  • 22、Like many constructions, it started small. But now thousands of children with autism (自闭症) are making friends and learning social skills by playing a special version of online building game Minecraft.

Stuart Duncan got the idea through a popular blog he ran about his own experiences with autism as well as bringing up a son with autism. Other parents with autistic children started telling him that their kids were crazy about a game that let them explore a randomly generated wilderness. However, despite loving the game, many of the children were being bullied (霸凌) by other players.

So, in 2013, Duncan, a web developer in Canada, set up a server to run a version of Minecraft only for children with autism and their families. He thought the invite-only server would attract 10 or 20 people, but hundreds requested to join in the first few days. Now, almost three years later, running the special version, Autcraft, is his full-time job. The community has nearly 7000 members, along with a team of engineers to help manage its many activities. “Parents see such a benefit for themselves and their children,” says Duncan.

In Minecraft, you use blocks of materials like wood and stone to build whatever you like. “This is a great way for them to play a game they love, but also have a social experience,” says Kate Ringland from the University of California, who has spent 60 hours inside this virtual world, watching how the kids play and chat to one another. “It’s giving an alternative way for these kids to express themselves and communicate without the stresses of the physical life stuff.”

Everyday social situations can be challenging for autistic children, who may struggle to pick up on social signals or understand another person’s viewpoint. Duncan thinks Minecraft removes the pressures typical of the real world. There is no noisy or unfamiliar environment to distract (使分心) you, no pressure to track the other person’s facial expressions or worry about eye contact. Joining a community like Autcraft could be a good first step to feeling less socially anxious and more engaged.

【1】What inspired Duncan to run Autcraft?

    A.Online Bullying.

    B.His son’s request.

    C.Some parents’ advice.

    D.His blog about autism.

【2】What can we learn about Autcraft from Paragraph 3?

    A.It has about 7,000 engineers.

    B.It was an unexpected success.

C.It helped parents play with their kids.

D.It remains accessible to all the people.

【3】How does Minecraft help children according to Duncan?

    A.By teaching communication skills.

B.By solving their real world problems.

    C.By explaining other people’s viewpoints.

    D.By offering stress-free social experiences.

【4】What is the best title for the text?

A.How Can We Deal With Autism?

    B.What Makes Minecraft So Famous?

C.Why Do Online Games Benefit Children?

D.How Does Autcraft Help Autistic Children?

  • 23、When you say the word donkey, what things come to your mind? A few people might say they’re cute, but the majority think they’re stubborn, dumb and all-round less capable than their horse relatives.

However, this wasn’t the case for a recently unearthed ancient Chinese noblewoman who was unexpectedly found buried with her donkeys. Published in the journal Antiquity in March, Chinese archaeologists (考古学家) first discovered the tomb in Xi’an, Shaanxi, in 2012. The team examined the remains and identified the body as Cui Shi, a Tang Dynasty high-born lady who died in 878 AD.

Speaking to Science Magazine in 2012, the study’s co-author, Fiona Marshall, said the finding caused confusion as “donkeys … are not associated with high-status people”.

However, following years of further research, the team discovered artworks and artifacts that showed a sport known as “Lvju”. This was similar to modern-day polo (马球) and was popular among noble (高贵的) women at the time. They preferred to use donkeys instead of full-sized horses for safety reasons, due to their smaller size and slower speed.

Speaking to CNN, Marshall later said, “Historical documents also showed that ladies of the late Tang court loved to play donkey polo.”

At that time in Chinese history, animals were often placed in tombs so that they could be used for a specific purpose in the afterlife. The study determined that Cui Shi likely requested that her beloved donkeys be buried with her, so that she could continue her favorite sport after death. In total, three donkeys were found inside her tomb with riding gear (装备), including stirrups (马镫). “This context provides evidence that the donkeys in her tomb were for polo, not transport,” lead author Hu Songmei of the Shaanxi Academy of Archaeology told Science Magazine.

Before the study, it was believed that donkeys were only used to carry loads, but now it may be time to see them as a sign of achieving high social status(地位), well, in ancient times.

【1】What do most people think of donkeys, according to the text?

A.They are as adorable(可爱的) as horses.

B.They are stubborn and not so capable.

C.They were necessary in ancient sports.

D.They were a sign of high social status.

【2】Why did Fiona Marshall feel confused when she discovered the donkeys?

A.She didn’t connect donkeys with nobles.

B.She hadn’t seen donkeys in ancient tombs before.

C.She didn’t expect to find donkeys in a woman’s tomb.

D.She didn’t understand why animals were in human tombs.

【3】What do we know about the sport “Lvju” from the text?

    A.Horses were preferred in Lvju.

B.Lvju was similar to modern-day soccer.

C.Lvju was popular among common people.

D.Donkeys were preferred in the sport for safety.

【4】The donkeys were found in the tomb of Cui Shi probably because _______.

A.she intended to use them for transport after death

B.her family didn’t want her to be lonely after death

C.she wanted to continue to play Lvju after death

D.noble women needed donkeys to maintain their dignity

  • 24、The curb cut (下斜路缘). It’s a convenience that most of us rarely, if ever, notice. Yet, without it, daily life might be a lot harder—in more ways than one. Pushing a baby stroller onto the curb, skateboarding onto a sidewalk or taking a full grocery cart from the sidewalk to your car—all these tasks are easier because of the curb cut.

But it was created with a different purpose in mind.

It’s hard to imagine today, but back in the 1970s, most sidewalks in the United States ended with a sharp drop-off. That was a big deal for people in wheelchairs because there were no ramps (斜坡) to help them move along city blocks without assistance. According to one disability rights leader, a six-inch curb “might as well have been Mount Everest”. So, activists from Berkeley, California, who also needed wheelchairs, organized a campaign to create tiny ramps at intersections to help people dependent on wheels move up and down curbs independently.

I think about the “curb cut effect” a lot when working on issues around health equity (公平). The first time I even heard about the curb cut was in a 2017 Stanford Social Innovation Review piece by PolicyLink CEO Angela Blackwell. Blackwell rightly noted that many people see equity “as a zero-sum game.” Basically, that there is a “prejudiced societal suspicion that intentionally supporting one group hurts another.” What the curb cut effect shows though, Blackwell said, is that “when society creates the circumstances that allow those who have been left behind to participate and contribute fully, everyone wins.”

There are multiple examples of this principle at work. For example, investing in policies that create more living-wage jobs or increase the availability of affordable housing certainly benefits people in communities that have limited options. But, the action also empowers those people with opportunities for better health and the means to become contributing members of society—and that benefits everyone. Even the football huddle (围成一团以秘密商讨) was initially created to help deaf football players at Gallaudet College keep their game plans secret from opponents who could have read their sign language. Today, it’s used by every team to shield the opponent from learning about game-winning strategies.

So, next time you cross the street, or roll your suitcase through a crosswalk or ride your bike directly onto a sidewalk—think about how much the curb cut, that change in design that broke down walls of exclusion for one group of people at a disadvantage, has helped not just that group, but all of us.

【1】By “might as well have been Mount Everest” (paragraph 3), the disability rights leader implies that a six-inch curb may become ________.

A.as famous as the world’s highest mountain

    B.an almost impassable barrier

    C.a connection between people

    D.a most unforgettable matter

【2】According to Angela Blackwell, many people believe that ________.

A.it’s fair to give the disadvantaged more help than others

B.it’s impossible to have everyone be treated equally

C.it’s necessary to go all out to help the disabled

D.it’s not worthwhile to promote health equity

【3】Which of the following examples best illustrates the “curb cut effect” principle?

A.Spaceflight designs are applied to life on earth.

B.Four great inventions of China spread to the west.

C.Christopher Columbus discovered the new world.

D.Classic literature got translated into many languages.

【4】What conclusion can be drawn from the passage?

A.Everyday items are originally invented for people with disabilities.

B.Everyone in a society should pursue what is in his or her interest.

C.A disability rights leader changed the life of his fellow men.

D.Caring for disadvantaged groups may finally benefit all.
