  • 22、While astronauts in space get to do many exciting things, they miss out on ordinary things that we all take for granted-being able to walk on firm ground, hanging out with family and digging into a slice of hot steaming pizza. Though not much can be done about the first two things, there may soon be a solution to the third one, thanks to this cool 3-D pizza printer!

About a year ago, NASA offered $125,000 to Anjan Contractor, a 3-D technology expert, to build a device(设备)that would allow astronauts to make pizza on demand. The mechanical engineer promised that his invention would produce pies in large quantities that looked, tasted and even smelled like pizza made in common ovens.

Late last year, the engineer presented a video of his first prototype(原型)that begins by creating a single slice of dough(面团)that is cooked and printed at the same time. Then comes the tomato “sauce” —a mix of tomato powder, oil and water and finally, a protein slice that resembles cheese. While the video doesn’t show the baking process, the inventor says that once the pizza is printed, it can be ready to be consumed in 7 seconds.

While the pie in the video looks delicious enough to attract any pizza lover, Anjan Contractor is far from ready for astronauts. That’s because he still has to find a solution to make the food container in the printer last for 30 years. Though that may sound unrealistic, actually it is not.

Anjan Contractor believes that the only way that is possible is that the water is removed from all the ingredients(配料)and then they are reduced to the powder form. This, as you can imagine, will not be so easy. But, while the printer may not be ready for space, it certainly looks ready enough for people on earth. Hopefully, NASA and Contractor will consider selling it to those not fortunate enough to go to Mars!

【1】Why does the author mention the things that astronauts in space cannot do?

A.To ask us not to take common things for granted.

B.To show they live a difficult life there.

C.To show their life is boring in space.

D.To introduce the topic of the text.

【2】NASA offered $125,000 to Anjan Contractor mainly to __________.

A.create some new type of 3-D printer

B.attract more companies to work for NASA

C.help astronauts in space enjoy fresh pizza one day

D.produce pizza in large quantities to earn great profits

【3】The biggest challenge that Anjan Contractor is faced with now is probably that __________.

A.he has no money left to go on with his research

B.the pizza doesn’t seem appetizing to pizza lovers

C.he has no way to make pizza that can last for thirty years

D.he cannot make the food container last for decades

【4】What’s the best title of the passage?

A.NASA is trying its best to help astronauts eat better

B.Astronauts may soon be able to enjoy steaming hot pizza

C.NASA is working on making pizza for common people

D.A 3-D pizza printer has been used to make pizza

  • 23、   Dogs feel their way through the world with their noses. Researchers have started imitating this super skill with an artificial-intelligence-based detective tool. In a study published in February in PLOS ONE, a multinational team reported an AI-powered system that is as accurate as trained dogs at correctly identifying cases of prostate cancer from urine samples. Andreas Mershin, a research scientist from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, wants to eventually integrate the technology into smartphones: There would be a tiny sensor in the phone with AI software running in the cloud.

Prostate cancer, the second most deadly cancer in men worldwide, is difficult to detect. The most widely used test can miss 15 percent of cancers. Trained dogs, on the other hand, were able to identify patients with prostate cancer from urine samples more than 96 percent of the time. Yet dogs can get bored and tired, so researchers want to develop an AI system that works more consistently.

Living cells produce chemicals that come out from the skin, blood, urine and breath. Artificial noses, including the "Nano Nose" that Mershin and one of his colleagues developed, can already detect those chemicals at the same parts-per-billion concentration as dogs. The team added to the chemical sensing an artificial neural network—a type of AI algorithm that can learn from looking at examples how to identify faces, for instance.

As the 2015 Journal of Urology study showed, dogs can be trained to reach more than 96 percent accuracy, and the AI can be trained to reach that same rate. Mershin plans to train the AI algorithm using data from the "Nano Nose", which is currently one third the size of an iPhone 10 and could be further shrunk to be integrated into smartphones.

    【1】What is the Nano Nose?

    A.A device.

    B.A method.

    C.A database.

    D.A research team.

【2】What is the advantage of the AI system over trained dogs in detecting prostate cancer?

A.It has the ability to sense chemicals.

B.It can collect samples in the cloud.

    C.It has the minimum error.

    D.It can ensure consistency.

【3】Which of the following can best replace he underlined word "shrunk" in Paragraph 4?

    A.Made smaller.

    B.Cut shorter.

    C.Expanded.

    D.Upgraded.

【4】What is the ultimate goal of the research?

A.To train dogs to detect diseases.

    B.To identify artificial faces.

C.To produce AI noses to detect diseases.

D.To add an AI sensor to the smartphone.

  • 24、A books-for-food program in Guatemala is helping feed needy children as hunger rates rise during the pandemic(疫情). It is run by a local nonprofit organization that aims to feed nearly 400 children.

The program is simple. People choose a book they want from a list of donated titles, and in return give bags of Incaparina, a high-protein drink mix. Bonifaz Diaz works for the program. By bringing the books-for-food program directly to people's homes, Diaz makes sure donations keep flowing. He has traveled more than 2,000 kilometers on his bicycle, delivered loads of books and carried back thousands of kilograms of Incaparina for the nonprofit group 32 Volcanoes. Diaz sometimes pulls a small cart that helps him carry up to 57 kilograms of product. He has traveled as far as 60 kilometers for a delivery to a town in the Western Highlands, where road conditions are poor.

Nearly a year into the books-for-food program, two more cyclists have joined Diaz and donations keep flowing in. Ana Castillo is a 29-year-old high school teacher who recently received the sociology book from Diaz. She donates to the program often. The 1.8 kilograms of Incaparina she provided will help one family eat for a month.

Castillo looks forward to choosing her books from the titles Diaz posts on social media. She also loves the feeling of a "growing circle" of giving and receiving. "You might not get to those places, but your help can. "she says.

Diaz says he plans to continue cycling against hunger as long as the need exists. He has faced his own economic difficulties since the theater company he co-founded closed last spring. But the program has kept him active. "It's an opportunity to serve in which we all benefit. "Diaz said.

【1】What is the purpose of the program?

    A.To serve the readers.

    B.To produce Incaparina.

    C.To offer poor children food.

    D.To fight the pandemic.

【2】What did Diaz do for the program?

A.He set up a social media.

    B.He made donations frequently.

C.He rented a cart to carry goods.

D.He traveled to deliver books and food.

【3】How is the program going now?

A.More people are involved in it.

B.Only two cyclists work for it.

C.Over 400 adults benefit from it.

D.Financial difficulties put it to an end.

【4】Which word best describes Diaz's attitude towards the program?

    A.Indifferent.

    B.Supportive.

    C.Tolerant.

    D.Unwilling
