  • 26、   The year 2019 saw the end of the hit sitcom The Big Bang Theory. Now, another popular comedy, Modern Family, follows in their footsteps. After 11 seasons the final episode aired on April 8, bringing an end to a sitcom “widely recognized as one of the funniest and most decorated sitcoms of this century”, according to EOnline.

Hitting our screens in 2009, the show claimed 22 Emmys in total, an American award that recognizes excellence in television. At its peak the show attracted over 9 million viewers for its relatable family dynamic, loveable characters and mockumentary (伪纪录片) style. In this format, characters can convey their own thoughts and feelings directly to the audience via a short sit-down interview.

Over the course of the series, fans have witnessed the Pritchett-Dunphy-Tucker clan (家族), an extended Los Angeles family, overcome the trials and tribulations of any modern family, including death, adoption and mental health.

The big family’s highs and lows have made it so relatable that we see them as part of our own family and care about their stories. From fights between siblings (兄弟姐妹) to parental disagreement about children’s education, the show, despite being a comedy, deals with serious modern issues that are familiar to the audience.

Despite its success, showrunners  admitted that the sitcom had been running on fumes (后劲不足的) during the last few seasons. The final episode went as expected, with the growing branches of each family going their separate ways following one giant on-screen embrace involving every cast member.

As the camera cut to each departing family member, Jay Pritchett, the patriarch (大家长) of the family, expressed an important theme of the show. “Life is full of change. I learned a long time ago you can fight it, or you can try to make the best of it. And that’s a whole lot easier if you’ve got people helping you face whatever life throws at you,” he said emotionally.

Just as the final episode concluded, fans were treated to one last heartfelt moment. As each family switched off their porch (门廊) light, Claire asks Phil (a couple in the show) what they’ll do now that their kids have grown up and moved on. Phil said, “Leave the porch light on – they come back,” a subtle (巧妙的) hint that the show might someday return.

1How can we define Modern Family?

A.A mockumentary series about an extended family’s history.

B.Sit-down interviews about people’s emotional problems.

C.A comedy encouraging people to adapt to changes.

D.A sitcom about funny family stories and social issues.

2Why has Modern Family appealed to the audience so much?

A.It applies a variety of shooting formats.

B.It won the most Emmy Awards.

C.Its characters, plot and style are quite relatable.

D.It teaches them how to deal with challenges in life.

3What does the underlined phrase “trials and tribulations” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?

    A.fears B.problems

    C.changes D.boundaries

4What does Modern Family convey to us, according to Jay Pritchett?

    A.Parenting and education are important.

B.Fighting is the best way to handle changes.

C.Life will be easier if you are able to get help.

D.Changes in life shape a harmonious family.

  • 27、   By 11:00, Gopamma knew something was wrong. Her husband, Hanutha, should have returned from collecting firewood an hour before.Gopamma sent for her son, who gathered a search party and headed to Bandipur Tiger Reserve, a nearby national park in south-western India. Just inside the forest, they discovered Hanutha’s half-eaten remains. The tiger that killed him was still sitting next to the body.

In the face of her husband’s death, Gopamma struggled not only with grief but economic hardship. Her son had to drop out of university. “My life was much better when my husband was alive,” she says. “My older son could have studied, but now both of my sons have to work. I feel insecure and dependent.”

Despite all this, Gopamma feels no hate toward the tiger that killed her husband. Like many Hindus in India, she views humans and creatures, each with an equal right to existence. Her husband’s death, she says, has nothing to do with the fact that the government is trying to save tigers: “This was my fate.”

Rural Indians are unique in the world for their high tolerance for co-existing with potentially deadly wildlife. “You don’t find this in other cultures,” says Ullas, a biologist at the Wildlife Conservation Society and a leading expert on tigers. “If this kind of thing happened in Montana or Brazil, they’d wipe out everything the next day.”

The country holds just 25% of total tiger habitat, but accounts for 70% of all remaining wild tigers, or around 3,000 animals today.Success does not come without cost, however. They still have a lot of difficulties with tigers breaking into human-dominated places in certain parts of India, livestock(牲畜) are killed and sometimes so are people.

Some animal activists think that there are too few tigers left in the wild ,so even one shouldn’t be killed.Tigers are treasures, we’d better live with them together.

1Which of the following words can replace the underlined word “remains” in the first paragraph?

    A.ashes B.body C.rest D.flesh

2How was Gopamma’s life after her husband’s death?

    A.She suffered financial difficulties.

B.Her life was much better than before.

C.She hated the tiger and was in deep sorrow.

D.She became independent and supported her sons with their studies.

3The sentence “You don’t find this in other cultures.” in the fourth paragraph implies ______.

A.Other cultures keep tigers as pets.

B.Other cultures can kill tigers casually.

C.Rural Indians can bear the killing caused by the tiger.

D.People wipe out the tigers once they see them in Montana or Brazil.

4What can we know from the article ?

A.Gopamma’s two sons used to study in the university.

B.Tigers often break into indians’ houses and kill the villagers.

C.Gopamma knew something was wrong in the early morning.

D.Hanutha was found killed in the forest in a national park.

  • 29、   Students from the San Diego Jewish Academy in the US broke the Guinness World Record when they managed to make more than 800 sandwiches in three minutes on April 1.

However, the students were doing more than just setting a world record. They gave the sandwiches to the homeless and so learned a lesson about helping their community.

“We want our students to know it’s not enough to talk about changing the world,” said school principal Chaim Heller. “It’s not enough to raise money to change the world. You have to use your hands and feet.”

The world record for making the most sandwiches in three minutes had been 490. But the 550 students from kindergarten to 12th grade may have broken that record by making 868 sandwiches in the school gym.

The sandwiches were given to the Alpha Project, which served them later that day to homeless people and low-income residents around Alpha Square.

Students found 52 tables waiting for them in the school gym, each laid out with slices of bread, lettuce, sliced tomatoes and American cheese. Forty-five parent volunteers were on hand to help, and a note on each table told the students what to put in each sandwich – two slices of cheese, one slice of tomato and one piece of lettuce.

The gym’s scoreboard was set at three minutes. A countdown started, a bell rang and tables throughout the gym became a flurry of (一阵忙乱) fast-moving cheese and bread.

The youngest students made one sandwich each while older ones made two. Within two minutes, almost all of the students had stepped back from their table. They waved their gloved hands in the air to show that they had finished.

“These types of experiences not only bring together our school community, but help students learn that everyone can make a sandwich to help those in need,” said Heller. “We want our students to see themselves as leaders who can make a difference in people’s lives.”

1Why did students from the San Diego Jewish Academy make 868 sandwiches?

A.To set a Guinness World Record.

B.To raise money to help poor people.

C.To help their community through their action.

D.To put their cooking knowledge into practice

2What do we know about the sandwich-making event?

A.Students had to prepare the ingredients themselves.

B.The students were asked to make two sandwiches each.

C.Parents were not allowed to help their kids.

D.Most of the students finished their work ahead of time.

3What did Heller think of the activity?

A.It was a waste of study time.

    B.It helped students to learn.

C.It failed to achieve its purpose.

D.It interested many students in cooking.

Why your Password May Not Be As Safe As It Seems?  Does “qaz2ws” strike you as a nice safe password? What about “adgjmptw”? An analysis has found them to be among the passwords that are most 1 used, which of course means they are not secure at all.

When ten million passwords were leaked on to the internetthey appeared to 2that attempts by internet security experts to make us improve our password strength had been successful, even if, in the specific case of the leaked passwords, they are also completely pointless.

While many of the passwords were still single words, such as “password”there was also a clear attempt by many to make them harder to3. The problem was that people seemed to do so in the same way.

“Users are becoming slightly more 4what makes a password strong,” explained WP Engine, an internet company that performed the analysis. “For instance, adding a number or two at the end of a text phrase. That makes it better, right?”

But 5no. They found that almost half a million passwords did this and in 20 percent of those all people did was put the number “1” at the end.

Perhaps this is why some companies are now trying to move gradually beyond passwords. Yahoo! is giving users the option to 6 their mobile phone with an account, having a single use passwords texted to it each time they want to log on.

Although the serviced is voluntary, Dylan Casey an executive at Yahoo!said that it was “the first step to7passwords”. He said it was a(n)8that it was increasingly hard for people to remember all the passwords they had. “I don’t think we, as an industry, have done a good enough job of putting ourselves in the shoes of the people using our products,” he said.

It would certainly be a more sensible strategy than same people’s improving upon “password” by using “password” or“tran5p053d numb3r5 f0r 133tr3r5”.

“We are, for the most partpredictably9when it comes to choosing passwords, despite a decade of warnings from password strength checkers during sign-ups” said WP Engine. “We love taking a(n) 10, and so do password crackers.

Technology is forever changing the way we get our news. Many people now get a lot of their news on electronic devices, instead of traditional media, such as newspapers, television or radio. An increasing number of people also report turning to social media for information.

Now, there is a new technology that could greatly change the way we get the news: computer-created news readers. Recently, China launched what it called the worlds first artificial intelligence, or AI news presenters.

The news readers, supported by machine learning technology, are based on two real-life Chinese newsmen. One is able to present newscasts in English, the other, in Mandarin Chinese. Report said machine learning was used to examine video images and sounds of the two newsmen. Similar technology has been used to create video products known as “deepfake” videos. A deepfake is a video that looks real, but was electronically changed. Such videos can make people appear to say things they never said.

It's said that the AI presenters will be a great improvement to the news team because they “can work 24 hours a day” on its website and on social media. One of the presenters even promised to “work tirelessly” to keep people informed. Some machine learning experts said the system showed off China’s latest progress in voice recognition, text-to-speech technology and data analysis.

Some companies have experimented with similar technology for possible use in news operations. Britain’s BBC recently released a video that used machine learning to make it look like one of its news readers speaking different languages. The London-based company that developed the system says its goal is to “remove the language barrier” for many different kinds of video across the internet. Also, Amazon is working on Alexa smart speaker system to create a special news reader voice. Amazon is reportedly preparing to launch Alexas news reader voice in the near future.
