  • 21、   With the introduction of its new C40 Recharge on Tuesday, Volvo became the latest automaker to bet that consumers who have so far been uninterested to the idea of an EV (electric vehicle) might change their minds if it comes in a form of cars they love: the crossover (跨界车). Whether they do may be vital to the success of California’s plan to end sales of gasoline cars by 2035.

Volvo joins Ford of Europe and Jaguar in promoting EVs, promising every car it makes and sells by 2030 will be all-electric. In a webcast to introduce the new vehicle, the company also laid out a new sale strategy — the C40 and all electric Volvo cars will be available for purchase only online. A group of electric crossovers has hit the market in recent months, including the Ford Mustang Mach-E, the Tesla Model-Y and the Volkswagen ID.4.

Whether customers flock (群集) to crossover EVs will signal to regulators how much or how little work they need to do to meet the plans such as California’s. Despite the state’s aggressive plan, sales of all-electric vehicles remain less than 2% of the U.S. total.

“The manufacturers are taking a calculated risk here,” said Matt DeLorenzo of auto market research firm Kelley Blue Book. “Crossovers are popular with the mainstream. That’s where the volume is.”

Electric cars sold in the U.S. until recently were short-range ones or high-end luxury cars, neither one a high-volume category. In 2020, 2.4 million crossovers were sold in the U.S. “If you can’t sell an electric crossover, then you’ll have trouble selling any kind of vehicle,” DeLorenzo said.

To sell in large numbers, the vehicles will in the first place need continued government financial support for the next few years at least, Edmunds market analyst Caldwell said. Although battery costs are coming down, they still cost significantly more than gas engines. Although crossovers will serve as an early indicator of customer acceptance, Caldwell said she wouldn’t call 2021 a make-or-break year for EV makers.

【1】What does Volvo intend to do with its new C40 Recharge?

    A.Win more consumers on EVs.

    B.Help prevent California’s 2035 plan.

    C.Change the shape of vehicles.

D.Put people’s cool ideas into reality.

【2】Which of the following best describe the current EV market?

    A.Promising.

    B.Declining.

    C.Risky.

    D.Attractive.

【3】What do we know about the EVs sold in the US?

    A.Their sale strategies are special.

    B.They entered the market recently.

C.Their information is available only online.

    D.They aren’t of a high-volume category.

【4】What’s vital for the sales of EVs according to Caldwell?

    A.Improving the service of crossovers.

    B.Promoting the quality of batteries.

    C.Getting government’s financial support.

    D.Making 2021 a make-or-break year.

  • 22、   Most sea turtles, whales and fish may have plastic in their bodies. To determine the various forms and colors of this material in marine animals, Marga Rivas at the University of Almeria in Spain and her team analyzed data from 112 studies published in the past decade. These looked for microplastics and larger macro plastics in marine species globally.

Of the studies, 80 examined the gastrointestinal tracts (胃肠道)of animals to see what they had taken in. The others also looked at wider animal tissues to identify plastics that end up in other parts of the body. After examining all of the data, Rivas and her team concluded that 66 per cent of sea turtles have white-colored macro and microplastics in their systems, while 55 percent have a distinct class of plastic called microfibers, which are shed by some fabrics (织物). The high amount of white plastic in turtles was unsurprising, says Rivas, given that plastic of this color, particularly larger pieces, may resemble jellyfish, a large part of the animals' diets.

Microfibers were also present in 80 percent of whales and dolphins - and white macro and microplastics in 38 percent of them. The researchers also concluded that clear fiber microplastics are probably the most common form of this waste that is taken in by large marine animals globally. Rivas and her colleagues also discovered that the animals with the highest rates of plastic were those in the Mediterranean and the northeast Indian Ocean.

“The Mediterranean is the most contaminated sea in the world, so we expected to find these results,” says Rivas. Marine plastic pollution has increased roughly 10-fbld since 1980, and Rivas says the problem is worsened by inadequate water treatment systems. In parts of India and the southeast Mediterranean, waste water isn’t adequately treated or recycled, she says. This means that microfibers shed by fabrics in washing machines, and larger pieces of rubbish, enter the sea. “It’s possible to introduce management strategies to control these huge threats,” says Rivas.

1How did Rivas and her team conduct the study?

    A.By doing comparative experiments.

B.By analyzing data from previous studies.

C.By determining the forms and colors of plastics.

D.By looking for plastics in global marine animals.

2Why was it unsurprising to find a large amount of white plastic in sea turtles?

A.White plastic looks like the food sea turtles consume.

B.More while plastic was in the sea than that of other colors.

C.White plastic is the most common form of the plastic waste.

D.White microfibers from fabrics were abundant in the oceans.

3What does the underlined word “contaminated” probably mean in the last paragraph?

    A.Researched B.Conserved C.Examined D.Polluted

4In which section of a newspaper may this text appear?

  • 23、   Food experts say washing could spread the germs (细菌) on your turkey in the kitchen sink to nearby food. But it’s been a challenge trying to convince cooks to stop washing uncooked poultry (禽肉). Germs that can make people sick are common in the body of healthy poultry and are legally allowed to be on raw turkey and chicken. The assumption is that nobody eats their poultry raw, and that thorough cooking will kill the germ.

The do-not-wash raw poultry advice from the USDA is relatively new and perhaps hasn’t caught on because it goes against the common belief that washing makes things clean, said Chapman. Benjamin Chapman, a study author and food safety expert at North Carolina State University, said the natural tendency to wash raw poultry goes back at least decades when people relied more on visual clues to spot problems with poultry. Meanwhile, washing hands and surfaces are also important.

But food preparation is a complicated act, and germs from poultry can be spread even if it’s not washed, especially when birds are removed from packaging.

The USDA-funded study stresses that point. Researchers sprayed raw chicken with a harmless strain of E. coli (大肠杆菌) and watched volunteer cooks at test kitchens. Among those who washed their raw chicken, about a quarter ended up spreading the germ to their cabbage. But even some of those who did not wash the chicken got germs on the cabbage. And there are other opportunities for germs to survive on turkeys: melting and cooking.

To ensure a bird is thoroughly cooked, they say to use a thermometer (温度计) to check that the deepest and thickest parts of it have reached 165 degrees. Even after the meal is cooked, you aren’t out of the danger zone. To keep turkeys and other leftovers safe, experts say they should be refrigerated after two hours.

    1People don’t accept USDA’s advice because________.

    A.the advice is relatively new

B.cooks clean the turkey before cooking it

    C.cleaning seems more trustworthy

D.heat can kill most germs and no one eats raw food

2What’s the main idea of Paragraph 4?

A.Germs from chicken can be spread if it is washed

B.Germs from poultry can be spread even if it's not washed

C.Hands and surfaces are easy to get E. coli.

D.Multiple methods should be applied to food to get rid of germs.

3Which way may help to cook a turkey safely?

A.Use a thermometer to check the temperature of the turkey.

B.Keep the turkey away from the cabbage and refrigerator.

C.Wash hands and packages before taking out the turkey.

D.Wash the turkey before it is heated.

4Where is this text most likely from?

    A.A diary B.A novel C.A guidebook D.A magazine

    (WAIKING WATER EXPERIMENT)

Walking Water Science Experiment for Kids

Let's get set up for walking water with a few quick and easy steps the kids can definitely be a part of! We used test tubes for three sets of primary colors. You can use less as long as you have enough to go around with all the colors mixing. First, add red, yellow, and blue food coloring (one color per test tube) in order. Give each test tube a little stir (搅拌)to evenly distribute the color. Try to put the same amount of food coloring in each container. Cut thin strips of white paper towel to fit in the test tubes. Place them into the test tubes. There will be two ends in each tube. Wait and watch what happens. At this point, you can set up a stopwatch to make notes of how long it takes for the colors to meet and mix.

Before you insert the strips, you have the perfect opportunity to make some predictions about what will happen. Have your kids come up with a prediction for their experiment? Will the water walk? You can start the conversation with "What do you think will happen when we put the towels into the water?"

The whole process starts pretty quickly, but it does take a while for the colors to begin to mix with each other. Extend the science activity: pull out the watercolors and do some color mixing art while you wait. Make sure to check on your walking water science experiment every once in a while to see the changes that are constantly taking place. The kids will be amazed at how the water seems to fight against gravity! As the paper towels absorb the colored water, the water travels up the towel strip. It meets up with the other colored water that has traveled up the neighboring strip. Where the primary colors interact, they turn into the secondary colors. Both colors will continue to travel as long as the towel fibers absorb the water.

The experiment is colorful and simple to do! Plus, it is interesting for multiple ages. Older kids should be able to set it up all by themselves and can also use our science journal page to record their results.

【1】What materials are needed for the experiment?

A.Test tubes, food coloring and paper towel.

B.Drinking water, test tubes and a notebook.

C.Food coloring, water cups and a paper cutter.

D.Mixed colors, towel strips and food containers.

    【2】In the experiment, you're expected to ________.

A.add three colors into each container

B.set up a stopwatch from the beginning

C.put colorful towel strips in the test tubes

D.stir each test tube to make the color even

【3】Water in the test tubes can walk because ________.

A.food coloring has the power to take in water

B.towel fibers absorb water and allow it to travel

C.water flows naturally under the influence of gravity

D.colors interact with each other and thus travel easily
