26、 Filmmaker Jennifer Nelson was sued (起诉) for $1,500 for having a song “Happy Birthday to You” sung in the movie she’s making. The money went to Warner Music Group, a company that claims to own the copyright on the song. A copyright is the legal right to use or sell a creative product such as a song, a TV show, a book, or a work of art. Warner has claimed the copyright for “Happy Birthday to You” since 1988.
“I never thought the song was owned by anyone,” Nelson said in an e-mail to The New York Times. “I thought it belonged to everyone.”
Nelson’s movie is a documentary—a film that uses pictures and/or interviews with people to create a factual report of real-life events—and is actually about the history of the “Happy Birthday” song itself.
Two sisters named Mildred and Patty Hill wrote a song called “Good Morning to All” in 1893. Over a short period of time, people began to sing the words “happy birthday to you” in place of the original lyrics to the tune of the Hill sisters’ song.
A number of history experts say that there is no record of who actually wrote the “Happy Birthday to You” lyrics. Historians also say there is no way to know when the general public began singing the “Happy Birthday” song, but they believe it had been sung by the public long before it was printed and owned by a company.
Nelson’s lawyers say this piece of music’s history proves that “Happy Birthday to You” belongs to everyone in the general public. That would mean Warner Music Group has no right to charge anyone a fee to sing the song in any setting.
Experts estimate that Warner/Chappell, the publishing division of the Warner Music Group, has made about $2 million a year from licensing fees for “Happy Birthday to You.” Nelson’s lawyers are asking a court in New York City to order Warner/Chappell to return fees they have collected over the past four years for use of the “Happy Birthday” song.
【1】Why did Warner Music Group sue Jennifer Nelson?
A.Because she sold “Happy Birthday to You” for money.
B.Because she secretly used “Happy Birthday to You” song in her film.
C.Because she didn’t own the copyright on “Happy Birthday to You” song.
D.Because she used the “Happy Birthday to You” song without permission.
【2】How was the “Happy Birthday” song produced?
A.Someone replaced “happy birthday to you” in the song.
B.It was written by Mildred as a gift for her sister’s birthday in 1893.
C.It was created by someone who used the tune of “Good Morning to All”.
D.People were asked to sing the words “happy birthday to you” in the movie.
【3】The history experts’ statement can prove that the “Happy Birthday” song__________.
A.has always been very popular B.was definitely released by the public
C.does not belong to Warner Music Group D.has more than 32 years’ history since 1988
【4】If the court supports the claim from Nelson’s lawyers,__________.
A.Warner will return about $8 million B.she can obtain the copyright on the song
C.Warner will have to pay her for her damage D.she can sell the song for about$2 million a year
27、 This isn't just a social expectation. One study found that women cry greatly more than men do-five times as often,on average, and almost twice as long each time.So it's perhaps surprising to learn that the sex gap in crying seems to be a recent development.Historically, men regularly cried, and no one saw it as shameful. For example,in the early stories, men cried purely because they missed their girlfriends. There's n mention of the men in these stories pretending(假装)1o have.something in their eyes or making an excuse to leave the room.Instead, they cried in a crowded hall with their heads held high and nobody made fin of them.
So where did all the male tears go?There was no anti-crying movement. No leaders of church or state discouraged them.Possibly this change took place as we moved to an industrial society. In the Middle Ages, most people spent their lives among those they had known since birth. Most of them related by blood or marriage. If men cried, they did so with people who would feel and understand the same way.But from the 18th to 20th centuries, people were living among thousands of strangers.Furthermore, changes in the economy required men to work in factories or offices where emotional expression was discouraged as time wasting.
Yet there's reason to believe that holding back tears can be harmful to your well-being.Research has suggested a relationship between stress-related illnesses and inadequate(不足的)crying.Men holding back tears are less likely than women to get help when they’re suffering from unhappiness, which,in turn, results in higher self-killing rates as well as higher rates of alcoholism(酗酒)and drug addiction.
It's time to open the floodgates. When bad luck strikes, let us all,men and women, join together and cry until our sleeves are wet through.
【1】What can we say about the men crying in the early stories?
A.It was surprising. B.It was natural.

C.distant relatives D.familiar people
【3】What might lead to alcoholism according to the text?
A.Ordinary illnesses. B.Helpless situations.
C.Enough crying. D.Drug addition.
【4】What does the author seem to suggest men do?
A.Hold back tears. B.Follow bad luck.
C.Cry uncontrollably. D.Cry in a low voice.

29、 Humans have always been curious about what Earth was like thousands of years ago. To learn more about the plants and animals that lived during that time, scientists examine their fossils or other remains. In recent years, genetics, and in particular the the study of DNA, has become an important tool for these scientists. Some people even dream of bringing ancient creatures such as dinosaurs back to life. Although no animals have been brought back yet, scientists have managed to grow a number of ancient plants from seeds. By far theoldest of these plants is a 32,000-year-old plant that has been grown again by Russian scientists.
The plant is a flower called Silenestenophylla, which used to grow in Siberia in eastern Russia. The scientists discovered seeds and fruits of the plant buried deep below the ground. They believe the seeds and fruits were put there by an ancient animal which stored them to eat during the winter. The seeds that scientists found failed to grow because they were damaged. However, the scientists were able to take genetic material from the fruit to grow a new plant. Then, this plant produced new seeds which the scientists were able to use to grow more plants.
A modern relative of the original flower still grows in Siberia, but when the ancient flower was grown, it had some important differences from the modern flower. The petals on the ancient flower were much longer and also spaced further apart. Studying the ancient flower will allow the scientists to learn more about how plants have evolved.
Before this, the oldest seed to have been grown was from a 2,000-year-year-old tree in Israel. The Russian scientists believe the reason why the Siberian seeds were preserved for so long is that they were buried in permanently frozen earth, which protected the genetic information in the seeds. The scientists believe that the permanently frozen soil in Siberia contains many other ancient seeds, so they may be able to bring back even older plants. This will help them better understand the history of plants and how they have changed over time.
【1】Recently, scientist have ________.
A.been able to bring a number of ancient animals back to life
B.begun using genetics to learn more about ancient plants and animals

C.They planted the seeds deep in the ground to protect them during the cold winter.
D.They planted fruit in a new kind of container that they had specially designed.
【3】What is one thing the Russian scientists learned by comparing the ancient plant with its modern relative?
A.The plant used to produce fewer flowers than it produces now.
B.The plant has evolved to have shorter petals on its flowers.
C.The ancient plant was a different color from its modern relative.
D.The modern plant is found across a wider area of Russia than the ancient one.
【4】The Russian scientists believe that ________.
A.it is unlikely that they can grow plants from seeds that are over 2,000 years old
B.ancient seeds that were kept in Israel will be easier to grow than Russian seeds
C.they will be able to grow plants in areas where the earth is permanently frozen
D.the frozen soil in Siberia is able to keep the DNA of plants safe for a long time
【5】Which of the following statements is true?

The heart of the story lies in Pi as a young man and the time he spent out at sea on a lifeboat with a tiger named Richard Parker, but getting to that point is quite an ordeal(苦难考验).
