二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   One of my second graders, Debbie, had been unusually quiet in my Family Living class. When I asked her if something was wrong, she replied, “I don't feel like talking today. I'm sad. My best friend's parents are going to get divorced(离婚的). Her father moved out of the house. I told her I would share my dad with her, but I know it isn't the same. ”

I was surprised to learn that almost every child in my primary grade Family Living classes seemed to have some personal acquaintance (了解)with divorce—through friends of the family, neighbors, relatives, or much closer to home—their own parents. For many of them, divorce was just a normal part of life. Emily once said, “I want to be a doctor or nurse when I grow up, so after I get married and divorced, I'll be able to support myself. Then there was Billy, who stated, “When my mom gets married again next week, we're all going on a honeymoon.

Sometimes parents fight about the kids," said Kimberly. “My parents are divorced and my mom keeps pulling on one of my arms and my dad pulls the other. ” How sad, I thought, that a child would feel like her parents were actually pulling her apart because they each wanted more of her than the other should. “I hate that my parents are divorced! exclaimed Greg. “It's all my fault, too. I bite my nails too much. ”

Lori tried to look at things from a more positive perspective. “Your mother and father got mad at each other, but it doesn't mean they got mad at you," said Lori. “Lori is right," I said. Sometimes a husband and wife realize that they no longer love each other and decide it will be best for the whole family if they don't live together anymore. But that doesn't mean they stop loving their children, and it certainly doesn't mean that it is the children's fault!

“Maybe your mom and dad will change their minds and get undevoured,” Eric told Greg. “Then you can all be together again. ” Greg shook his head. “No, that won't happen. ” And then, with a thoughtful expression on his face, he said, “You know something? Divorce is like a cake. You cut it in half and it's separated forever. ”

    1Why did Debbie feel sad?

A.Debbie’s best friend’s parents were going to get divorced.

    B.Debbie’s parents were getting divorced.

C.Her father moved out of the house.

D.She didn't want to share her dad with others.

2What can we learn from Paragraph 4?

A.It's the children's fault that leads to parents' divorce.

B.It's acceptable for parents to get divorced if they don't love each other.

C.Parents usually get mad at the kid when they get mad with each other.

D.Parents usually ignore their children when they plan to get divorced.

  • 27、   I’m sitting in my kitchen in London, trying to figure out a text message from my brother. He lives in our home country of Germany. We speak German to each other, a language that's rich in strange words, but I've never heard this one before: fremdschämen.

The experience gets me to consider: can we lose our mother language? Most immigrants (移民)know what it’s like to be not as good at their mother language as before. The process seems obvious: the longer you are away, the more your language suffers. But it’s not quite so straightforward. It turns out that how long you've been away doesn't always matter. Socializing with other native speakers abroad can worsen your own native skills. And emotional factors like trauma(精神创伤) can be the biggest factor of all.

In children, the phenomenon of language attrition (语言磨蚀)is somewhat easier to explain since their brains are generally more flexible and adaptable. Until the age of about 12, a person’s language skills are relatively easy to change. Studies on international adopters have found that even nine-year-olds can almost completely forget their first language when they are removed from their country of birth.

But in adults, the first language is unlikely to disappear entirely except in extreme circumstances. For example, Monika Schmid analyzed the German of elderly German-Jewish wartime refugees(难民) in the UK and the US. The main factor that influenced their language skills wasn't how long they had been abroad or how old they were when they left. It was how much trauma they had experienced as victims. Those who left Germany in the early days of Nazi occupation, before the worst violence, tended to speak better German – despite having been abroad the longest. Those who left later, tended to speak German with difficulty or not at all.

“It seemed very clearly a result of this trauma”, says Schmid. “Even though German was the language of childhood, home and family, it was also the language of painful memories”. The most traumatized refugees had held them back. As one of them said: “I feel that Germany betrayed me. America is my country, and English is my language.”

1What does the first paragraph serve as?

    A.A comment B.A background

    C.An explanation D.An introduction

2What do paragraph 4 and 5 mainly talk about?

    A.How two languages coexist

B.The way to deal with adult’s trauma

C.The reasons behind adult’s language attrition.

D.Whether trauma leads to adult’s language attrition.

3Why does trauma cause a person's mother language to disappear?

A.Because he can’t remember his mother language.

B.Because his ability to communicate is affected.

C.Because his country is far from him .

D.Because he chooses to escape from bad experiences.

4What is the best title for the passage?

A.Where does your native language come from?

B.Will you lose your native language?

C.How does trauma affect your first language?

D.How far are you from your mother tongue

  • 28、I first discovered the Little Free Library concept while being on a 2015 vacation in Santa Barbara, California. I fell in love with the idea of free literature-sharing boxes posted at the edges of parks and along sidewalks in neighbourhoods. And because our home was already filled with mountainous piles of books, my husband wasn’t the least bit surprised when I suggested starting a Little Free Library of our own. In our garden shed (棚) , we filled the shelves with books from our personal collection. Over the next two months, strangers discovered our Little Free Library and began their regular visit.

My love of reading dates back to 1970, when I studied in a three-room primary schoolhouse on a dirt road. One day, I accidentally came to the basement library and I was fascinated by the picture books. Unfortunately, the books were later thrown away when the school discovered the basement was full of mould (霉). Happily, weeks later, a truck arrived with a trailer—which, with the help of our county’s public library, had been transformed into a paradise (乐土) for those who enjoyed reading. Now I still remember the floor-to-ceiling shelves and the carpeted benches in it. Every time I left, I wrote my name on several sign-out cards, which were filled with names of children from neighbouring schools. We liked the same books and, although we never met, I considered them friends.

At the beginning of the first COVID-19 lockdown, our Little Free Library began to include children’s stories. I witnessed mothers lifting their children for a look into the library. Walkers included our street in their route so they could check for new offerings. Some folks routinely drove from several blocks away to visit. From time to time, visitors filled shelves with literary fiction, romances, poetry and a range of non-fiction. I smiled when people met me in the yard and commented that our Little Free Library was like a bird feeder.

We remain grateful that we have kept our Little Free Library open. It has become an alternative means of creating a community of people with mutual regard for humanity and the written word. We are together even when apart.

【1】What inspired the author to start the Little Free Library?

    A.Her large collection of books.

    B.An experience during a vacation.

D.Strangers’ visit to her garden shed.

【2】From the passage, we can learn that________.

A.neighbouring schools donated books to the Little Free Library

B.the author’s enthusiasm for reading started from her childhood

C.children wrote their names on the sign-out cards to meet friends

D.the county’s public library became a perfect place for book lovers

【3】People considered the Little Free Library a bird feeder because________.

    A.it provided food for thought

    B.it attracted birds for shelter

    C.visitors could feed birds here

    D.people could exchange books here

  • 29、   Skeptics are a strange lot. Some of them refuse to admit the serious threat of human activities to the environment, and they are tired of people who disagree with them. Those people, say skeptics, spread nothing but bad news about the environment. The “eco-guilt” brought on by the discouraging news about our planet gives rise to the popularity of skeptics as people search for more comforting worldviews.

Perhaps that explains why a new book by Bjorn Lomborg received so much popularity. That book, The Skeptic Environmentalist, declares that it measures the “real state of the world” as fine. Of course, another explanation is the deep pockets of some big businesses with special interests. Indeed, Mr. Lomborg’s views are similar to those of some industry-funded organizations, which start huge activities through the media to confuse the public about issues like global warming.

So it was strange to see Mr. Lomborg’s book go largely unchallenged in the media though his beliefs were contrary to most scientific opinions. One national newspaper in Canada ran a number of articles and reviews full of words of praise, even with the conclusion that “After Lomborg, the environmental movement will begin to die down.”

Such one-sided views should have immediately been challenged. But only a different review appeared in Nature, a respected science magazine with specific readership. The review remarked that Mr. Lomborg’s “preference for unexamined materials is incredible(不可信的)”.

A critical (批判的)eye is valuable, and the media should present information in such a way that could allow people to make informed decisions. Unfortunately, that is often inaccessible as blocked by the desire to be shocking or to defend some special interests. People might become half-blinded before a world partially exhibited by the media. That’s a shame, because matters concerning the health of the planet are far too important to be treated lightly.

1According to the passage, which of the following may be regarded as “skeptics”?

A.People who agree on the popularity of “eco-guilt”.

B.People who disbelieve the serious situation of our planet.

C.People who dislike the harmful effect of human activities.

D.People who spread comforting news to protect our environment.

2Which of the following can be a reason for the popularity of Lomborg’s book?

A.Some big businesses intend to protect their own interests.

B.The book challenges views about the fine state of the world.

C.The author convinces people to speak comforting worldviews.

    D.Industry–funded media present confusing information.

3The author mentioned the review in Nature in order to____.

    A.voice a different opinion B.find fault with Lomborg’s book

C.challenge the authority of the media D.point out the value of scientific views

4What is the author’s main purpose in writing the passage?

A.To encourage the skeptics to have a critical eye.

B.To warn the public of the danger of half–blindness with reviews.

C.To blame the media’s lack of responsibility in presenting information.

D.To show the importance of presenting overall information by the media.

    My daughter

(A story told by a father, a famous actor)

My wife and I only had the one child. We had Amy.

I see her as my best friend. I think she’d always come to me first if she had a problem. We have the same sense of humor, and share interests. 1 I don’t mind animals, she’s completely fascinated with them, and she has always had dogs, cats, horses, and goldfish in her life.

We were 2 (close) when she was about four, which I think is a lovely age for a child. They know the parents best, and don’t have outside contacts. She must have grown up suddenly when she went to school, because I remember her growing away from her family slightly. Any father who has a teenager daughter comes across an extraordinary collection of people, and there seemed to be an endless stream of strange young men 3 (come) through our house. By the time I learned their names they 4 (go) away and I had to start learning a new lot.

I wanted more than anything else for her to be happy in 5 she was doing, and I was prepared to pull strings to help her on her way. When she left a good school she decided she wanted to become an actress so I got her into drama school. It wasn’t to her liking so she joined a theatre group and began doing bits and pieces in films. She was doing well, but then gave it up. She probably found it boring. Then she took up social work, and finally went to work 6a designer and he became her husband. And that’s really the story of her life. She must be happy with him—they’re always together.

We have such similar tastes in books and music 7 I used to take her to see an opera, which is my big passion. However, I don’t think she likes it very much. She doesn’t come with me anymore.

I don’t think she’s a big television watcher. She knows when I’m on the television, and she 8 watch, but I don’t know. It’s not the kind of thing she tells me.

We’re very grateful for Amy. She’s a good daughter as daughters go. We’re looking forward to being grandparents.

Why Cold weather Causes So many Flight Cancellation?

Each year, about 60,000 flights get canceled because of bad winter weather, which costs airlines and airports an estimated $3 billion. But it’s not the freezing cold temperatures that cause problems for planes. After all, 1 jets fly 10 kilometers up, where temperatures hover around -50 degrees Celsius.

In fact, planes 2 in cold weather, since cold air is denser and leads to better thrust. Clearly, the real problem isn’t what’s going on up there. It’s what’s happening on the ground.

When a 3 polar vortex (极地涡旋) struck the Midwestern US in January 2019, temperatures dropped to -40 degrees Celsius and airline canceled 3,000 flights nationwide. In these situations, when temperatures start 4, everything slows down. Cargo doors can freeze up, along with the nozzles that pump fuel into planes, which delays the 5 process.

Even the plane itself can freeze over. Just a quarter-inch - thick layer of ice on a plane can disrupt the way air flows over its wings.

Les Westbrooks: The number one reason, I would say, that the reason flights get delayed in cold weather is going to be because there’s some kind of frozen precipitation, from frost to snow to a sheet of ice, adhering to the aircraft, adhering to the wings of the aircraft 6.

That’s Les Westbrooks, a retired airline pilot and an associate professor of aeronautical science at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. He says that 7, these planes are “de-iced” - but this also delays takeoff. The crew can spray the plane with a special hot water/ glycol mixture. It can take around 40 minutes to de-ice large passenger airplanes, so planes often have to wait “their turn” for the de-icing station, which, of course, can trigger more delays.

And ice on the runway, of course, creates another set of 8. In 2014, a plane at JFK skidded off an icy runway and into a mound of snow, leading to an hours-long shutdown at the airport. And even though crews can remove ice from the runway, scraping it off the pavement can lead to potholes (坑洞) and other 9, which makes takeoffs and landings more dangerous. And of course, snow and freezing rain on the ground can affect visibility to the point where officials have to decide it’s not safe to fly at all.

But if ice and snow aren’t the problem in these extremely cold temperatures, it’s usually another factor: people.

Les Westbrooks: The airplane flies at high altitudes, -60 degrees. It’s made to do that. Humans are not made to be outside in -60 degrees weather. And so the human factor becomes a big, big factor, when it becomes extremely cold.

Baggage handlers, aircraft fuelers, and mechanics all have to stay warm. Some airports, like O’Hare in Chicago, set up heated shelters for their employees. Of course, with everyone taking breaks to warm up, not as much gets done, which leads to even more delays and cancellations. Passengers start missing their 10 flights, and that, along with passengers who can’t make it to the airport due to bad road conditions, leads to half-empty planes.

In fact, many airlines might preemptively cancel flights before bad weather even hits. So, in the end, you can still blame cold weather for cancelling your flight.

Tablets are really useful devices, but their big screens always make them a burden to carry around without a bag. Wouldn’t it be great if there were a phone with the powers of a tablet that could be folded up and fit 1 into the hand?

Now something like a tablet-shaped but fold-able phone is about to become 2. In February, South Korean electronics company Samsung and China’s Huawei both unveiled fold-able phones Galaxy Fold and Huawei Mate X 3. Mobile phone use has entered the “fold-able future”, The Verge noted.

The technology could change our lives in significant ways. These devices, due to their 4 screens, give us the larger screens we want. Meanwhile, they still fit easily into the pocket. As USA Today noted, they’re “the 5 of a small tablets and smart-phone, all in a single device”.

The technology could 6 other devices too. For example, we could make TVs that stick to walls like posters, or fold up easily to hide away in drawers. In crowded modem cities, they will help us to 7 available space.

In a keynote address, Samsung’s senior vice president of mobile product marketing, Justin Denison, called the fold-able screen “the 8 for the smart-phone of tomorrow.” “It’s a balank canvas for us to do something beautiful together,” he said.

So is there nothing to stand in the way of the fold-able future?

According to tech news website Android authority, the necessary displays were difficult to produce. In 2012, nine out of every to OLED screens produced were 9. Today, that 10 percent rate has been improved to between 50 and 90 percent. However, at present these fold-able devices are expensive. For example, the price of Huawei Mate X is 17,500 RMB. That’s a price that may 10 the majority of people.

But if the fold-able device isn’t going to change the world overnight, there is no doubt that it is coming.

Patrick Moor-head, an industry analyst told The Verge, “Few are debating if fold-able or roll-able mobile displays are the future of smart-phones; the only question is when and by whom.”

My friend Jack had a birthday party recently and I wanted to make him something special to show how much our friendship meant to me. I pulled out the craft box and spread everything out on the table: markers, paints, seasheils, and construction paper. I stared and stared but couldn’t think of what to make.

Just then, my cat Charlie leaped on a pile of paper. The paper, and Charlie, slid across the table. I thought, “It looks like Charlie’s skateboarding (滑滑板) Skateboard! That’s it.”

I ran to my room and found an old photo of Jack and me with our first skateboards.

I worked all afternoon on the coolest picture frame ever. It was shaped and colored just like the skateboard Jack had in the photo.

I spoke to myself as I applied the final coat of paint. “I bet this will be Jack’s favorite present!”

When I arrived at the party, I set my gift behind all the others so Jack would open it last. The whole time we were playing games, I kept glancing over at it. Then Jack’s grandmother brought out the cake. Jack blew out the candles. Finally, it was time to open presents. Jack opened a book, a paint set, and a baseball cap. The next-to-last thing was a long heavy box.

“I got two of the same things for my birthday,” Justin told Jack. “So I’m giving one of them to you.”

Jack opened the box and pulled out a super-nice skateboard. “No way!” he shouted. “This is exactly the one I’ve been wanting. Let’s go outside and try it!”

“Um, Jack,” I said, “aren’t you going to open my gift?”

“Oh, of course!” He ripped (撕开) open the present, not even noticing the funny cartoons I’d drawn on the wrapping paper. “Hey, I remember this photo. Thanks, Arizona!” He put down the picture frame, grabbed the new skateboard, and called, “Come on, everyone! We can all take turns!”

    Everyone ran outside—everyone except me.

“I can’t find the present you gave me, and do you remember where I put it?” Jack said.
