present despite memory loss, the soul of a person can be identified through one’s consciousness. Though we commonly identify with our body and what we see in the mirror, we also have a sense that we are not a certain age—as our sense of self usually depends less on age and rather on our subjective feeling of who we are.
Lastly, each person is inevitably subjective about his or her experience. Despite humans being very similar to each other in DNA, our view on reality is very different from individual to individual.
The soul of a person is challenging to prove scientifically. However, with each person’s personality being unique, the behavioral quality of thinking of the self beyond age, and our inevitable subjective experience, we can say that the soul has some basis in science. These realities of our behavior, character, and perception might not be tested, but they are very difficult to deny.
【1】The author tells the story of Lonni Sue to show ________.
A.the stability of people’s personality
B.strange behaviors of mentally ill patients
C.the chance for the mentally ill to form new memories
D.the changes of the people who suffered brain damage
【2】What does the underlined word “essence” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?

B.The soul of a person changes as he or she grows old.

D.Our soul depends on our personality, consciousness and experience.
23、 For many, college is a means to a good job. For Hollywood stars, college is an opportunity to be like everyone else.
Jodie Foster
By age 14, she had appeared in two dozen television series and 10 feature films, including Taxi Driver. Yet, she stepped away from the film business at the height of her career to attend Yale University. It paid off Foster graduated in 1985 with a degree in literature, and she was later awarded a degree in fine arts. Her career didn’t suffer, either. She went on to win two Oscars, for The Accused and The Silence of the lambs, and to direct several films.
Jerry O’Connell

24、The Internet of Things (IoT) aims to get everything and everyone talking. Attaching sensors to “things”, such as cows, cars and refrigerator, and then assigning them unique IP addresses allow them to “talk” to the Internet. Of course, the IoT will involve much more than a handful of sensors. Networking company Cisco estimates that 50 billion Internet-connected devices and objects will
be sending over data by 2020.
Specific Benefits The IoT will allow people to track things and processes like never before. Airplane manufacturers will be able to continuously track the condition of airplane parts, allowing them to do preventive maintenance and avoid costly downtime. Consumers could install smart meters in their homes to monitor energy usage and observe energy price changes in real time. That would allow people to adjust their habits and use electrical appliances during lower-priced hours.
|
Some Fears Some critics fear that the IoT could end up being a fashion that people lose interest in over time. Having Twitter feeds on refrigerator doors may sound cool at first, but the attraction could fade as quickly as the excitement over last year’s smartphone! Other critics are doubtful that companies making Internet-connected appliances will provide long-term software updates. If that happens, a refrigerator or washing machine that should last 10 years or more could last two or three due to software that’s outdated.
|
A Positive Example Early this year, owners of the Tesla Model S electric car received a recall notice alerting them to a charger plug needing to be fixed. Amazingly, owners of the Model S sat back while the company performed an “over the air” wireless update. Customers confirmed the update by tapping on the car’s touchscreen console to see that the Model S was running the latest software version. No trip to the dealer was required! Perhaps Tesla’s remote fix is a sign of things to come. Someday soon, people’s lives might become a lot more efficient and convenient thanks to the IoT.
|
【1】How do researchers get everything and everyone talking?
A. By establishing the IoT and launching a handful of sensors.
B. By connecting sensors with them and appointing them unique IP addresses.
C. By communicating with them all the time through the IoT.
D. By sending people to track them day and night and collect useful data.
【2】According to the article, which of the following is NOT TRUE?
A. IoT can help people do preventive maintenance and save money.
B. IoT can help people monitor energy usage and observe price changes timely.
C. IoT can help people adjust their habits and use electrical appliances more smartly.
D. IoT can help people investigate things and update a lot of important data.
【3】What else do critics worry about the IoT besides its probably ending up being a fashion?
A. People will lose interest in it as quickly as the thrill over last year’s smartphone.
B. Refrigerators and washing machines will be replaced by other devices in a few years.
C. Whether related companies will provide long-term software updates or not.
D. The software provided by companies will be outdated easily and quickly.
【4】According to the passage, when owners of the Tesla Model S electric received a recall notice, they ______.
A. just waited in the car while the maintenance is being done through wireless update
B. were required to go to the nearest 4s store to make some adjustments or repairs
C. could definitely depend on the IoT to send them the charger plug to be fixed
D. had to confirm the update with the help of the equipment provided by the company
