21、As the country’s first large-scale serial documentary shot in 8K ultrahigh-definition. The Forbidden City, a 12-episode documentary, has recently run on Beijing Satellite TV, which is in part as a celebration of the 601st anniversary of the founding of the imperial (帝王的) palace during the Ming and Qing dynasties (1368—1911).
The documentary gathered 12 first-class singers to respectively render (演唱) theme songs for each episode, creatively interpreting milestone historical chapters with meaningful music.
Wu Zhiyong, the chief producer and chief director, recalled that he visited the Forbidden City for the first time when he was a youngster, feeling it a pity upon discovering that the guide he followed offered a flawed introduction to the site.
“Since then I had wished for many years that I could make a documentary to retell the real history of the Forbidden City in detail. Luckily with the Palace Museum’s support, our crew managed to learn a lot of knowledge, interviewing many historians and shooting the most beautiful, tranquil moments of the imperial palace.” said Wu.
The crew, consisting of nearly 150 people, had spent around three years to conduct investigations, polishing the script with the help of more than 30 experts from multiple departments of the Palace Museum, covering a wide range of areas including ancient architecture, drawing and calligraphy, court wares and royal history.
Aside from the Forbidden City, the crew made up of three camera teams to simultaneously work on different sites also traveled to dozens of cities, such as Nanjing and Suzhou in Jiangsu province as well as Fuzhou, Xiamen and Quanzhou in Fujian province, to obtain more content about Chinese history related to the stories happening inside the great palace.

22、Alejandro Buxton’s candle business started with a headache. The 12-year-old’s mom suffers from allergies, and something in their house was causing her head to hurt. After going to the hospital, they discovered the cause of the headache: the candles. His mom had no choice but to get rid of the scented (有香味的) items.
However, he knew his mother really loved candles. To lift her spirits, he set up a lab in the family’s kitchen in the fall of 2019 and made a candle using only natural ingredients, such as soy and coconut waxes (蜡) and essential oils. Chemicals in her old candles were causing the headaches. He named his first product Jurassic Orange, which is similar to the fruit in color and smell. Jurassic Orange was a hit with his mom, whose headaches disappeared. But Alejandro wasn’t done experimenting. Within a few months, he had about six scents, including Chunky Sweaters and Cozy Socks, which smells like a fruit drink mixed with a pine forest.
In September 2020, he put his first collection of candles on Etsy, the online marketplace that specializes in handmade goods. He also sold candles at seasonal markets, such as the one in downtown D. C. where the vice president was shopping for holiday gifts last year. He recommended two candles to the vice president. She took some of his advice.
Jesse Benites, general manager of a big shopping mall, said the vice president’s visit “skyrocketed” Alejandro’s fame. A senior manager contacted Alejandro and invited him to rent one of the 12 retail carts at the mall. On September 1,2022, Smell of Love Candles opened on the second level of the shopping center. Alejandro is the mall’s youngest business owner. Inside the mall, Alejandro turned a large room into his production facility, where he and his staff make 600 to 700 candles a week. There were altogether 25 scents on the shelf. He continued to make new scents and wanted to see all his candles in every single household and love and joy come into the houses.
Alejandro’s candle business makes a good profit, but for him, the money he earned is not just for his own college fund but for local charities.

23、 Jim McGee was once an Air Force pilot in Vietnam. In 2017, he was seriously ill because his kidneys(肾)were gone.
Jim immediately started dialysis (透析), but a person of his age on dialysis usually lives only about four years. Transplants are a long-shot alternative. The National Kidney Foundation estimates that 13 people die every day while waiting for a donor with the right blood and tissue types. Jim’ s wife, Shirley McGee, and some family friends offered but weren’t a match.
Desperate, Shirley had T-shirts made that said “I’ m in need of a donor.” Her husband would wear one whenever he went to downtown Sarasota. No luck.
In early 2018, Jim didn’t feel like attending a reunion of some Air Force buddies in Monterey, California. “I said, ‘Is it really worth going to Monterey to sit in dialysis for two days?’” Jim recalls. “And my wife said, ‘ Yeah, come on. You really want to see your friends. ’ And I am glad I made that decision.”
In California, Jim reunited with six fellow airmen, including one he hadn’ t seen in nearly 50 years: Doug Coffman. The two had met when they both were learning Vietnamese before they went overseas. Jim told Doug and his other comrades about his predicament(困境),
Doug, then 70, happened to have the right blood type and immediately decided to help.
But could he? Shirley’ s guess was that doctors would tell Doug what they had told her: You’re too old.
He immediately had his doctor send his medical records to Georgetown Medical Center, where Jim was being treated.
Within a month, Doug was cleared for major testing. The testing revealed not only that Doug’ s tissue type matched Jim’ s but also that he had the kidneys of a 35-year-old.
When the doctors gave him the OK to donate, Doug immediately called Jim, and asked for the first surgery date available. On September 18, 2018, Doug went into surgery at 7: 30 a. m.; Jim followed at 9: 30 a.m. By noon, they were both in the recovery room. The transplant was a success.

24、The brain of a woodpecker(啄木鸟)experiences a seemingly disastrous impact every time its beak(喙)meets wood.“When you see these birds with hard beaks, flexible tongues and strong neck muscles in action, hitting their head against a tree quite violently, then as humans we start wondering how these birds avoid getting headaches or brain damage,” says Van Wassenbergh, a researcher at the University of Antwerp in Belgium.
In the past, scientists have suggested the bird’s brain is protected from the impacts, perhaps by a skull(头骨)that acts as a cushion(缓冲物). But Van Wassenbergh wasn’t convinced. So he led a team that set out to settle the issue using high-speed videos of woodpeckers in action.
“We went to four different zoos in Europe where they had woodpeckers and we recorded them at very high frame rates, while they were pecking,” he says.
Although earlier studies have discovered a number of fascinating facts, one of which is that pecking repeatedly can be used by birds to find a mate, the videos revealed some new surprising details. For example, “they close their eyes at the moment they impact the wood,” Van Wassenbergh says, to protect their eyes from pieces of wood. The videos also showed that woodpeckers’ beaks often get stuck in the wood. But they break free almost instantly, thanks to a clever beak design that provides independent motion of the upper and lower beak.
“By analyzing high-speed videos of three species of woodpeckers, we found that woodpeckers do not absorb the shock of the impacts when pecking,” says Van Wassenbergh.
That means the organ repeatedly experiences impacts that would cause an injury in a human brain. Yet the woodpecker brain is unscathed, even after thousands of impacts in a single day. That is possible because a woodpecker’s brain is protected—not by cushioning, but by its tiny size and weight, Van Wassenbergh says.
“An animal that has a smaller size can resist higher-speed impacts,” he says. “That’s a biomechanical law.” Now, it has been confirmed by Van Wassenbergh’s high-speed videos.
