二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、If you face two similar valued options for where to attend college, you have weighed the pros and cons, but you still have difficulty deciding. You decide to give it more time, and think about it a bit more.

The findings of a fascinating paper titled Irrational Time Allocation in Decision-Making suggests you might be making a mistake. Participants in the research viewed images that contained pairs of different foods and they had to choose which item they preferred to eat.

The researchers found that participants spent more time choosing between options that were roughly equal in value than between options in which there was a large value disparity. In other words, people took longer than they should have when deciding between two equally appealing choices. When shown an unpleasant food alongside a favored food, participants chose quickly. When shown a favored food alongside another favored food, people took a while.

Relatedly, there is research suggesting that people take longer to distinguish between two numbers when there is a small difference than when there is a large one. For example, people take longer to determine which number is larger between 47 vs 49 than for 12 vs 35. Perhaps this tendency explains why people take so long to choose between two options with roughly equal payoffs. In the same way that we have difficulty distinguishing numbers that are nearly equal in value, we also have difficulty choosing between options that are roughly equally pleasant.

However, there are doubts among people. Some think this seems not reasonable. If two choices are equally appealing, then the decision shouldn’t take so long. Some wonder whether this works in the opposite direction—whether duration of decision-making implies that options are equal. When options are roughly equal, people tend to take a long time to decide. Does this suggest that if people take a long time to decide, then options are roughly equal? Maybe in some instances, the longer we take to make a decision, the less it matters what we actually choose.

【1】What’s people’s common practice in decision making?

A.They often rush a decision without much thinking.

B.They seldom balance advantages and disadvantages.

C.They only concentrate on their personal preferences.

D.They tend to spend too much time on their options.

【2】What does the underlined word “disparity” in paragraph 3 probably mean?

    A.Difference.

    B.Preference.

    C.Growth.

    D.Potential.

【3】What does the research convey in paragraph 4?

A.It is difficult for people to value their options.

B.The value of numbers is difficult to distinguish.

C.People hesitate when facing two similar choices.

D.People prefer to take those high-valued options.

【4】What is the best title for the text?

A.Never too late to make a decision

    B.Be patient with appealing choices

    C.How to handle various choices?

D.The more time, the better decision?

  • 22、In 1992, when Xi Jinping worked in Fuzhou, he came across a newspaper report about “My Guling,” written by a Chinese student studying in the United States.

The report described an American couple who tried in vain to revisit a southern Chinese town called Guling, where the husband, Milton Gardner, had spent 10 years of his childhood before moving back to the United States in 1911.

Gardner, who later became a professor of physics at the University of California, had been longing to revisit Guling since 1979 when the diplomatic ties between China and the US were set up. But he had never made the trip due to his failing health.

According to the newspaper, Gardner kept uttering (叨念) “Kuling, Kuling” in the final hours of his life.

After he passed away, his wife Elizabeth Gardner decided to carry out the dying wish of her husband and since then made several trips to China in an attempt to find the small town that her husband had so much affection about. Her efforts ended in vain as she had few clues (线索) about the exact spot of the town. But a Chinese student lodging (寄宿) at the Gardners’ recognized the small town as Guling near Fuzhou City from postmarks on some old mails of late Mr. Gardner. The student wrote an article about Gardners’ story and sent it to the People’s Daily, one of the major newspapers in China.

“After I read the story, I immediately contacted Mrs. Gardner through the departments concerned and invited her to visit Guling,” Xi told the media. Thanks to Xi’s arrangement, Mrs. Gardner finally arrived at Guling in August 1992. She met there with nine childhood friends of her husband, all of whom were over 90 years old at that time.

It was a happy occasion for Mrs. Gardner, who was later awarded the honorary citizenship of Fuzhou City, Xi recalled.

“She said that she would value this bond (纽带) of friendship between her husband and the people of China, because after seeing for herself the beautiful Guling and the warmth and goodwill of the Chinese people, she now understood why her husband had been so deeply attached to China.”

“I believe there are many such touching stories between our two peoples,” said Xi.

【1】What can we infer from the passage?

A.Mr. and Mrs. Gardner were brought up in a southern Chinese town.

B.The name of the town changed shortly after Milton Gardner left.

C.Guling might have originally been pronounced as Kuling in English.

D.Mrs. Gardner knew exactly where the small town lay in south China.

【2】According to the passage, Mr. Gardner_________.

A.lived and worked in Guling for ten years

B.had few memories about the small Chinese town

C.kept in touch with his childhood playmates until he passed away

D.was deeply impressed by Guling’s people and environment

【3】What played the most important part in making Milton Gardner’s wish come true?

    A.The help from newspapers.

    B.Mrs. Gardner’s hard efforts.

    C.Mr. Xi’s concern and arrangement.

    D.The Chinese student’s letter to Mr.Xi.

【4】From the passage we can learn that_____.

A.the Gardners’ story is a moving one with a happy ending

B.the Chinese student studying in the US must be from Fuzhou

C.the mails which became clues of Guling were sent by Gardner

D.the American couple revisited China trying to find Guling but in vain

  • 23、Video chat is now the go-to outlet for many social distancers longing for social interaction. But having a successful fete isn't only a question of hopping on camera with friends and kicking off. Social grace is a big part of a successful virtual party — and etiquette doesn't go out the door just because you're in your pajamas in front of a camera.

    Introduce everyone to the group

Gone are the days during which you can introduce yourself to new people at your leisure. Instead, the second you click 'Join Meeting', you're pushed in front of potentially dozens of faces staring straight at you.

This is particularly problematic if not everyone on the call knows each other — Zoom itself recommends short ice-breaking sessions for everyone to introduce themselves on meetings.

"I like to use the wait room," says Tamiko Zablith, founder of Minding Manners International. "For security reasons, it means outsiders don't come crashing into your meeting. But also, you can let people come in one at a time, and then you can take that time to introduce them to the group as well."

Learn the art of the pause

Another wildly confusing thing about Zoom parties: everyone has to talk one at a time. There's no chance for small groups to organically form, for joking talk to fill a room, or for guests to talk at the same time. The whole group, no matter how large, can only listen to one person at a time.

That's why putting pauses in your speech is critical, especially since low internet speeds or weird audio may mean it's easy for someone to talk over someone else, drowning out what they have to say to the group.

"If the internet is a bit unreliable, you have those unstable signals. If I keep rambling, and the other person starts, there's that delay," says Zablith. "Work those pauses into your conversation."

    Know when to change backgrounds

Using Zoom's backgrounds can actually be a courtesy to eliminate distractions behind you.

Hiding those dirty dishes or pizza boxes, or obscuring other members of the household coming and going, eliminates distractions and makes the other people feel like they're getting your full attention.

"Wouldn't it be better if that distraction just wasn't there?" Zablith says, pointing to the advantage of virtual backgrounds being able to hide anything unsightly behind you. For others, virtual backgrounds also provide a sense of comfort or normalcy to the audience.

【1】According to the passage, which of the following is considered impolite?

A.To introduce everyone individually to the group.

B.To use virtual backgrounds to avoid distraction.

C.To put several pauses in your online speech.

D.To keep silent when joining in the meeting.

    【2】According to Tamiko Zablith, ______.

A.Internet speed matters little in Zoom parties

B.the wait room makes it easy to introduce everybody

C.for some, real room background has a comforting effect

D.pauses in speaker's conversation may delay the conference

【3】What is the purpose of the passage?

A.To attract more people to use Zoom.

B.To explain how to maintain social manners.

C.To offer guidance on Zoom social etiquette.

D.To compare online meetings with offline ones.

  • 24、SHORTLIST OF LONDON'S BEST

If you have limited visiting time we recommend you follow this list.

    1) Houses of Parliament. The guided tours of the Houses of Parliament are excellent, in any language you want, and get you to places that even normal Brits can't. However, when Parliament is sitting, they are not running, but you can still get in.

    2) Hampton Court. We rate this as one of the best attractions in Europe. A whole succession of kings and queens have added to Henry VIII’s original palace. There lie a fantastic park (by Capability Brown) and gardens (including the famous maze), and Tudor kitchens and one of the last remaining Real Tennis courts. Lots of free (once you've paid the admission) guided tours, some in costume, by people who know and love the place. It's also surrounded by a series of parks and makes a great destination for a bike trip - train out (30 minutes from Waterloo), bike back (12 miles) along the river. We prefer it to the Tower of London - you'll probably want to visit both, it knocks the spots off Buckingham Palace.

    3) The River. Walk along the South Bank from Tower Bridge to Lambeth. The best of London is spread out for you: The Tower of London & Tower Bridge, The Houses of Parliament, Lambeth Palace (residence of the Archbishop of Canterbury), Shakespeare's Globe theatre, Both Tate Galleries, St Paul's Cathedral, The South Bank Centre, The Temple, The London Eye, Westminster Abbey, Somerset House. (A 2 hour walk if you don't stop for long). Or you can take a boat out to Greenwich, the Thames Barrier or the Dome.

    4) Westminster Abbey. Where they crown Kings. An unreasonable admission charge (should really be free or voluntary donation), but a masterpiece anyway. If you get bored of waiting in the queue, or packed down by the crowds, hurry yourself off to the City where there's more square space of historic church, and empty.

    5) The Theatre. It'd be a crime to visit London and not take in a show. Londoners have been passionate about theatre for centuries. Not only is the quality high, but the price is low — one third the price of Broadway.

1Which tour will a foreign student studying the history of British Royal Family most probably prefer

A.the tour to Westminster Abbey B.the tour to Tower Bridge

C.the tour to Somerset House D.the tour to Hampton Court

2What time does the underlined statement “when Parliament is sitting” in paragraph 2 refer to?

A.when the Parliament is not officially in session.

B.when the members of Parliament are debating over a hot issue.

C.when the Parliament is staying idle for repairs.

D.when the members of Parliament are taking a break after some exercise

3Why are Londoners fond of theatre?

A.They enjoy the criminal drama plots.

    B.They enjoy the inexpensive admission.

C.They enjoy the Classical Music and Opera.

D.They enjoy the scene of Shakespeare’s Globe theatre.
