四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、As your phone’s alarm blares (发出刺耳鸣响), you slowly open one eye. How can it be morning already? It seems like it was only a few hours ago that you finished your homework. If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. Many teens struggle to get enough sleep.

According to the Sleep Foundation, nearly 60 percent of middle school students and more than 70 percent of high school students in the U.S. aren’t getting the recommended (被推荐的) 8.5 to 9.5 hours of sleep a night. In Cherry Hill, New Jersey, a group of students have formed an organization called Cherry Hill Students for Later School Start Times. It wants local middle and high schools to push back the start of the school day to 8:30 a.m.

In fact, schools in several states have changed to later start times in recent years. Research shows that inadequate (不足的) sleep can negatively affect students’ health and grades. Starting the school day too early can deprive teens of much-needed sleep. Studies show that well-rested teens are more likely to get good grades and less likely to suffer from (患有) depression.

As Aiden Rood, the co-founder of Cherry Hill Students for Later School Start Times, explains, “Kids are healthier in general when they start later, and they do better in school.”

However, not everyone thinks schools should push back the start of the school day.

Many school teachers say delaying (延迟) the start of the school day would create a number of challenges. First, school buses would have to be rescheduled, more money would be needed. There’s also concern (担心) that later school start times could leave some kids walking home in the dark. Changing school hours could also create child care problems for some parents.

In addition, opponents (反对者) say, later school start times would leave teens with fewer hours for after-school activities and homework. That’s what Erin Isherwood, a parent in Chico, California is worried about. The start time at her kids’ high school was pushed back 45 minutes this year. “My son has an exercise class that he absolutely (绝对地) loves at a gym, now he can’t go.” She explains.

【1】The words “deprive teens of much-needed sleep” in Paragraph 3 are closest in meaning to ________.

    A.provide teens with much-needed sleep

    B.increase teens’ much-needed sleep

C.take much-needed sleep away from teens

    D.talk about teens’ much-needed sleep

【2】According to the passage, what is a possible benefit of later school start times?

A.Students can get up early to do more exercise.

B.Students can get more knowledge about their health.

C.Students can finish their homework more easily.

    D.Students can get better grades.

【3】Some people don’t agree with later school start times because ________.

A.students will have more time for after-school activities

B.some students will walk home in the dark

C.students will have to take school bus to school

    D.students will get enough sleep

【4】Which of the following is the best title of the passage?

A.Should Your School Day Start Later?

B.When Is the Right Time to Sleep?

C.What Can Students Do After School?

D.Is Enough Sleep Good or Bad for Students?

  • 25、The next day, some men took Tom and seven other slaves to Mr Skeggs’s slave(奴隶)warehouse. It was a large house where the slaves could have food, rest and wash the day before an auction(拍卖). So they could look good and their price could go higher.

In the morning, Mr Skeggs and his men took the slaves to the market. There the traders would examine their muscles, their teeth and their bodies in the same way they treated horses or cows.

Among the slaves for sale there was Susan, a mulatto(黑白混血), and her beautiful daughter Emmeline, whose skin was almost white because she was a quadroon. When a man bought Susan, she asked him, “Please, master, buy my daughter too! Don’t separate us!”

“I’ll try, but I don’t know if I can,” he said. But Emmeline was too beautiful and her price went too high for him. A horrible man called Simon Legree who owned a cotton plantation on the Red River, bought Emmeline, Tom and a few other slaves. The moment he saw Legree, Tom knew he was in trouble.

They got on a steamboat and left New Orleans. Tom sat, with chains(链条)on his hands, chains on his feet, and something heavier than chains on his heart. Nothing remained of what he once had: his wife and children, St Clare’s home, Eva, St Clare’s promise of freedom.

Legree came to check his new slaves and stopped opposite Tom. St Clare always made sure his slaves had good clothes, and Tom was wearing his best trousers and boots.

    “Stand up.” said Legree.

“Take off that tie.” Tom found this difficult because of his chains, but he tried. Legree pulled the tie with force and put it in his own pocket.

  • 26、   We have known for a long time that flowers of different plants open and close at different time of day. This is so familiar that there seems to be no need to ask the reason for it. Yet no one really understands why flowers open and close like this at particular times. The process (过程) is not as simple as we might think, as recent experiments have shown. In one study, flowers were kept in constant (连续的) darkness. We might expect that the flowers, without any information about the time of day, did not open as they normally do. In fact, they continued to open at their usual time. This suggests that they have some mysterious (神秘的) way of knowing the time. Their sense of time does not depend on information from the outside world; it is, so to speak, inside them, a kind of “inner clock”.

This discovery (发现) may not seem to be very important. However, it was later found that not just plants but also animals —including man —have this “inner clock” which controls the working of their bodies and influences (影响) their activities. Men, then, are also influenced by this mysterious power. Whether we wish it or not, it affects such things in our life as our need for sleep, our need for food.

In the past, this did not matter very much because people lived in natural condition. In the modern world, things are different; now there are spacemen, airplane pilots and, in ordinary life, a lot of people who have to work at night. It would be very useful, then, to know more about the “inner clock”. Such ordinary things as flowers might help us understand more about ourselves.

1A recent experiment showed that ________________.

A.different flowers open and close at different times of day

B.for their opening and closing, flowers do not need information from the outside world

C.flowers are influenced by weak light even when they are in a dark room

D.flowers can be used for telling the time

    2The “inner clock” _________________________.

A.is an unimportant discovery B.is only found in animals

C.has not been understood by far D.has an effect on human life

3Further study of the “inner clock” will be useful because ________________.

A.it might help us in some way

B.we do not yet understand plants and animals well enough

C.the number of spacemen and airplane pilots is fast increasing

D.we should try to live more naturally than we do now

4Kept in constant darkness, flowers ________________________.

A.will not open or close as usual B.will not open any longer

C.will open as they do in natural conditions D.will always remain in full blossom (开花)

5________________ have a mysterious power of knowing time without information from the outside world.

A.Animals including man as well as plants B.All living things except man

C.Flowers are the only things in the world that D.Neither animals nor plants
