No one knows who flew the first kite. It was probably someone in China or perhaps Indonesia. Indonesian fishermen hung fishhooks on kites and sent them out to sea to catch fish. Starting 2,000 years ago, Chinese farmers flew kites to welcome the New Year and bring good luck to Earth.
In China, people also used kites during wartime. One Chinese story tells how soldiers put noise makers on kites and flew them at night over the enemy camp. The enemies were frightened by the noise and ran away.
About 1,300 years ago, Chinese travelers took kites to Japan. So kites filled the skies there. Kites reached Thailand about 700 years ago. During foods, Thai farmers flew kites over their fields. They hoped the kites would drive away the clouds and stop the rain. Over time, kites flew their way out of Asia. Today, kites are a passion all over the world. Kite fans meet at festivals in many parts of the world and have great fun.
Over the years, Kites have also helped people understand the natural world. In 1749, for example, thermometers were tied to kites to measure temperatures. In 1906, cameras hanging from kites took pictures of San Francisco, California after an earthquake. The photos helped people plan what to do.
Kites also helped inventors find out how to make airplanes. The Wright brothers studied how kites flew, which helped them make the first successful airplane.

25、 The police are looking for robbers who stole valuable diamonds from the jewelry show at the City Centre yesterday evening. The owner reported that a necklace estimated to be worth $1.5 million was taken by a young couple. Witnesses said that couple in their early 20s caught their eyes because they seemed too young to be interested in such expensive jewelry. In his story, a salesman said that the couple were dressed in clothing that seemed too casual for the rather formal atmosphere of the jewelry show. According to a saleswoman who talked with them, the couple said that they were interested in a special necklace for the woman to wear at their wedding next month. The man said that he was a nationally known athlete, so many reporters would come to the wedding ceremony.

26、
With an unusual way to her work, Cayce Zavaglia is a famous artist. She embroiders with a needle and she calls this style “painting with thread”.
“Painting with a needle is not as fast as painting with a brush,” she says, “It needs a lot of patience, and I often stop to rethread my needle. When people ask how long it takes to complete a portrait, I tell them nearly 200 hours!”
Cayce’s first step is deciding who will be in the portrait. “I love creating portraits of my family and close friends,” she says. Once she decides, she invites that person to her studio and takes hundreds of photos. She studies the way the light falls across the person’s face. She makes sure his or her eyes are looking straight into the camera. Then, after many hours of studying the photos, she chooses the perfect one for her portrait.
Next, she enlarges the photo. And then, she paints the background. Using thread, she matches the colors in the photo and then the embroidering begins. Cayce starts with the hair, and next the shoulders. Then she moves on to the clothing, and finally the face. The human face is what she most enjoys creating in her art.
“My biggest challenge is making the skin, hair, and clothing look real. In a portrait of my daughter, the skin appears soft. In a portrait of my dad, an aging face can be easily seen.”
Cayce believes her success depends on three things: her choice of colors, the length and direction of the embroidering, and her ability to make the portrait look true. “I love the surprise when people see my art,” Cayce says.” From a distance, they believe the portraits are painted. When they take a closer look, they see the portrait has been embroidered.”
