Their lives have been transformed by pneumonia (肺炎) caused by the new coronavirus (冠状病毒).

The first interviewee was Tian Fuxin from Wuhan. He was admitted to hospital on January 20 and discharged from hospital on January 30 after 10 days of isolation treatment.

After growing up, I think I’ve never said that. You must hold on. I can’t live without you, Dad.” “Don’t be pessimistic. Little psychological tricks are helpful. You have to tell yourself I am feeling better.”

  • 23、   What do you do with old stuff? That dress you bought for a party three years ago, for example. You wore it once and put it away somewhere. So, what to do?

In the UK, we might take it to a charity shop. The first charity shops appeared in Britain in the 19th century. The Salvation Army was one of the first to run a second-hand clothing shop to provide the needy with affordable clothes. This was followed by charities such as the British Red Cross, who also relieved hardship and raised money for the war effort during World War Two. In 1947, Oxfam opened a charity shop in High Street, Oxford, which is the modem form we know today. These days, charily shops are a common sight with around 11,200 shops across the UK, according to the survey conducted by the Charity Retail Association. During business hours the public can donate their unwanted items to a charity shop clothes, books, electronics, furniture. These items are checked for wear and tear and if found still serviceable, priced up to be sold at a heavily discounted price.

For many, this is a win-win situation. To the charity, it means a valuable source of income. To the consumer, it provides the opportunity to buy, often extremely cheaply, items and clothes. To the donator, it may help to assuage consumer guilt. “You can make a pretty good case to yourself that you are doing good, because what you are doing is going towards a charitable cause and you are saving stuff from landfill(垃圾堆),” Clare Press, fashion journalist and sustainable style advocate, tells the Guardian.

There are sometimes hidden treasures for the buyers, too. Take a screen print for example. It was bought for 99p and later found to be by English artist Ben Nicholson. It was sold for £ 4, 200. So next time you need to rid yourself of something, spare a thought for the charity shop—after all, charity begins at home!

C.Be environmentally friendly. D.Make a difference for the future.

  • 24、At the beginning of the World Series of 1947,I experienced a completely new emotion, when the National Anthem was playedThis time,I thought,it is being played for me,as much as for anyone else. This is organized major league baseball, and I am standing here with all the others;and everything that takes place includes me.

About a year later,I went to Atlanta,Georgia,to play in an exhibition game.On the field, for the first time in Atlanta, there were Negroes and whites.Other Negroesbesides me.And I thought: What I have always believed has come to be.

And what is it that I have always believed? First, that imperfections are human. But that wherever human beings were given room to breathe and time to think, those imperfections would disappear,no matter how slowly.I do not believe that we have found or even approached perfection. That is not necessarily in the scheme of human events.Handicaps, stumbling blocks, prejudices all of these are imperfect.Yet,they have to be dealt with because they are in the scheme of human events.

Whatever obstacles I found made me fight all the harder. But it would have been impossible for me to fight at all, except that I was sustained by the personal and deep-rooted belief that my fight had a chance. It had a chance because it took place in a free society. Not once was I forced to face and fight an immovable object. Not once was the situation so cast-iron rigid that I had no chance at all.Free minds and human hearts were at work all around me;and so there was the probability of improvement.I look at my children now,and know that I must still prepare them to meet obstacles and prejudices.

But I can tell them, too, that they will never face some of these prejudices because other people have gone before them. And to myself I can say that, because progress is unalterable, many of today's dogmas (教条)will have vanished by the time they grow into adults.I can say to my children: There is a chance for you.No guarantee, but a chance. And this chance has come to be,because there is nothing static with free people. There is no Middle Ages logic so strong that it can stop the human tide from flowing forwardI do not believe that every person,in every walk of life, can succeed in spite of any handicap. That would be perfection. But I do believe and with every fiber in me that what I was able to attain came to be because we put behind us (no matter how slowly) the dogmas of the past: to discover the truth of today;and perhaps find the greatness of tomorrow.

I believe in the human race.I believe in the warm heart.I believe in man's honesty.I believe in the goodness of a free society. And I believe that the society can remain good only as long as we are willing to fight for it and to fight against whatever imperfections may exist. My fight was against the barriers that kept Negroes out of baseball. This was the area where I found imperfection, and where I was best able to fight. And I fought because I knew it was not doomed to be a losing fight. It couldn't be a losing fight-not when it took place in a free society. And in the largest sense,I believe that what I did was done for me that it was my faith in God that sustained me in my fight. And that what was done for me must and will be done for others.

【1】Why did the author say he had experienced a completely new emotion?

    A. Because he won game.

    B. Because he was an American.

    C. Because he could compete in the game and won the game.

    D. Because the National Game was played for him.

【2】From the passage,we know that the author is ___________.

    A. an African

    B. a Chinese

    C. a white man

    D. a black man

    【3】The author firmly believed that____________.

    A. humans are imperfect if they all unite together to overcome the difficulties.

    B. humans needn't approach perfect even if they can.

    C. humans should face the obstacles and fight for it bravely.

    D. humans are becoming kind and honest if they have freedom.

【4】We can infer from the passage that_________.

    A. the fight between Negroes and Whites never ends

    B. the civil war broke out because the Negroes fought for their freedom

    C. In the past Negroes were kept out of baseball.

    D. the fight ended up with a game.

    【5】The underlined word ‘vanished’most probably means __________

    A. disappear

    B. increase

    C. appear

    D. happen

【6】The best title of this passage may be_________.

    A. Nothing matters except fighting

    B. Success lies in hard work

    C. freedom is everything

    D. Free Minds and Hearts makes a difference

  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。

“There’s our guide,” I said to the bus driver. He stopped and opened the door to let me off. “You must be Becky.” she said.”My name is Anne.”

As the tour director for a group of forty-three. I quickly confirmed with Anne the sites we would like to see during the next four hours: the Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial, and the White House. Most importantly, we discussed when and where to let everyone have a break. It was not a simple matter for so many people. Then we climbed aboard to begin our tour of Washington D.C..

After introducing Anne to the busload of waiting tourists, I handed the microphone to her and made my way toward the last seat. The conversation with a guide usually ended there since she stayed busy engaging guests. My job was to ensure nobody got lost. But on that day, we managed a brief chat in the shade of a tree by the lawn.

“Where are you from?” Anne asked.” Alabama. Are you from Washington.D.C.?” “Well, I live here now, but I was born in Ohio,”she said.“ I was born in Ohio, too.” “Where did you grow up?” she asked in surprise. “ Middletown,” I answered. “Me too!”“Why did you leave home and come here?” I asked. “My father is an orthopedic(骨科的)doctor and he came here for further study……” “An orthopedic doctor? Sorry to interrupt you, but what’s your father’s name?”I felt like I couldn’t breathe at the moment. “Edward Cooper,” she answered. “ Mr.Cooper! My doctor’s name was Edward Cooper,”I said. “That’s really my dad!”Anne exclaimed.

My parents had told me a story. I was born without the left arm, and my left leg turned inward. Then an orthopedic doctor placed a cast from my hip to my tiny toes magically. Thankfully, my leg straightened out and grew strong. By ten months, I could take my first steps.

    Paragraph 1:

At the time of the joy, however, my parents dreaded the final bill for the months of orthopedic care.
