26、In Stockholm, the Swedish Academy has chosen the British author Doris Lessing for the 2007 Nobel Prize in Literature.
The selection of Doris Lessing for a Nobel was popular among the hundreds of journalists gathered for the announcement in Stockholm.
Permanent Secretary of the Swedish Academy Horace Engdahl said with skepticism, fire and visionary power Lessing has subjected a divided civilization to scrutiny.
Doris Lessing was born in 1919 in Persia—modern-day Iran—to British parents, moving as a child with her family to southern Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe, where she stayed in school only to the age of 14.
A year after moving to London, she published her first novel in 1950. The Grass is Singing examines unbridgeable racial conflict in colonial Africa through the eyes of a white farmer's wife and her black servant.
A member of the British Communist Party during the 1950s and a campaigner against nuclear arms and South African apartheid, Lessing was for years banned from that country and from Rhodesia.
Her literary breakthrough came in 1962 with publication of The Golden Notebook, seen by many, though not necessarily Lessing, as a pioneering work of modern feminism. A disjointed study of the mind of the main character, Anna Wulf, the novel explores her thoughts about Africa, politics and communism, relationships with men and sex, and Jungian analysis and dream interpretation.
Lessing's themes shifted to psychology in her works from the 1960s, and by the 1970s she was fascinated with the Islamic mystic tradition of Sufism. Her turn toward science fiction with the Canopus series in the early 1980s was not warmly received by traditionalist critics, but she has continued to win new readers and numerous literary awards, including the David Cohen British Literary Prize and the Companion of Honour from the Royal Society of Literature, both in 2001.
Following the announcement, the Horace Engdahl told VOA why he was personally so pleased with Lessing's selection.
“She is one of the truly great writers of novels, short stories, fiction and non-fiction,” Engdahl said. “She is one of the few writers who have had the courage to uphold the principle of equality between the male and female experience, and she has given the impulse to numbers of other women writers. And she is really the mother of a school that is one of the most important in our contemporary literature.”
At 87, Doris Lessing is the oldest Nobel Literature laureate since the first prizes were awarded in 1901. Each Nobel Prize is this year accompanied by a check for approximately $1.4 million.

27、 OTTAWA—After leaving suddenly almost twenty years ago, fans of one Italian car brand (品牌) have been crying. “Oh, Alfa Romeo, where are you?” But with the arrival of the all-new Alfa Romeo 4C sports car this year, parent Fiat’s sportiest brand is back in business in Canada. The question is: Will anybody care?
Although it hasn’t sold a new car in Canada since 1995, the Alfa Romeo brand is one of the oldest in the car industry. It was founded in 1910. It quickly became well-known for making fast, beautiful and expensive sports cars. An Italian state-holding company took over in the early 1930s, but since 1986, the Alfa brand has been owned by Fiat.
Unfortunately, Alfa Romeo met fresh competition from Japan. By the mid-1990s, Alfa’s lone North American offerings were the Spider roadster (单排座敞篷轿车).
Many Alfa fans will tell you the brand’s success is on the racetracks (赛车场). Dating back to 1913, Alfa Romeo has always had a strong factory presence in racing. But since the late-1980s the Italian automaker has become less involved in car races.
While Alfa Romeo has shot a few videos of its new mid-engine, two-seat 4C on a racetrack. there are no plans for the car maker to get back into racing.
One of the biggest attractions for Toronto Alfa Romeo fan Vytas Svedas is the brand’s racing past. He currently takes part in many races with his father with a 1966 Alfa Giulia Sprint GT, and he thinks if Alfa wants to be taken seriously as it returns to selling cars in Canada, it has to get back on the racetrack.
Of course, not all Alfa fans need a racetrack to enjoy their cars. David Semel is the president of the Alfa Romeo Club of Ottawa. Semel’s current ride is a 1964 Alfa Romeo Giulia SS. And, he admits, the main attraction of the Giulia SS is the way the car looks, not how fast it can go.
【1】What do we know about Alfa Romeo?
A. It is quite affordable for the common people.
B. It is a brand of a state-holding company.
C. It has a history of about a century.
D. It entered Canada in 1995.
【2】Why did Alfa Romeo lose its Canadian market?
A. Because the Canadians lost interest in sports cars.
B. Because there were fewer car races held in Canada.
C. Because it faced very strong competition from Japan.
D. Because its quality couldn’t meet the local buyers needs.
【3】What’s Wytas Svedas’s attitude towards Alfa Romeo s not getting back into racing?
A. Understanding. B. Unconcerned.
C. Pleased. D. Disappointed.
【4】According to David Semel, Alfa Romeo ________.
A. will return to racing sooner or later
B. has other advantages besides speed
C. is not necessarily the fastest car
D. is losing lots of its fans
28、When Harrison School District 2 turned to e-learning last spring, they made sure to provide each student with a laptop and the tools needed to succeed at home. But one remaining need in many families was Internet access.
Christine O’Brien, spokesperson for District 2 said, "When you had many people learning and working from home, sometimes there were Internet glitches. We wanted to avoid that and make sure students in our district could have equal chances to learn and that our families could learn from home as well."
O’Brien said that this year they made sure to survey each of their students to see who exactly needed the Internet.
“This year we were really specific about asking whether families had Internet service at home without a phone," she said. They discovered that about a thousand families needed some sort of Internet connection.
And that’s where Altia came into play. A local software company heard there was an Internet shortage for students and it stepped in to see how they could help. Teaming up with local foundations (基金会), they were able to provide a monthly Internet service that allows many people to have Internet access at the same time. Mike Juran, CEO of Altia said; “At Altia we talked to Randy Rocha at District 2 and I just put out an email to friends and people that I knew and that made its way back to Pikes Peak Community Foundation and Norwood Foundation and people spread that around. Within weeks we were able to get something done."
"The community came together and helped us piece this part. We worked so hard as a school district to get those devices into the hands of students but this was a piece that we weren’t ready to do. We hadn’t budgeted (预算) for it, so the community’s coming together to help our families in this way was really truly amazing," said O’Brien.
【1】What does the underlined word “glitches” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A.Users.
B.Services.
C.Problems.
D.Repairmen.
【2】What did Harrison School District 2 do according to O’Brien?
A.They kept track of students’ situations.
B.They sold laptops to students cheaply.
C.They kept holding new learning programs.
D.They encouraged students to treat each other equally.
【3】How did Altia help to make e-learning easier?
A.By visiting the families every month.
B.By sending emails to students every week.
C.By setting up a local foundation to raise money.
D.By offering Internet service to students in need.
【4】Why was O’Brien so thankful for the community?
A.It inspired students to be helpful and active.
B.It helped deliver devices to the hands of students.
C.It added a big part to the school’s planned budget.
D.It solved things the school district was unprepared for.
29、 New Year’s resolutions(决心)often fail, but now a new study may just provide motivation for you to stick to them. Scientists found that meeting goals — such as giving up drinking or smoking — can slash your risk of cancer.
The large-scale study — of half a million Britons — looked at the effects of quitting tobacco, limiting alcohol intake, maintaining a low body mass index (BMI), exercising regularly and eating a healthy diet. Each individual behaviour was found to bring a decrease in the chance of getting cancer of about eight per cent. But if people carried out all together the overall risk reduction was about a third — and likely a greater cut in deaths from the disease.
The researchers from Cardiff University examined data from 343,150 people from the UK Biobank to identify the five healthy behaviours and compare them to the risk of cancer. The subjects were aged 40 to 69 and 14,285 were diagnosed (诊断)with the disease during an average follow-up of just over five years. The team found that adopting(采用)all the studied healthy behaviours brought a 25 and 35 percent reduction in bowel and breast cancer respectively — two of the most common forms of the disease.
The team said the findings may not sound surprising — but they serve as a reminder of the importance behind turning resolutions into permanent lifestyle choices.
Professor Elwood, the lead researcher, said the real problem for people adopting resolutions was translating the unclear idea of lifestyle choices being “good” into useful evidence — which was what this study provided. “A healthy lifestyle has many additional benefits to cancer reduction — it costs nothing, has no undesirable side effects…and is better than any pill.”
【1】What does the underlined word “slash” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. Cut. B. Increase.
C. Change. D. Keep.

【3】According to Professor Elwood, the research is mainly aimed at ______.
A. warning people of the risk of cancer
B. removing people’s doubts about healthy lifestyles
C. persuading people into sticking to healthy lifestyles
D. proving the relation between lifestyles and cancer
【4】What would probably be the best title?

B. Quit New Year’s Resolutions? Think Again!
C. Make Your New Year’s Resolutions Wisely!
D. Healthy Lifestyles Bring Down Cancer Risks!
