  • 21、Vincent Van Gogh(30 Mareh 1853~29 July 1890)was a Dutch Post-Impressionist artist. He is considered one of the greatest artists with great influence on 20th century art.

Van Gogh spent his early adult life working for a firm of art dealers. After a brief period as a teacher, he became a missionary(传教士)worker in a very poor mining region. He did not begin his career as an artist until 1880; however during the last ten years of his life, he produced more than 2,000 pieces, including around 900 paintings and 1,100 drawings and sketches(素描).

He worked only with sombre(昏暗的)colours until he met Impressionism and Neo-Impressionism in Paris. Van Gogh incorporated(合并)their bright colours and style of painting into a uniquely recognizable style. Most of his best-known works were produced during his final two years, when he was suffering from serious mental illness.

In 1890, at the age of 37, Van Gogh shot himself in the chest. He died two days later, with Theo, his brother and his best friend, at his side, who reported his last words as “The sadness will last forever”. Theo, unable to come to terms with his brother’s death died 6 months later and was buried next to him. It would not take long before his fame grew higher and higher.

Vincent Van Gogh’s mother threw away quite a number of his paintings during Vincent’s life and even after his death. But she would live long enough to see her son become a world famous painter.

The only painting he sold during his lifetime, The Red Vineyard, was created in 1888. It is now on display in the Pushkin Museum in Moscow, Russia. Several paintings by Van Gogh rank among the most expensive paintings in the world.

On March 30, 1987 Van Gogh’s painting Irises was sold for a record 53.9 million at Southeby’s, New York. On May 15, 1990 his Portrait of Doctor Gachet was sold for $82.5 million at Christie’s, thus establishing a new price record.

  • 22、Swot satellite is scheduled to be launched Thursday morning to conduct a comprehensive survey of Earth’s vital resource. By using advanced microwave radar technology, it will collect height-surface measurements of oceans, lakes and rivers in high-definition detail over 90% of the globe. It’s really the first time to observe nearly all water on the planet’s surface.

The major mission is to explore how oceans absorb atmospheric heal and CO2 in a natural process that adjusts climate change. Oceans are estimated to have absorbed more than 90% of the extra heat trapped in the Earth’s atmosphere by human-caused greenhouse gases. Swot will scan (查看) the seas and precisely measure fine differences in surface elevations (高度) around smaller currents and eddies (漩涡), where much of the oceans’ decrease of heat and carbon is believed to occur. “Studying the mechanism will help climate scientists answer a key question: What is the turning point at which oceans start releasing, rather than absorbing, huge amounts of heat back into the atmosphere and speed up global warming, rather than limiting it,” said Nadya Shiffer, Swot’s program scientist.

By comparison, earlier studies of water bodies relied on data of rivers or oceans taken at specific points, or from satellites that can only track measurements along a one-dimensional line, requiring scientists to fill in data gaps through extrapolation (外推法). Thanks to the radar instrument, Swot can scan through cloud cover and darkness over wide ranges of the Earth. This enables scientists to accurately map their observations in two dimensions regardless of weather or time of day and to cover large geographic areas far more quickly than was previously possible.

“Rather than giving us a line of elevations, it’s giving us a map of elevations, and that’s just a total game changer,” said Tamlin Pavelsky, Swot freshwater science leader.

【1】What do the underlined words “vital resource” in the first paragraph refer to?

    A.Technology.

    B.Climate.

    C.Oceans.

    D.Water.

【2】What is the major mission of Swot satellite?

A.To explore where oceans absorb heat and CO2.

B.To explain why greenhouse gas comes into being.

C.To identify when global warming is worsened.

D.To study how oceans influence climate change.

【3】What makes it possible for Swot to measure precisely?

    A.The high-definition computer.

    B.Advanced radar technology.

    C.The three-dimensional image.

    D.An accurate map of elevations.

【4】Which is the most suitable title for the text?

A.First Global Water Survey from Space

    B.Successful Launch of Swot Satellite

    C.A Breakthrough in Space Travel

    D.A Solution to Climate Change

  • 23、With jeweled pins in her hair, a sweeping red silk dress hung over her gauze (薄纱) sleeves, Beijinger Xin Nan looks like she’s just stepped out of a dynasty hundreds of years in the past.

  • 24、   When Central Bucks South became one of the first Philadelphia-area high schools to close due to fear of novel coronavirus exposure in early March, 16-year-old sophomore Andrew Chen knew that things were not going to return to normal as quickly as some of his peers hoped.

But still, the change from seeing his friends on the swim team during daily practices to learning alone at home was jarring. “I only have three years here at South, and it pains me to see one of them being wasted,” Chen said.

The coronavirus has upended everyone’s lives, but for students, the disruption feels particularly acute. Schools closed and graduation ceremonies were canceled. Summer plans, like camps and internships, are up in the air.

But right now, many students are trying to stay connected, struggling with misinformation, and figuring out the best ways they can help through online method.

For Josh Harycki, 17, a senior student at the Shipley School in Philadelphia, the best way to contribute was to create a “social distancing pledge” for young people.

“I saw a lot of younger generations not paying attention,” he said. “They were still going out, hanging out with people. I thought that there had to be a way to reach younger folks, who were probably not watching the news.”

Harycki launched a call to action on social media and then built a website with a map that tracked the locations of people who’d signed the pledge. The site also shares links to accurate sources of information like the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Harycki knows that his peers are worried they can’t connect with their friends in the same way, so he created the social distancing pledge to stress that while everyone might be physically distant, they’re still connected.

“Part of what we’re highlighting is that you might feel like you’re the only one taking this seriously, but our map shows that you’re not alone,” he said.

1What do the underlined words “up in the air” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?

    A.unnatural B.uncertain C.unnecessary D.unreasonable

2Why does the author describe Andrew Chen’s experience in the text?

A.To show how the coronavirus affected students’ lives.

B.To explain what worried students most when schools closed.

C.To illustrate the appropriate reaction to the closure of school.

D.To present the different views of students toward the coronavirus.

3Who does Harycki mainly want to reach out to?

A.Friends who are worried and bored.

    B.Folks taking the coronavirus seriously.

C.Younger generations trying to contribute to society.

D.Young people who are not aware of the situation.

4What’s Harycki’s purpose in creating the “social distancing pledge”?

A.To track those people infected with the coronavirus.

B.To convince young people to stay at home.

C.To inform young folks of latest news about the coronavirus.

D.To show young people they shouldn’t be concerned about the coronavirus.

  • 26、Directions: Read the following three passages. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.

Back in January, the Chinese tech giant Huawei grabbed the world's attention at the Consumer Electronics Show 2017 in Las Vegas. Richard Yu, the chief of the company's consumer division, said that Huawei shipped 139 million smartphones in 2016, an amazing number, although still far less than Samsung and Apple. More than half of Huawei's revenues come from outside China, making it one of only a few Chinese companies to have made the transition from a local business to a global brand.

What makes Huawei so successful? As with many great companies, part of the solution to this puzzle lies in the values that define the culture of the Chinese giant.

Many companies take customer-focused attitudes, but few of them truly live by it. Huawei distinguishes itself from its competitors in this regard. In an interview, Ren Zhengfei, founder and president of Huawei, mentioned an early episode in the company's history. In rural areas in China, rats often bit the telecom wires, destroying customers' connections. Multinational telecommunications companies providing service at that time did not consider this to be their problem, but rather that of the customers. Huawei, by contrast, thought it was their responsibility to solve the problem. In doing so, they developed chew-proof equipment and materials. Later on, the experience helped it gain several big orders in the Middle East, where similar problems exist.

Huawei emphasizes that the only way to obtain opportunities is through hard work. In the early years of the company, every new employee was given a blanket and a mattress. Many of them would work late into the night and then sleep in their offices. As one Huawei employee said, "The pads were to us a representation of hard work in the old days. This idea has now evolved into the spirit of trying to be the best in anything we do."

Ren and his company are also known for what they call "the power of thinking." Efforts are made to ensure regular intellectual exchanges. Executives are urged to read books outside their areas of expertise. Feedback is always invited across the company to improve ideas that will ultimately feed the vision of Huawei's future.
