21、When you put down your pens at the end of the college entrance exam, 12 hard years of study will have come to an end. Forget your studies for a while. It’s time to enjoy yourselves!
There are many ways to celebrate this special month of graduation. You can have photos taken with your classmates and teachers, or dine out together and exchange gifts.
High school students in Western countries such as the United States and Canada usually have a prom to mark their graduation. It’s to mark the time kids turn into young men and women. After the prom, teenagers either go to college or find a job. It means they are no longer as dependent on their parents as they were before.
At the prom, boys usually dress in dinner jackets and bow ties, though many different types of formal clothes are worn. Traditionally, girls give boys matching boutonnieres (a small collection of flowers they pin to their jackets). Girls traditionally wear formal dresses, or dress to shock or be noticed, in shiny or brightly colored materials.
Common prom activities include dining, dancing, the crowning (加冠) of a prom king and queen, and just talking to friends. In some cases, high school students collect funds for their class prom through the four years of their high school.
High schools in or near large cities may rent ballrooms at expensive hotels or, to be unusual, on a pleasure cruise boat.
But often costs are cut by simply using the school gym. Students make a lot of effort to decorate the gym to make the event special. The music played at the prom will be the most popular kinds, like rock and hip-hop.
The students elect the Prom Queen. She is partnered with a Prom King who is elected similarly. These are great honors that the pair take very seriously. The two dance with each other to celebrate their election.
Sometimes teachers and parents also go to the prom. But others like to go with friends, to whom they are soon going to be saying goodbye.
If you like the idea of a prom, why don’t you and your classmates organize one for your graduation?

22、The 115m Christmas Bird Count is officially underway. The count is an annual investigation of local and migratory(迁徙的)birds and it's organized by the National Audubon Society. From December 14 to January 5, volunteers will gather in more than 2,000 locations in North, Central and South America to count the birds in their area.
Each count takes place in a circle about 24 kilometers wide. The volunteers follow specific routes within the circle and record the number of individual birds and the different species they see there in a single day. The results are sent to the National Audubon Society and later published on Audubon's Christmas Bird Count website. The data collected during the bird count is a key source Of information for ornithologists, scientists who study birds.
This information is used to develop conservation programs to protect bird habitats and the environment /n general. Data from the bird count was also used to determine that three species-the Western screech owl, the rusty blackbird and the Newfoundland red crossbill - should be added to Canada's list of species at risk.
The annual bird count was created to protest another Christmas tradition at the very beginning .in the United States in the 19th century, people would often hold "side hunts" on Christmas Day.
Teams of hunters would compete to see who could kill the most birds or other animals that day. In December 1900, Frank Chapman, an American ornithologist, suggested that instead of hunting birds, people should count them.
Twenty-seven people in 25 locations joined in the first Christmas bird count Last year, more than 70,000 volunteers took part. This year, counts are scheduled to take place in 17 countries, ranging from the Arctic to the Antarctic, with most located in Canada and the United States .instead of taking place only on Christmas day, counts are now held on different days for different areas.

23、In spring 2016,Liza Goldberg asked scientists at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center if she could do research there. There was a problem, though. She was just 14 years old, and NASA's internship(实习) program only accepts students starting at age 16.
David Lagomasino and Temilola Fatoyinbo are NASA satellite experts. They saw Liza’s request. In it,she talked about how she had studied trees in her own backyard to learn about climate change. The two NASA scientists were impressed. “This girl sounds great,’’ Lagomasino remembers saying. “Let’s bring her in.” They made a special role for her outside the internship program.
Lagomasino and Fatoyinbo thought Liza could help them use satellite data to map mangroves(红树林), a small tree that grows in muddy forests on the coastlines of many tropical(热带的) countries. Mangroves are very important as they store huge amounts of carbon, which makes them helpful for fighting global warming. They are also home to fish that millions of people depend on for food.
Less than two years later, Liza has developed what might be the world’s first satellite-based system to determine where mangroves are in trouble. The work uses data from four satellites. It covers mangrove growth and loss, rainfall, agriculture and city growth.
Lagomasino and Fatoyinbo brought Liza in during the summer before she started high school. The teen had seen mangroves only once before, during a trip to Fort Myers, Florida. Soon, she would see many more,at least on her computer screen.
Liza learned that half of the world's mangroves had disappeared. She was shocked and motivated to do something. I wanted to create some kind of solution, she said. She would even work during school breaks or at home on her projects. Liza's hard work is starting to pay off. Already, environmental groups are eager to use her system to make their work more effective.
Now that she has turned 16,Liza has finally joined NASA's official internship program.
【1】Why was Liza outside the internship program at first?
A.She knew little about global warming.
B.She didn't show her talent properly.
C.She didn't meet the required age.
D.She lacked the experience of data-collecting.
【2】Why are mangroves so important?
A.They are food for fish.
B.They keep a balanced ecosystem.
C.They forecast climate change.
D.They are commercial crops.
【3】What does the underlined word “It” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A.The data.
B.The satellite.

D.It is fruitful.
24、Teaching artificial intelligence to understand simple physics concepts, such as that one solid object can’t occupy the same space as another, could lead to more capable software that takes less computational resources to train, say researchers at Deep Mind.
Now,Luis Piloto at Deep Mind and his colleagues have created an AI called Physics Learning through Auto-encoding and Tracking Objects (PLATO) that is designed to understand that the physical world is composed of objects that follow basic physical laws.
The researchers trained PLATO to identify objects and their interactions by using simulated(模拟的)videos of objects moving as we would expect, such as balls falling to the ground, rolling behind each other and bouncing off each other. They also gave PLATO data showing which pixels(像素)in every frame or photo belonged to each object. To test PLATO’s ability to understand five physical concepts, such as solidity, persistence (that an object doesn’t tend to vanish) and unchangingness (that an object tends to retain features like shape and colour), the researchers used another series of simulated videos. Some showed objects obeying the laws of physics, while others depicted ridiculous actions. They tasked PLATO to predict what would happen next in each video, and found that its predictions were reliably wrong for nonsensical videos, but usually correct for logical ones, suggesting the Al has an intuitive(直觉的)knowledge of physics.
Piloto says the results show that an eccentric view of the world could give an Al a more generalized and adaptable set of abilities.“If you consider, for instance, all the different scenes that an apple might be in,”he says.“You don’t have to learn about an apple on a tree, versus an apple in your kitchen, versus an apple in the garbage. When you kind of separate the apple as its own thing, you’re in a better position to generalize how it behaves in new systems,in new contexts. It provides learning efficiency.”
“This is somewhat like teaching a kid what a car is by first teaching them what wheels and seats are,”Chen Feng at New York University says.“The benefit of using object centric representation, instead of raw visual inputs, makes Al learn intuitive physical concepts with better data efficiency.”
【1】Why was PLATO created?
A.To help AI process more data.
B.To teach AI researchers how to use simple physics knowledge.
C.To enable AI to comprehend simple physics concepts.
D.To have objects follow basic physical laws.
【2】What does the third paragraph mainly talk about?
