  • 21、Kenny Eating House is always crowded in the late afternoons right up to midnight. You will see many people standing around the tables. 【1】 Once there is the slightest indication that the customers are leaving their table, you will see a few people diving for it. The victor will stand at the table proudly waving his relatives or friends over, while the losers will be down in the mouth.

【2】 You next have to get the attention of the busy waiters rushing about to attend to the customers. You will usually hear the words ‘hot water’ being shouted out as they pass, even if they are not holding any such thing! 【3】In between trying to catch the attention of the waiters and looking through the menu, you will hear customers complaining about the slow service.

Once the waiter comes to take your orders, he is impatient. Sometimes, these waiters would just walk away from indecisive customers and the latter would have to work hard at getting some attention again. Usually, the waiters shout the orders out to the cooks located deep in the kitchen. 【4】

Whenever the crowd gets too thick, the waiters will ask customers to share their tables with those standing. When the tables are shared by two different groups of people, the loudness becomes incredibly deafening. With plates clanking and people talking loudly, you need to shout to be heard. 【5】 The hardworking waiters can finally sit down for a chat or have their cigarettes. • 22、   The cheerful smiles and legendary strength of the Sherpas(夏尔巴人) have been an essential part of Mount Everest climbing expeditions(探险) from the very beginning. Indeed, very few significant successes have been achieved without them.

When Western mountaineers first set their sights on the world’s highest peak, they found in the Sherpas a people ideally suited to the hardship of high-altitude climbing, unfailingly positive, stout at altitude, and seemingly resistant to cold.

Sherpas did not venture into the high peaks until European mountaineers began arriving to climb in the world’s greatest mountain range. Mount Everest, known as Chomolungma or “Goddess Mother of the Land” to the Sherpas, was long considered as a living place of the gods where humans were not allowed to go.

Although Everest now sees many a human footprint, the Sherpas still regard the mountain as a holy place. All modern expeditions begin with a Puja ceremony in which Sherpas and other team members leave offerings and pay respect to the gods of the mountain, hoping to remain in their good graces throughout the climb.

Sherpas were first employed as porters, tasked with carrying large amounts of equipment to supply the military-style expeditions of the day. The early climbers were amazed at the strength of these people, from the fittest of mature men to the young and elderly. In addition to their heavy loads, some of the women even carried along their babies. The whole troop of Sherpas slept outside, using only rocks for shelter, as temperatures dropped well below freezing.

Stronger Sherpas soon graduated from porter status and began to undertake challenging climbing. Those who distinguished themselves were awarded the Tiger Medal, and many desired this honor and the higher pay rate it afforded. Despite the potential dangers, the Sherpa people remained enthusiastic about taking part in Everest expeditions, which even then were becoming an important source of income for a poor mountain folk.

1Sherpas didn’t go into the high peaks before Europeans’ arrival mainly because ________.

A.they enjoyed staying at low altitudes B.they were short of proper equipment

C.they were unaware of their potentials D.they considered the mountain as holy

2By mentioning the “rocks” in Paragraph 5, the writer emphasizes _______.

A.the intelligence of the Sherpas B.the challenges for the climbers

C.the physical ability of the Sherpas D.the wild landscape of Mount Everest

3Which of the following can best describe the Sherpas according to the text?

A.Talented for high-altitude climbing. B.Adventurous and crazy about wealth.

C.Generous and willing to help climbers. D.Professional in treating altitude sickness.

  • 23、   Energy drinks aren’t technically a “food”. That’s not to trash them — it’s just a fact, and an important one at that. The Food & Drug Administration regulates all products defined as food to ensure they’re safe for human consumption. Coffee drinks and soda, for instance, aren’t allowed to be too high in caffeine in case they cause heart problems. But energy drinks are classified as supplements, which means they’re unregulated. Hence, manufacturers are free to add as much caffeine inside a single can as they please. They can even mix caffeine with other stimulants (兴奋剂) in such a way that could cause cardiovascular or nervous system problems.

That’s why physicians have been trying to investigate what the health effects of these caffeinated drinks might be. A new study showing that a single drink can diminish blood vessel (血管) function is making headlines, but similar findings have been increasing for years now.

A lot of the concern about these drinks comes from their high concentrations of stimulants. It’s entirely possible to overdose on caffeine alone, and in combination with guarana, another stimulant, smaller amounts might have severe effects. Overdosing on caffeine doesn’t necessarily result in death, but it can cause heart palpitations (心悸), nausea, vomiting, and hypertension. The WHO study also reports that adults who consume energy drinks may be increasing their risk of hypertension and type 2 diabetes.

Despite the WHO’s recommendation that caffeine content be limited per beverage, energy drinks in the U. S. are still totally unregulated and will remain that way unless they get reclassified as a food. They may not be dangerous in small quantities, but nothing about them is healthy. Switch to coffee or tea, both of which will energize you in the morning and will be much harder to overdo it with. Or you could just go ahead and work on kicking your caffeine habit for good.

【1】Why energy drinks are hard to regulate?

A.Because they contain a lot of caffeine.

    B.Because they cause heart problems.

C.Because they are not categorized as food.

D.Because they are allowed to be high caffeine.

【2】What does the underlined word “That” in Paragraph 2 mean?

A.A new study shows that energy drinks are harmful to humans.

B.As for now, energy drinks are not regulated in the United States.

C.Physician are going to evaluate the effect of energy drinks in the following studies.

D.Energy drinks together with other harmful ingredients could damage one’s well-being.

【3】Which of the following statements about energy drinks is TRUE?

A.Overdosing on caffeine directly contributes to death.

B.Energy drinks play a negative role on affecting people’s well-being.

C.People won’t get addicted to caffeine only by consuming energy drinks.

D.Adults’ consuming energy drinks may increase the possibility of the risk of diabetes.

【4】What’s the author’s attitude towards energy drinks?

    A.Favorable.

    B.Ambiguous.

    C.Disapproving.

    D.Indifferent.

  • 24、   Soft robots, which can move around the ocean without harming sea life, are ideal for underwater exploration. However, they are not so welcome in robot market because they are extremely slow and have a hard time operating through the water. But that may change soon thanks to a self-driven soft robot created by researchers at the University of California, San Diego.

The recently-developed robot, which resembles a paper lantern, was primarily built using soft materials. Its flexible ribs are attached to a circular plate at both ends. An adjustable nozzle (喷嘴) fitted on one side helps draw in and jet (射出) water each time the robot shrinks. The resulting jets of water enable it to swim forward, similar to a squid (乌贼). A plate holds a waterproof component that can house a camera to record data, which is of great value to further development of the robot. It also has its own power source, allowing it to float autonomously for long periods of time.

“Essentially, we recreated all the key features that squids use for high-speed swimming. This is the first robot that can achieve these jets of water by changing its body shape, which improves swimming efficiency,” said Professor Michael T. Though the squid robot has not been tested in open waters, it successfully swam around coral and fish in a large tank in the UC San Diego Birch Aquarium. What’s more, the robot clocked an impressive speed of 18 to 32 centimeters per second, or about half a mile per hour. Though nowhere close to real squids, it is faster than most other soft robots.

“After we were able to improve the design of the robot so that it would swim in a tank in the lab, it was especially exciting to see that the robot was able to successfully swim in a large tank among coral and fish, showing its possibility for real-world applications,” said Caleb Christianson, who led the study as part of his Ph. D paper.

【1】Why were the previous soft robots seldom used?

    A.Their application places are limited.

B.They do great damage to sea life.

C.They are very difficult to control.

D.Their advertising effect is hot good.

【2】What’s the similarity between the newly-developed robot and squids?

    A.Their body material.

    B.Their general speed.

    C.Their power source.

    D.Their swimming pattern.

【3】What can we learn about the squid robot according to Paragraph 3?

A.It is the first robot that can transform.

B.It will function well in open waters.

C.It has every feature that a squid has.

D.It can defeat most other soft robots in speed.

【4】What’s Caleb Christianson’s attitude towards the newly-developed robot?

    A.Positive.

    B.Critical.

    C.Uncaring.

    D.Doubtful.
