二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   As she walked around the huge department store, Edith reflected how difficult it was to choose a suitable Christmas present for her father. She wished that he was as easy to please as her mother, who was always delighted with perfume.

Besides, shopping at this time of the year was a most disagreeable experience: people trod () on your toes, poked () you with their elbows and almost knocked you over in their haste to get to a bargain ahead of you.

Partly to have a rest, Edith paused in front of a counter where some attractive ties were on display. “They are real silk,” the assistant assured her, trying to tempt her. “Worth double the price.” But Edith knew from past experience that her choice of ties hardly ever pleased her father.

She moved on reluctantly and then quite by chance, stopped where a small crowd of men had gathered round a counter. She found some good quality pipes on sale—and the prices were very reasonable. Edith did not hesitate for long: although her father only smoked a pipe occasionally, she knew that this was a present which was bound to please him.

When she got home, with her small well-chosen present concealed in her handbag, her parents were already at the supper table. Her mother was in an especially cheerful mood, “Your father has at last decided to stop smoking.” She informed her daughter.

1Why was shopping very disagreeable at that time of the year?

A.Because customers were doing their shopping in a great hurry.

B.Because customers often poked each other with their elbows.

C.Because customers often knocked each other.

D.Because some customers trod on others’ toe.

2What do we know about Edith’s father?

    A.He did not like presents.

    B.He never got presents.

    C.He preferred ties.

D.It was difficult to choose a present for him.

3How did Edith come to the next counter?

    A.Purposely. B.Happily. C.Accidentally. D.Unwillingly.

4How do you think Edith would feel when she heard her mother’s words?

    A.Glad. B.Disappointed. C.Annoyed. D.Joyful.

  • 27、   When my father was getting ready for work, our house was ruled by knocks and words.

He used to come downstairs to breakfast.

The morning paper lay beside his plate. He always read the 'Deaths' first, and then he knocked once on the table. One of my sisters brought his bread, already buttered for him. Usually he said nothing, but once I heard him say, 'I love you very much, Edith. I would love more if you buttered my bread on both sides. ' He read the paper all through breakfast.

Two knocks on the table meant 'I am ready for my tea. ' If a single knock followed that meant, 'More bread, please. '

After breakfast he said, 'Boots. ' The paper was spread (展开) for him over the back of an arm-chair. Yesterday's paper was put on the chair for his feet, and his boots were brought to him, freshly cleaned. He read standing at the same time putting on his boots. With one boot finished he said, 'Bus. ' At that point one of the girls went outside to the garden gate and waited there. Her job was to stop a bus when it came. It came early sometimes and it had to wait for my father. 'Overcoat, hat. ' One of my sisters had already brushed his overcoat. Now she held it open for him. Another girl came with his hat, nicely brushed. 'Handkerchief, pipe (烟斗). ' They were brought and put, with his tobacco (烟草), into his pocket. He looked out of the window and said either 'Walking stick' or 'Umbrella'. It was handed to him. Ready now, he was still reading the paper. He didn't put it down until he heard the shout 'Bus coming! ' Then he kissed my mother and went out. The girls breathed freely.

How lucky a man was to have a wife and five daughters at home!

1When the father made the first knock, he meant _______.

    A.his breakfast should begin

B.he had begun to read the morning newspaper

C.he was made to feel sad by the 'Deaths' news

D.he would start to read the other parts of the paper

    A.their father never helped them

B.they were not clever or quick enough to do their jobs

C.each of them had to start and finish her job just on time

D.their father always gave different instructions at the same time

    3What was the father's favorite?

    A.Giving instructions. B.Reading newspaper.

  • 28、Without sharp reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, climate change threatens future Winter Olympic Games because their locations would be too warm to host the events, a new study has found.

If the world’s high emissions continue their trend, by the 2080s all but one of the 21 cities that previously hosted the Winter Games - Sapporo, Japan - would not be able to do so again. Among them, 6 cities would be considered “marginal” while 14 would even be seen “unreliable”— meaning the right conditions for snow and athlete safety cannot be met.

But that won’t necessarily happen if the world takes urgent action and follows the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement, according to Daniel Scott, the lead researcher for the University of Waterloo’s report. Under that deal, nearly 200 countries agreed to greatly cut their collective greenhouse emissions.

Athletes and coaches surveyed by the researchers said they re already seeing the effect climate change has on their sports. “Some of the coaches that did the survey have been coaches in the sport for 30 years,” Scott said. “They’ve traveled the world, back to the same competitions, and they’ve seen that certain competitions don’t happen, as regularly or uninterruptedly as they used to because of warmer temperatures.”

The Summer Olympics are also feeling the effects of climate change. Tokyo’s Olympic and Paralympic Games are likely one of—if not—the hottest and most humid Games on record. Daily temperatures reached 80F high with high humidity (湿度) that could make it feel like 100°F.

But winter sports seem more strongly influenced by the impact of a warmer world. During the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, skiers were overheating in the same way a marathon runner would at nearly 90F weather. Due to the great impact, the study makes us worry that outdoor games may have to move indoors or be held at a different time of year altogether in order to accommodate higher temperatures.

【1】What does the underlined word “marginal” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?

    A.Almost unqualified.

    B.Pretty satisfactory.

    C.Rather unpopular.

    D.Quite suitable.

【2】Why are Tokyo’s Olympics mentioned in Paragraph 5?

A.To show the spirit of the Olympics.

B.To stress the impact of climate change.

C.To reveal the cause of warmer climate.

D.To compare summer and winter Olympics

【3】What is the author’s attitude to the finding of the study?

    A.Conservative.

    B.Tolerant.

    C.Optimistic.

    D.Concerned.

【4】What does the text mainly talk about?

    A.Global climate changes.

    B.Greenhouse gas emissions.

    C.The Winter Olympics crisis.

    D.The future Olympic Games.

  • 29、The United States space agency, NASA. says its Mars exploration vehicle recently recorded a high level of methane (甲烷) gas on the planet. The discovery is exciting because the presence of methane gas could support the case for life on Mars.

NASA's Curiosity vehicle recently recoded the largest level of methane ever measured during its seven-year Mars mission.

Methane has no color or smell. A special instrument on Curiosity's Man Science Laboratory recorded the increased gas level. The device measures levels of chemical elements and gases in the Marian atmosphere. In addition to methane, the instrument can record levels of water and carbon dioxide.

Nearly all the methane gas found in Earth's atmosphere is produced by living thing. It usually comes from animal and plant life. But it can also be formed by geological(地质的) processes, such as interactions. between rocks and water.

It was not the first time Curiosity had found methane gas in the Martian atmosphere. About a year ago, NASA announced that Curiosity had discovered sharp seasonal increases in the gas. This time, NASA said the measured methane gas level was clearly larger than any others observed in the past. "It's exciting because microbial (微生物的) life is an important source of methane on Earth," NASA said in a statement announcing the discovery.

However, Curiosity's team carried out a follow-up methane experiment that showed a sharp drop in levels of the gas. That number was "close to the background levels Curiosity sees all the time." NASA said. The rise and fall of the methane gas levels left NASA scientists with more questions than answers.

"The methane mystery continues," said Ashwin Vasavada. Curiosity's project scientist, "We're more motivated than ever to keep measuring and put our brains together to figure out how methane behaves in the Marian atmosphere."

【1】What do we know about methane go?

A.It is a must to living things.

    B.It can be found everywhere.

    C.It smells like carbon dioxide.

    D.It's mainly from biological activity.

【2】What do the explorations on Mans tell us?

A.Humans have known much about Mars.

B.There will be more methane gas on Mars.

C.There is no progress in the 7 year's research.

D.The level of methane gas on Mars is not stable.

【3】What does the discovery mean in NASA's view?

A.There may exist life on Mars.

B.Methane gas on Mars has a sudden increase.

C.The mystery about Mars will be solved soon.

D.They're known how methane as is formed on Mans.

【4】How do the NASA's scientists feel about their future exploration?

    A.Aimless.

    B.Confident.

    C.Stressed.

    D.Serious.

  • 33、For many parents, raising a teenager is like fighting a long war, but years go by without any clear winner. Like a border conflict between ________ countries, the parent-teen war is about boundaries: Where is the line between what I ________ and what you do?

Both sides want peace, but neither feels it has any power to stop the conflict. ________, this is because neither is willing to admit any responsibility for ________ it. From the parents’ point of view, the only cause of their fight is their children’s complete ________. And of course, the teens see it in exactly the same way, except ________. Both feel trapped.

In this article, I’ll describe three no-win ________ that commonly arise between teens and parents and then suggest some ways out of the ________. The first is quarrels over ________ things. Examples include the colour of the teen’s hair, the cleanliness of the bedroom, the preferred style of clothing, the child’s ________ to eat a good breakfast before school, or his tendency to sleep until noon on the weekends.

Second, blaming. The goal of a blaming battle is to make the other admit that his bad attitude is the reason why everything goes wrong. Third, needing to be right. It doesn’t matter what the ________ is—politics, the laws of physics, or the proper way to break an egg—the ________ of these arguments is to prove that you are right and the other person is wrong, for both wish to be considered a(n) ________—someone who actually knows something—and therefore to command ________. Unfortunately, as long as parents and teens continue to assume that they ________ more than the other, they’ll continue to fight these battles forever and never make any real progress.

四、短文填空 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 34、Directions: Complete the following passage by using the words in the box. Each word can only be used once. Note that there is one word more than you need.

Driving an electric car 1 to the protection of environment, or so the marketing departments of their makers would have you believe. Yet a report which analyzes car emissions presents a rather different picture. A battery-powered car recharged with 2 generated by coal-fired power stations, it found, is likely to be more harmful. It could cause more than three times as many deaths from pollution as a 3 petrol-driven vehicle.

The study was carried out by the University of Minnesota. The researchers estimated how levels of fine particulate matter (细颗粒物) and ground-level ozone two important 4 of air pollution — would change when a car is powered by different ways.

It was no surprise that electric cars whose batteries were recharged with power from wind, solar or hydro-electric sources came out to be virtually free from harmful 5. They were estimated to cause 231 deaths over the course of a year, compared with 878 for petrol cars. Electric cars recharged with power from natural gas-fired stations were also a lot less harmful than petrol-driven ones, with 439 deaths. But if those same electric cars were recharged 6 by coal, they would be responsible for over 3,000 deaths.

Biofuels also caused more health problems than petrol. But diesel, which often  7 concern about pollution, is slightly cleaner than petrol. This is because the study assumes for all cars that emission-control technologies will be more widely used, especially particulate filters which have a remarkable effect on cleaning diesel 8. Diesel cars are also more 9 of fuel than petrol-driven ones.

Overall, the study shows that electric cars are cleaner than those traditional vehicles only if the power used to charge then is also clean. That is hardly a surprise, but the 10 of the difference is. How green electric cars really are, then, will depend mainly on where they are driven. In France, which obtains more than half of its power from nuclear station, electric cars look like a good bet. In China and some other developing countries, where a large amount of electricity is produced from coal, they may not be so environment- friendly as they are marketed.

Expressions about water are almost as common as water itself. But many of the expressions using water have unpleasant meanings.

The expression “to be in hot water” is one of them. It is a very old expression, which can be 1 back to 500 years ago. The expression is used to mean being in trouble. One story says it got that meaning from the custom of throwing extremely hot water down on enemies attacking a castle.

"Throwing cold water" also is an expression that deals with an idea or 10. For example, you want to buy a new car because the old one has some problems. But you wife "throws cold water" on the idea, because she says a new car costs too much

  • 41、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

Located halfway up the Italy’s Apennine Mountain, about 100 miles northeast of Rome, the Hotel Rigopiano has never been easy to reach. But its isolation(隔绝)only adds to its appeal, attracting a great number of tourists.

Snow began to fall across the Apennines in January and lasted for days. From his home in the Rome suburbs, Matrone watched the weather with concern. He and his wife, Cicioni, had planned an overnight getaway to the hotel. But now he wondered whether they should go. After phoning the hotel, they decided to make the trip. By the time they neared the hotel six hours later, they were battling a snowstorm. When they finally arrived, they were both cold and exhausted. They checked into their room and went to bed early.

As they awoke the next day, they discovered that their difficulty had worsened overnight. The cars in the parking lot were invisible. The phone and power lines were down. They were having breakfast when the hotel began to shake. An earthquake with a magnitude(震级)of 5.7 had struck the mountain. “Get out of here!” Matrone shouted to his wife. They headed quickly to the parking lot, where others were digging their cars.Fifteen minutes after the first earthquake, another quake hit, this one measuring 5.6.

With a dozen vehicles freed by noon, the guests set off down the driveway. But when they reached the main road, the path was blocked by a six-foot-high wall of snow.Matrone climbed out of his car and investigated it. There was no road in sight, “We’re trapped!” he told his wife. So they had no choice but to make their way back to the hotel so as to be saved.

As it was getting dark, they managed to be back. That was when the snow on the mountain began to slide. They heard the avalanche (雪崩) before they saw it. The avalanche gathered speed and size, grabbing rocks and trees and anything else in its way down the mountain, tearing the hotel from its foundation. When the avalanche came to a stop, those caught inside the hotel were left buried in the icy rocks and ruins.
