26、Several days ago, I was walking home from school and saw some writing on the fence of a house I was passing by. It said, “Happiness is a direction, not a destination (终点).” I had been having a bad day and just reading this brightened my day a little. I also took out a pen and wrote one of my favorite quotes (格言) down.
When I came back to the fence, I saw another quote under mine in the handwriting as the first one. I added another, and we kept at this pattern for quite a while. One day, I was writing another quote on the fence and the old man, one of my neighbors, who owned the fence, saw me. He came out and I was afraid he would be mad at me for writing on his fence; he was not known to be very friendly. He gave me a sharp glance and then read the quotes on the fence. Without saying a word, he said something to himself and then went back inside. I was a bit terrified for a while, afraid to go back to the fence, but when I did, I noticed not more quotes but two words in entirely different handwriting had been added, “Thank you.”
Later, I saw the old man in his front yard. He beckoned (召唤) me over and told me how my quotes had been inspiring him, how he thanked me and how he was glad to see young people still have “values”. We are now good friend and I talk to him a lot. This experience has changed my life. I still don’t know who wrote that very first quote, but if he is out there, I’d like to say “thanks” to that unknown friend.

C. He thought the old man would scold(责骂) him for what he had done.
D. He thought the old man would tell his parents about his action.
【4】Who must have added “Thank you.” to the fence?
A. The old man. B. Someone else.

27、 The final exams are the most important assessment (评估) throughout the whole term in Canada. It usually takes up 20 to 30 percent of one’s marks. But doing bad on the finals doesn’t mean that one can’t have an acceptable final score, as it includes other marks as well, such as unit tests, projects and presentations.
Different from those in China, exams in Canada don’t last all day. Students just come to school when they have exams. For example, if you have an exam on Monday morning and one on Tuesday morning, you can have a break between the different exams to have time to relax or study.
For most science subjects, there will be at least one week for students to review their studies---teachers often finish the lessons one week before the exams. But when it comes to liberal arts (人文科学) subjects, things are a bit different. For every liberal arts class, students need to produce a project before the finals. The projects usually last one or two weeks and require students to mix up all the knowledge they’ve learned during the term. When I was in Grade 10, the project for my English was to find the similarities between the novels we’d studied that year and present them in a visually(视觉的) creative way, such as by making a poster. These projects usually take up 5 to 10 percent of a student’s final marks.
Some think that the projects are nothing but a distraction (分心的事) that wastes your time before finals, but I believe they’re a great way to review everything and add some fun to our busy lives.
【1】The underlined phrases “take up” in Paragraph 1 may mean “________” in Chinese.

A.in Canada the students have at least 2 weeks to review the lessons
B.students need to use all the knowledge they have learned to finish a project
C.for science subjects students don’t have any exams
D.the projects waste the students’ time before the finals
【4】What is the writer’s attitude(态度) towards the projects for liberal arts subjects before the finals?
A.Doubtful (怀疑的). B.Unimportant. C.Helpless. D.Useful and fun.
【5】Which of the following is TRUE about the finals in Canada according to the passage?
A.The final exams usually take up 5% to 10% of a student’s marks.
B.Students in Canada usually have a full day’s exams.
C.The projects usually take up 10% to 15% of a student’s marks.
