At a conference in May of the royal college of Nursing（RCN），David Ferran，a nurse in Belfast，proposed a campaign to promote nursing to men. His proposal did not pass as the view was that nursing should be intended for anyone with the right skills，whatever the gender（性别）.

Undeterred，Mr. Ferran started a group，Northern lreland Men in Nursing，which visits schools to promote nursing as a career for men. Similar groups are being set up elsewhere. Several universities have launched social-media campaigns to draw men into nursing programmes.

With a growing decline of nurses across the National Health Service（NHS），attracting men is becoming more urgent. In 2017，for the first time in a decade，more nurses left the profession than joined. Applications to nursing programmes are down by a third since 2016. And the shadow of Brexit makes it tougher for the NHS to fill its 40，000-odd nurse vacancies from abroad. Doubts about whether they will be able to stay discourage nurses from EU countries.

Last month the NHS launched its biggest-ever nurse recruitment（招募）campaign. TV advertisements show them in action in hospital wards and ambulances，and on home visits. Some are male-an improvement from previous campaigns，but not enough to draw men in. Paul Vaughan from NHS England，who leads a proposal to change concepts of nursing，thinks recruitment should avoid playing to gender stereotypes. He takes a negative view of slogans like "Are you man enough to be a nurse?" used in the campaign.

Views of nursing as a "woman's job" have deep roots. Florence Nightingale, who established the principles of modern nursing in the 1860s, insisted that men's rough hands were not fitted to touch, bathe and dress wounded limbs. The RCN did not even admit men as members until 1960. Outdated titles such as "sister" and "matron" (used for men as well) do not help. Mr. Ferran says some patients are surprised when he shows up, because they thought only women could be nurses.

Boys do not see nursing as a career because they lack role models. In films, female nurses are cast as helpers of heroic male doctors. "When I do ward rounds with my nurse mentor and she asks questions, patients often tum to me to respond" says Richard Dowell, a third-year nursing student. On the other hand, those men who go into nursing usually follow in the footsteps of a parent or realize that it could be a career after seeing a male nurse care for a relative.

Mr. Vaughan's team at the NHS is trying to promote the image of nursing by stressing that it is a professional job in which careers can be made, that it includes special skills such as cardiology or intensive care, and that it has a use for skills in technology and leadership. Most young people also do not realize that the job can take them round the world. For men, there is another bonus. According to his study of more than 20,000 advanced nurse practitioners, men reach the seventh band(a mid-career level) four years sooner than women partly because women are twice as likely as men to work part-time and are more likely to accept a lower band to secure a job they really want. 29、A strong coffee after a poor night's sleep is the kick-start many people need in the morning but new research suggests that it might be best to have a bite to eat first.

A study has found that drinking coffee first can have a negative effect on blood sugar control - a risk factor for diabetes （糖尿病）and heart disease.

“We know that nearly half of us will wake in the morning and, before doing anything else, drink coffee --- subjectively the more tired we feel, the stronger the coffee,“ said Professor James Betts, at the University of Bath in the UK.

For their study, researchers at the University of Bath got 29 healthy men and women to take part in three different overnight experiments, with at least a week between them.

In one, the participants had a normal night's sleep, roughly from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m., and were asked to consume a sugary drink on waking in the morning. They then experienced an interrupted night's sleep, where the researchers woke them every hour for five minutes by sending them text messages to which they had to respond — and upon waking were given the same sugary drink.

On another night, participants experienced the same sleep interruption, but this time were first given a strong black coffee 30 minutes before consuming the sugary drink.

They found that one night of interrupted sleep did not worsen the participants' blood sugar and insulin （胰 岛素）responses when compared to the normal night's sleep-- although previous research suggested that losing many hours of sleep or many nights of poor sleep could have a negative effect. As a language arts teacher, I think it my duty to teach my kids how to use our tools of words well. Use your tool right—this is what I always tell them. But I never expected to learn that lesson from them.

I clearly remembered it was my 40th birthday. On that day, my sixth-grade students were seated in a large circle, each holding a different tool in their hand—a hammer, a flashlight, a screwdriver, etc. The students discussed how words are like tools—they have the ability to build or to destroy, and they discovered how the right tool used at the right time for the right job can bring about great results. They freely shared personal stories of how they had experienced someone’s words used as a tool, to wound or to heal.

I watched and listened with a sense of satisfaction—the students were engaged, attentive, and enjoying the lesson. They got it! It was one of those times when I sat back and enjoyed the magic of being a teacher—to have the opportunity to watch young people discover a greater truth about life about each other, and about themselves. There was no better gift than that.

As we neared the end of that school day, one of my students, Laura, had an unexpected outburst of defiance(违抗) in class. Busy scribbling (涂画) in her exercise book, she refused to work with her group. I was aware from reading Laura's file that she had struggled with defiant behavior in previous years, but we had developed a good relationship and she was always a respectful, thoughtful, and positive contributor to our class. Her behavior caught me off guard. “I'm disappointed in you!" With a sharp tone, I asked her to excuse herself and told her I would visit with her in our next-door meeting room after school. She refused to leave and sat silently, staring at me angrily from the back of the room.
