四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、This morning was terrible for me. My tooth was aching, and I'd been in an argument with a friend. Her words still hurt : “Linda, the trouble with you is that you won't put yourself in my place. Can't you see things from my point of view?” I shook my head strongly--and felt the ache in my tooth. I'd thought I could stand the ache until my dentist who was on vacation came back, but the pain was really unbearable(无法忍受的). So I started calling the other dentists in the phone book, but no one could see me immediately(立刻). Finally, at about lunchtime, I got lucky.

“If you come by right now, madam” the nurse said, “the dentist will fit you in.”

I took my bag and keys and rushed to my car. But suddenly I began to doubt about the dentist. Why wasn't he as busy as the others?

In the dentist’s office, I sat down and looked around. I saw nothing but the white walls and I became even more worried. The nurse noticed my nervousness and put her warm hand over my ice-cold hand.

When I told her my fears, she laughed and said, “Don't worry. The dentist is very good.”

“How long do I have to wait for him?” I asked impatiently.

“Come on, he is coming. Just lie down and relax. And enjoy the artwork,” the nurse said.

    “The artwork?” I was puzzled.

The chair went back. Suddenly I smiled. There was a beautiful picture, right where I could enjoy it: on the ceiling(天花板).  How considerate the dentist was! At that moment, I began to understand what my friend meant by her words.

    根据短文内容, 回答问题。

【1】Who did Linda argue with this morning?

【2Why did Linda call the other dentists in the phone book?

3How did Linda go to see the new dentist?

4Was Linda nervous after she walked into the new dentist’s office?

    5Where was the beautiful picture?

  • 25、No one knows when the first kite was made. The first record of a kite was more than 2,000 years ago in China. General Han Hsin was the leader of a rebel army(叛军). He wanted to overthrow(推翻) a cruel king, but he had only a few men. Hsin decided to dig a tunnel into the king’s castle. He flew a kite to judge how long the tunnel should be. The men in the tunnel took the kite string with them. When they reached the end of the string(线) , they knew it was time to dig up. They came up in the castle courtyard and defeated the king.

Kites have been flown in Japan for hundreds of years. In the 1700s, kites were flown in the fall to give thanks for a good harvest. Stalks of rice were tied to the kites. Kites were also flown to send good wishes to couples who had had their first son.

Today in Japan kites are often flown as part of a celebration, such as the beginning of a new year. The kites are painted to look like animals, heroes and gods. Small kites as well as huge ones are made. Kite festivals are held each year in many areas of the country.

Kites have been used for scientific purposes in the western world. Most people have heard of Benjamin Franklin and his kite. Franklin had been studying electricity. He thought that lightning was a form of electricity, but he wasn’t sure. In 1752, he tried to find out. He flew a kite in a storm. A key was attached to the kite. When sparks jumped from the key, it proved his idea was correct.

In the 1890s, Lawrence Hargrave invented the box kite. He used this kite to test ideas about fight. From 1898 to 1933, the United States Weather Bureau used box kites to gather weather data. The Wright Brothers also experimented with kites. What they learned helped them make the first airplane flight in 1903.

  • 27、When people hear a song from their childhood, they may be glad because it can bring back so many good memories. Some musical works, lost for a long time, were played for the first time on BBC Radio 3.

Maddalena Casulana, an Italian composer(作曲家), lived in the 16th century. During that time, most musical works were written by men. Most people thought men were better composers. However, Casulana thought it was not true because nothing could prove(证明) that.

Casulana showed a great talent for music. She was the first woman to publish her own musical works in the history of Western music. She wrote three composition books, one of which has survived(幸存) into the modern day. Like other composition books from the 15th and 16th centuries, Casulana’s composition books were divided into partbooks, with each partbook having a separate book. Unluckily, her alto(中音部的) partbook went missing. Laurie Stras, a professor of music, explained that songs wouldn’t work without the alto part. “It would be like performing a string quintet(弦乐五重奏) without the second violin. It wouldn’t have made sense,” Laurie said.

Laurie took on the task of searching for the missing partbook. She noticed that the partbook disappeared from a library in Poland during the Second World War. Later Laurie found it in the Russian State Library in Moscow. Finally Casulana’ s lost songs could once again appear in the halls of music.

As a woman composer, Casulana made a great difference to Western music. A lot of people admire her. So BBC Radio 3 played her “lost and found” works on International Women’s Day 2022.

【1】What does the underlined word “that” in Paragraph 2 refer to?

A.Men composers were more popular in the 16th century.

B.Most of musical works were created by men.

C.Men did better in musical works than women.

【2】Laurie found the alto partbook in _______.

    A.Poland

    B.Italy

    C.Russia

【3】Why did BBC Radio 3 play Casulana’s works?

A.To show respect for the woman composer.

B.To encourage young people to write music.

C.To make people enjoy the radio program.

【4】What is the main idea of the passage?

    A.Casulana’s music has been found.

    B.Casulana was a successful composer.

C.Music can remind people of good memories.

John McCarthy, a scientist, c 2up with the name "artificial intelligence" in 1955. Many things such as learning and problem s 3 can be done by computers, though not in the same way as we do.

An unusual goal of AI research is to create computer programs that can learn, solve problems, and think logically(逻辑地). At present we use the term Al for s4 understanding human speech, recognizing human faces, operating self-driving cars and competing in some game systems like Chess and AlphGo(阿尔法狗). Some people also consider AI a danger to humans i5 it develops too quickly. Professor Stephen Hawking, a well-known British scientist, was not for this kind of technology.

Math is the basic language of AI. If we r 6 the standard in the learning of math, our students will be more likely to become successful AI designers in the future. We not only want bright students, but also need to attract average students and give them the math skills which are needed to change them i7  AI designers. Besides, a good k8 .of computer science is also necessary for AI designing.

Scientists hope to create c9 and emotional AI which can possibly understand human feelings or create art. Many ways and tools have been tried to d10  this fascinating field.
