二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Twelve years ago, I arrived in Central Florida from Puerto Rico. I had heard of a job opportunity and decided to pursue it. But it never became a reality. I quickly learned that being alone without resources in an unfamiliar city was not a comfortable situation to be in.

Once my limited funds ran out I became homeless and spent a year and a half living on the streets of Orlando. Apart from feeling not being noticed and missing my family, I had to face another challenge—hunger.

For the first time in my life, I, as a foreign man, who had lived my life in the relative comfort of the middle class, understood the desperation someone feels when they don’t get enough to eat. I clearly remembered having run a distance of more than 7 miles on many occasions just to make it to a local feeding program before they closed at 7 pm.

Once the need for food was met, the next challenge would arise—where to find a place to sleep for the night. Fortunately, local programs like the Coalition for the Homeless, Second Harvest Food Bank and the Wayne Densch Center were an important part of my ability to survive my painful experience.

With the assistance of these programs, I was accepted by a college scholarship program through the Coalition and obtained two degrees from Valencia.

My experience has helped me understand that devoting my life to helping others offers lasting rewards. Today, I am employed as Childhood Hunger Programs Manager at Second Harvest Food Bank and oversee the summer feeding, Hi-Five Kids Pack, and Kids Café programs. I am so proud to be able to distribute food resources to those wonderful programs and help hundreds more like me.

【1】What can be inferred from Paragraph 1?

    A. It was impossible for the author to get a job then.

    B. Many local people were out of work in Florida.

    C. Florida was not a good place for people living there.

    D. The author rejected many chances to get a job in Florida.

【2】Why did the author run a distance of over 7 miles on many occasions?

    A. Because he didn’t want to be late for work there.

    B. Because he desired to get some food to eat.

    C. Because he went there to help the poor.

    D. Because he helped distribute food resources to the poor.

【3】Before being accepted by a college scholarship program, the author_____.

    A. had lived with his relatives happily.

    B. had won his degree in a university.

    C. had been struggling financially.

    D. had lost hope of facing the future.

【4】 From his experience, the author learns that ______.

    A. misfortune may be an actual blessing.

    B. a friend in need is a friend indeed.

    C. where there is a will there is a way.

    D. one good turn deserves another.

  • 22、“It’s really a breakthrough,” said British scientist Guillem about the discovery of a planet “more or less” like Earth that is orbiting Proxima Centauri, the star nearest to our solar system.

Proxima b, or “Earth II”as you could call it , is a lttle bigger than our Earth, and its years only take 11days. Also, since it is so much closer to its red dwarf (矮小的) star than we are to the sun, the sky on its world is orange without any blue at all, creating a forever sunset effect.

There are a lot of questions for life forms that could live on this new planet. As the Chicago Tribune wrote: “Do you have poetry? Superheroes? Television? Diets? Mean bosses? Do you have any interest in visiting other worlds? If so, put Earth on your Must See list. ”

The discovery of the planet made us wonder if anyone had seen or heard of the space postcards from Pioneer 10 and Pioneer 11space probes (探测器), sent up into space in 1972 and the next year. Together with the probes were pictures of a man and a woman, along with diagrams of the solar system. Gold records were sent up into space on Voyager probes in 1977. If aliens (外星人) on Proxima b had played the record , they would have found human voices and pictures that showed the rich diversity of Earth.

It might not be time to plan a visit to Proxima b just yet—even if it has an atmosphere—as first , we would need to invent a way to get there in less than the 78,000 years it would take at 36,000 mph. “Proxima b looks to us like a promising Plan(et) B, just in case things go really south on this blue planet. ” the Chicago Tribune wrote.

1What do we know about Proxima b?

    A. It has an orange sky.

    B. It is closer to the sun.

    C. It has no sunrise.

    D. It is as large as Earth.

2What could be found on the gold records sent up by Voyager probes in 1977?

    A. Pictures of a couple.

    B. Maps of the solar system.

    C. Recorded sounds.

    D. Several postcards.

3What does the underlined sentence in the last paragraph probably mean?

    A. Earth moves to the south.

    B. Proxima b gets closer to Earth.

    C. Situation changes favorably.

    D. Conditions on Earth get worse.

4What was the attitude of the Chicago Tribune towards the discovery of the planet?

    A. Excited.

    B. Worried.

    C. Uninterested.

    D. Proud.

  • 23、Did you throw together the stuff you had on hand and amazedly found it good? Here’re some foods that never would have happened if someone hadn’t created them by mistake.

    ICE CREAM CONE

Before the ice-cream cone (蛋卷筒), people ate ice-cream out of dishes. This changed in 1904. A vendor (摊贩) ran out of dishes to serve ice-cream. Luckily, another vendor was selling waffle (华夫饼). The quick-thinking vendor rolled his waffle into a cone. The ice-cream vendor filled it with ice-cream for his customers, who were deeply impressed by its flavor and got a second treat when they realized they could eat the cone with ice-cream.

    POTATO CHIPS

It is the result of a complaint. In 1853, a man ordered fried potatoes at a restaurant. He sent them back to the kitchen because they weren’t crispy (松脆的) enough. The chef was so angry that he sliced the potatoes extremely thin, put lots of salt, and fried them Then they became a specialty.

    TOFU

Tofu is made by fresh soya milk, and was accidentally invented in China 2,000 years ago, when a cook added seaweed to soya milk. Tofu is a great example of how messing up a recipe can create something unexpectedly good.

    CHEESE PUFF

One day, an employee working in a company making animal feed watched workers pouring cornmeal (玉米粉) into the machine. It came out of the machine in ribbons. He took some of the ribbons home, added oil and flavors to them, and voila! Cheese puffs!

【1】Why did ice-cream customers want a second treat?

A.Because of the lack of dishes.

B.Because of the portability of the cone.

C.Because of the half price of two snacks.

D.Because of the taste of the combination.

【2】What can we know from this text?

    A.They were created by accident.

    B.They are western popular snacks.

C.They were developed in the kitchen.

D.They were invented for pleasant flavor.

  • 24、   Like Indiana Jones (a fictional character), who undertakes daring adventures in his spare time, my father is a businessman by day and a thrill-seeker by night.

His enthusiasm rubbed off on me, and I have been lucky to be his companion on many adventures. We started out by riding America’s fastest, most twisted roller coasters. After that a whitewater rafting trip through the Grand Canyon(峡谷)on the Colorado River started our search for other extreme thrills across the globe.

Amazing thrills awaited us at every corner of the world. Skydiving was especially thrilling when performed from a helicopter over the breathtaking Swiss Alps. We have bungee jumped from the world’s highest platform, Bloukrans Bridge in South Africa. Most recently, in Interlaken, Switzerland, we attempted canyoning(溪降运动).

Anyone who loves a challenging thrill should try canyoning. Our adventure began with a 90-foot rope down a canyon wall into a rushing ice-cold river. Then we crossed the bone-chilling water toward the mouth of the river, our final destination, where the reward for the journey would be a whole view of the beautiful Interlaken basin. We slid over slippery rocks at one moment, jumped from waterfalls and swam through underwater tunnels the next. Back and forth we alternated, climbing rope ladders before going back into the fresh mountain water. Certainly, danger was waiting for us in each of these activities, but that very danger provided the rush. Canyoning was indeed one thrill after another, from beginning to end.

While canyoning is possible only in certain places, thrills and adventure can be found anywhere. Our beginnings in the U.S. showed us just that. We continue to seek the big thrills, but in doing so, we have learned to seek lesser excitement in daily life as well. After all, we can’t go canyoning every day, and small thrills are better than none for us thrill-seekers.

1What do we know about the author’s father?

A.He is a very successful businessman.

    B.He is doing a part-time job.

C.He likes Indiana Jones very much.

    D.He enjoys experiencing adventures.

2What does the underlined phrase “rubbed off on” mean in paragraph 2?

    A.relate to B.keep off

    C.affect D.confuse

3What did the author and his father do when attempting canyoning?

A.Jumped down from waterfalls and swam across the icy water.

B.Jumped down a canyon river and crossed it.

C.Climbed over a rope ladder and swam through underwater tunnels.

D.Climbed down a canyon wall and swam across the rushing icy river.

4What does the author want to tell us in the last paragraph?

A.Small thrills in daily life are worth a try as well.

B.We had better go abroad to experience canyoning.

C.Canyoning is not suitable for everyone.

D.America is the most proper place to experience adventures.

  • 26、Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.

Why Mindset Mastery Is Vital to Your Success

The single most important factor influencing a person's success, whether personal or professional, is mindset. What you think about has a direct impact on your behavior, and not the other way around. A seemingly small thing that makes a huge difference, mindset accounts for the primary distinction between those who succeed and those who do not. And, if you are serious about achieving success in any area of your life, you must learn to master yours.

To successfully accomplish any worthwhile feat, a person must first feel capable of achieving it. It doesn't matter what anyone else thinks. Mindset is essential to developing healthy self-esteem. It is an important tool that affects our daily self-dialogue and strengthen our beliefs, attitudes and feelings about ourselves. So, become the gatekeeper of your mind and plant seeds of positivity rather than criticism and doubt.

Besides, mindset is critical to drive. Drive is the constant determination to achieve an important objective. It includes the process of developing a vision for success and engaging in sustained effort over time. Without drive, achieving most goals would be difficult at best. With the power to direct focus and encourage commitment to higher purpose, mindset can easily urge someone to push past comfort zones. People with drive are self-motivated and strive to accomplish more.

No matter what goal you seek to achieve, the path to your success is sure to include some challenges. When facing an extreme hardship, a person may feel justified in bowing to defeat. For them, it can feel like an easy road. If you want to get through them, however, you will need to develop thick skin and learn to lace each challenge head on. Yet, this is where mindset plays a critical role. The capacity to move through the fire, to get knocked down and not knocked out, is the proof to the power of a strong mindset.

Are you ready to command your results? If so, make a conscious decision to master your mindset and reach for greater success in the new year and beyond.
