二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、Can you think of something that has been around for thousands of years and is still used in different cultures around the world? Something that fits this description is makeup.

Even though makeup might seem new, it was an important part of daily life in ancient Egypt thousands of years ago. At that time, both men and women utilized things like eyeshadow, eyeliner and lipstick nearly every day.

For a more intense make-up result, a wealthier Egyptian woman would first clear her dead skin using salts from the Dead Sea. Then, she would use a milk-and-honey face mask to wet her skin. Taking milk baths was also a way to make the beauty routine a more luxurious experience. After all of this, the makeup could then be applied.

But people in ancient Egypt didn't just use makeup to look more attractive. They also used it for rituals(宗教仪式), symbolic meanings and practical purposes. For example, a black powder called kohl was used around the eyes to protect them from the bright desert sun. In fact, the Egyptian word for "makeup palette" comes from a word that means "to protect".

These makeup palettes were used to mix colored powders with animal fat or vegetable oils to make the different products. They usually had symbols of animals or goddesses on them. It was believed that the powers of these animals would be put into the makeup when it was mixed together, giving the wearer exceptional talents.

Interestingly enough, makeup was also an important part of ancient Egyptian burial rituals. From life into death and beyond, makeup helped to shape ancient Egyptian culture. Even though makeup is still used in modem times, it is interesting to know that it is linked to the ancient world.

  • 27、Sunaian’s family left India and moved to the UK when she was 13. She had to start a new school...

I remember it really well. My parents drove me to the school and said goodbye to me. I took a deep breath and walked into the school.

I didn’t know what to feel. I was excited and scared and a bit nervous, all at the same time. There were lots of other kids around. They were already in groups of friends, but none of them said hello or anything. It was a strange feeling for me, like I didn’t really belong there. I wanted to be somewhere else, but that wasn’t possible.

The first thing I had to do was register, so I went to a room in the school that had a sign saying “Administration”. Suddenly, I felt like I was some kind of criminal. They started asking me all kinds of questions. Then I went off to my first class.

My first class. Wow, that was horrible. Perhaps it was because my hair or clothes were different, but everyone just looked at me in such a strange way. And just like when I arrived, no one came to talk to me. Incredibly, that’s never happened: no one has even taken the time to get to know me or like me. I have friends because I made the first move to meet people.

Maybe the worst class that day, though, was Science. The teacher wasn’t too bad. She introduced me to the class and showed me where to sit. But the other students? Well, they looked at me like I was a guinea pig or something they were going to use for an experiment. I hated every minute.

Then there was a break and I went to sit somewhere alone, missing my mum and dad. But I thought they’d want me to keep trying, so I tried to be more positive in the next class. Not so good, though. Everyone talked to other students, but I sat by myself. At the end of the day, I couldn’t wait to get out of there.

But, as time passed, things have got better. Now I’m doing fine and I get OK grades. I’ve learned lots of things — but not what the teachers teach. I’ve learned that I’m strong and brave. I’ve learned that I will succeed even if some things aren’t the way I want them to be.

【1】From the passage, we can learn that ______.

A.Sunaina was well received upon the arrival at school

B.Sunaina was treated as a criminal in the register department.

C.Nobody wanted to waste time getting to know Sunaina at first.

D.Other students’ hair and clothes were similar to Sunaina in her class.

【2】What made Sunaina think Science the worst class that day?

A.The Science teacher’s quality and qualification.

B.The way the other students looked at Sunaina.

C.The way the teacher introduced Sunaina to the class.

D.The other students’ thinking of using Sunaina for an experiment.

【3】Which of the following is suitable to describe Sunaina?

    A.Weak and scary.

    B.Tough and courageous.

    C.Sensitive and shy.

    D.Generous and outgoing.

【4】What does the story intend to tell us?

A.What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.

B.A life without a friend is a life without a sun.

C.Even the darkest night will end and the sun will rise.

D.A good word is warm in winter, but a bad word hurts in June.

  • 29、   For centuries, people have moved to and lived in cities. These urban centres are places to find work, friends and fun. It's no surprise that they continue to grow as more and more people flood in hoping to make the most of the chances they offer but adding to the congestion and pollution that already exist.

According to a report by the United Nations, 54 percent of the world's population lives in urban areas and it predicts that by 2050,this figure will have increased to around 70 percent. But as more and more people move from the countryside to the city to get better chances, they can end up with nowhere to live.

This is true in places such as Rio de Janeiro, where the people from the countryside can't rent or buy a home, and they end up building their own communities and houses on unoccupied land. These are called shanty towns— poor communities where the houses are built out of cheap materials—and often don't have any electricity or water supply.

These are, of course, not the future cities we want to see. Some serious urban planning is needed to make our cities of the future good, safe and modern places to live in. This involves improving the housing conditions, the chances for education and employment and so on.

Something urban planners are looking at now is the creation of“smart cities”. According to John Rossant, founder and chairman of the non-profit organisation New Cities Foundation, technology is the way forward. He thinks that it's generally accepted that “cloud computing, ubiquitous Internet, robust 5G networks etc, will change our cities”. He says technology is really “a game changer” in urbanization (城市化). It would collect large amounts of data about how a city is working and may improve how a city functions.

1Why will a larger population be living in a city by 2050?

A.Because the government encourages the development of cities.

B.Because more people will have more children.

    C.Because the countryside will disappear.

D.Because more people will move into the city to get more good opportunities

2What can we know about shanty towns?

A.They have good quality housing built for poor people.

B.They are filled with people living under poverty.

C.They are built by the government.

    D.They are developed and modern.

3What name is given to a city that uses technology to help it function properly?

    A.Traditional cities. B.Future cities.

    C.Smart cities. D.Developing cities

四、短文填空 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 31、Directions: Complete the following passage by using the words in the box. Each word can be used only once. Note that there is one word more than you need.

The view that the spirit of adventure no longer has any scope for its enterprise seems, at first glance, depressingly true. The highest mountains have been scaled; the deepest seas plumbed. Maps today no longer contain huge blanks marked "Unknown Territory", nor do they make random guesses at the shapes of 1 land-masses. All major journeys of exploration to 2 the true shape and nature of the globe have been made in the past. It was left to us to fill in the details with 3 which once would have been considered impossible. The gaps have been 4. What next?

The obvious answer, of course, is that man is now looking upwards into space. Discoveries are being made at such a tremendous rate that even authors of science-fiction are finding it difficult to keep up with them and have to tax their imagination to invent bigger and better space-craft. Satellites sending signals as they swing round our globe have become 5.

Astronauts have successfully landed on the moon and its entire surface has been photographed. The information that satellites may provide fueling stations for manned rockets no longer strikes us as preposterous. If thirty years ago, a scientist has urged that we send messages into outer space in the hope of receiving an answer, he would have been regarded as either irresponsible or mad. Now, anything seems 6.

From dreams like these, we return to earth with a bump. Trips into space are all very well, but they are not for us; we must 7 ourselves with our own, much-traveled world. The earth itself is the training-ground for adventurous spirits, for "adventure" need not mean the seeking out of something new. A person can be called adventurous when he finds out something for himself, and it does not matter how many times the discovery has been made before. No one would say that men who set out now to cross the forbidding Antarctic are less enterprising than their predecessors who tried to do the same thing. The little boy who climbs the small hill that 8 his town, or even he who tries to climbs and fails, has precisely the same spirit that led Hillary to climb Everest. For the bold spirit and inquiring mind, there are inexhaustible possibilities. So long as there are people willing to 9 places that are well-known, there will be those who will, one day, set foot on remote and 10 shores.
