二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   Wildfires were rapidly spreading through northern and southern California as powerful winds swept through the state, burning homes and forcing more than 200,000 people to leave their homes. Thousands of structures were destroyed in the massive fires. Firefighters and volunteers worked around the clock, risking their lives to save others, although thick clouds of wildfire smoke hung in the air.

But it's not just humans in danger’s path. A video of a horse running away from the rescue team to find his family of horses from CBS Los Angeles went viral. The public was touched by the horse's heroic act and shared their thoughts on the Internet.

Volunteers were rescuing several horses from the wildfire when one of the horses jumped away from the group. They were trying to help the horse, but he refused. They probably had no idea what was wrong with the horse, who just started running away from them. The horse raced back into danger to lead his family to safety, despite rescuers' best efforts to stop him. He knew he couldn't leave them behind. As the tension increased, several human strangers jumped in to help the animals — they went back to the burning barn where some of the horses remained.

You can watch the horse run back into the smoke-filled area, reconnect with the horses inside the fence, and quickly accompany them out of the fenced-off area. Though it's not clear from the video, CBS Los Angeles reported that all but one of the horses involved were saved. Disastrous as the California wildfires have been, the video and countless other rescue stories — humans and animals alike — are shining light on all acts of goodness taking place.

1What does the author intend to show by telling the wildfires in detail in Para. 1?

A.What caused the big wildfires. B.How serious the wildfires were.

C.What rescuers did in the wildfires. D.How rapidly the wildfires spread.

2What does the underlined phrases 'went viral' mean?

    A.Turned bad. B.Got attacked.

    C.Became interesting. D.Grew popular.

3Which words can best describe the horse?

A.Loyal but stubborn. B.Caring and courageous.

C.Responsible and clever. D.Flexible but aggressive.

4What message does the author want to convey?

A.Fighting disasters needs joint efforts. B.Animals are always friends of man.

C.All good deeds deserve to be praised. D.Animals show goodness to each other.

  • 22、   Our smartphones are amazing, but our connections can be so slow. The future in sci-fi movies seems so close, yet so far away. 5G technology makes that future look easily achievable. Schools, hospitals, transportation, factories- even our homes will soon use this powerful wireless network. Read on to see the ways 5G will change our world.

The initial hype(宣传)around 5G seems to be all about phones. Last year, China started testing 5G mobile networks and the Hongkou district of Shanghai was the first to implement(实行)a 5G network.

But 5G has the ability to transform more than just phones. It has huge influences for robots, cars, health devices, retail and nearly every industry you can think of.

5G is the latest generation of cellular network technology. It is faster and more stable than 4G, the previous generation. The benefits of 5G come mostly from its speed and connectivity. The advantage of higher speeds is fairly obvious-people will be able to browse the internet and watch videos at a much greater speed than before. Imagine being able to download an entire movie in just a few seconds!

But speed brings other advantages that might not be so apparent. While there are many challenges in developing driverless cars, one of the biggest technical problems is latency, which refers to the delay between sending a signal and receiving it. Driverless cars will need to be able to react nearly instantly to sudden changes in their environment. This will require these cars to process huge amounts of data within milliseconds.

So what about connectivity? 5G will allow us to develop “smart” environments. Imagine having a smart home that automatically turns the lights on when you open your front door.

No matter where it is implemented, it looks like 5G will bring us a more exciting and convenient future.

1Who will possibly benefit most from 5G first?

A.People living in the city. B.Telecom equipment resellers.

    C.Driver. D.Businessmen.

2What is special about 5G according to the text?

    A.It has replaced 4G completely.

B.It has been used in every industry.

C.It was firstly developed in China.

D.It has a faster speed and a better connectivity than 4G

3What can we infer about driverless cars in paragraph 5?

A.They will be driven by robots.

    B.They have no weaknesses.

C.They will react immediately with the help of 5G.

D.They don’t need to analyze lots of data.

4What is the best title for the text?

    A.5G- The best choice B.Differences between 4G and 5G

C.5G- Changing our life D.Driverless cars -A new trend

  • 23、As Plastic Chokes the Ocean, Technology Can Help

Some 8 million tons of non-recyclable (不可回收的) plastic end up in the ocean each year. At an alarming rate, the seas may have more plastic than fish by the middle of the century. 【1】

Require a global solution to a global problem. 【2】 The developed countries and most of developing countries show their leadership in this process by setting goals, encouraging other member states, and offering support for poor countries.

【3】 Although they are helpful to protect clean water and air, as it is known, non-recyclable plastic is widely used in the markets. Therefore, non-recyclable plastic still can be bought in our daily life. Its disappearance needs much more time and efforts.

Pay more attention to the new studies on plastic and technologies. Some of researchers are aiming to make replacements for plastic. 【4】 For example, “interceptors” can remove river pollution before it reaches the ocean.

Expect more responsibility from manufacturers. 【5】 As a start, they should be encouraged to simplify complex packaging. And their working with world governments will support poorer nations to improve waste collection and landfill (垃圾场) management.

The world doesn’t have enough time in trying to solve the problem. The sooner these efforts start, the better.

    A.Strengthen the connection between countries.

B.Others are doing more research on new technologies.

C.Nearly 200 countries agreed to ban plastic pollution.

D.Establish production limits for non-recyclable plastic.

  • 24、   Stephen Wamukota, a nine-year-old from Mukwa village in Western Kenya, is making the headlines worldwide for his creative hand-washing machine. The young boy came up with the idea after watching village residents, who didn’t have easy access to running water, struggle to find an effective way to wash their hands to avoid spreading and contracting COVID-19.

Using the few resources at hand –wood scraps, nails, and a bucket –Stephen designed and built a simple, but functional, cleansing station. The clever creation, which consists of two pedals (踏板) –one to release soap and the other to release water–enables villagers to wash their hands contact-free, thereby reducing the likelihood of catching the disease.“I had bought some pieces of wood to make a window frame, but when I came back home after work one day, I found that Stephen had made the machine,” his father, James, told the BBC. “The concept was his, and I helped tighten the machine. I’m very proud.”James credits Stephen’s building ability to the village school’s curriculum (课程), which teaches children to assemble (装配) and construct items from a very young age.

The invention, which spread rapidly after James posted a photo on Facebook, has made Stephen an instant celebrity in Kenya. In early June 2020, the country’s leader, President Uhuru Kenyatta, gave the Uzalendo Award to the nine-year-old. The newly-created presidential honor is designed to acknowledge citizens who are making great contributions towards the nation’s fight against COVID-19.

Stephen has also been promised a full scholarship to a school that can develop his creative talent by Bungoma County Governor Wycliffe Wangamati. “We are waiting for school to open to contact him about his promise. He (the governor) told me that once school opens, he will give him a scholarship to a school that can match his talents,” James told CNN.

Though thrilled at the unexpected fame and success, Stephen is not resting on his honors. The young boy has already built another hand-washing machine and plans on adding several more, so that the village, which has no reported cases of the infectious disease, can remain COVID-19-free!

1What problem did the villagers have?

A.They failed to get access to the COVID-19 treatment.

B.They suffered from a lack of running water.

C.They didn’t know how to wash their hands properly.

D.They didn’t know how to use the hand-washing machine.

2What does James think of the village school’s curriculum?

A.He sings high praise for it. B.He considers it very abstract.

C.He thinks it too professional. D.He has reservations about it.

3What made the invention known to the public?

A.The country leader’s promotion. B.Word of mouth from citizens.

C.An unexpected award. D.A photo on Facebook.

4What does Stephen plan to do?

A.Win more scholarships for his school.

B.Help report the cases of infectious diseases.

    C.Build more hand-washing machines.

D.Urge the governor to perform his promise.
