21、For many people the subject of hiccups (嗝) is a joke, but for Harry Mendes, a fifteen-year-old schoolboy from Birmingham, it was something quite different.
His hiccups began one Sunday lunch time and continued day and night for two weeks. After the first week, Harry's parents took him to hospital, but it took another week for the doctors to cure his attack.
Harry, who is now back at school, described what happened to him.
“When I began to hiccup, I drank a glass of water but that didn't do any good. That evening I had hiccups every four seconds. We tried everything to stop them. I held my breath and drank cold drinks. My father even tried to give me a shock but that didn't work either.”
After a week of sleepless nights, he went to hospital. The doctors took an X-ray of his chest but they couldn't find anything wrong.
“They gave me some medicine and my hiccups slowed down, but it was another week before the medicine worked completely and my hiccups stopped.”
Harry was very lucky. The world record holder is the American farmer Charles Osborne, who hiccupped for sixty-eight years. He stopped in 1990 at last, but nobody knows why.

22、With low temperatures and less and less food, winter is an uncomfortable season for animals. Many animals enter hibernation (冬眠) to get through it.
Hibernation is when an animal goes into a state of being inactive for a long time. Animals hide away from their enemies. Hibernation makes the animals’ bodies cool and slows their heartbeat to just a few times per minute, for up to months at a time.
But why don’t humans hibernate? Humans don’t enter hibernation for many reasons. Our body is not designed for hibernation. Our ancestors were animals with no history of hibernating. For example, human waste is a huge problem for human hibernation. Animals are able to stop their waste. Unluckily, humans can’t do this.
There are other problems. Body temperatures below 2.8℃ may bring a lot of trouble and cause ache. Cold temperatures can also make people easier to be ill. In fact, humans don’t need to sleep through winter. We have found fire, clothes, shelter, hunting and farming. These ways can help us keep away from the cold.
Could humans hibernate in the future? For long-distance space travel, it’s possible. A journey to Mars would take around months at the moment. If we hope to visit another star system, even if we could travel at the speed of light, the journey would take years. Being able to hibernate would make such distances less boring for the astronauts (宇航员) and save energy.
Some scientists have treated that seriously. They started to do something on long-term hibernation as a way to make long-term space travel possible and easier.
