24、Long ago Adana lived in a small village in Africa. Everyone in the village had jobs to do, and the villagers depended one another. When Adana turned ten, her mother called for her.
“Adana, it is time for you to take your place in the village. You shall be the water girl. Each morning we need you to go down to the spring, fill these buckets with water, and bring them back to the village before noon.”
Adana took pride in being given such an important job. She picked up the yoke with the buckets, flung it over her back and walked to the spring. When she arrived, she took a drink and then filled the buckets with clean, cool water. Adana looked at the sun. It was nearly noon, and she knew the villagers were depending on her.
She turned to a water girl from a nearby village and asked, “How long will it take to carry water back to my village?”
The girl thoughtfully replied, “If you go slowly, it will not take very long. But, if you go fast, it will take you all day.”
Adana listened and thought about what the girl had told her. She did not believe the girl, and she climbed back up the bank and headed down to the path toward her village. Adana started off slowly, but increased her speed with each step. Soon, she was slowly jogging back toward her village. Halfway home, she stopped to take a little sip of water. When she did, she saw that the buckets were only half full. Water had been sloshing out along the path as she traveled.
Disheartened, Adana turned back toward the spring. Once again, she filled the buckets with nice, clean water. Then, she walked slowly back toward the village.
When she arrived, her little sister asked, "How long does it take to carry water back from the spring?”
Adana smiled and said, “If you go slowly, it will not take very long. But if you go fast, it could take all day.” Adana' little sister listened, but thought this was an odd thing to say. From that day forward, Adana walked quickly to the spring each morning. On her way home, she walked slowly and carefully.

25、Traveling to every part of the world gets easier, but how well do we know and understand each other. Here’s a simple test. Imagine you are planning to hold a meeting at four o’clock. What time should you expect your foreign business friends to arrive? If they are Germans, they’ll arrive on time. If they are Americans, they’ll probably be 15 minutes early. If they are Englishmen, they’ll be 15 minutes late, and you should allow up to an hour for the Italians.
The British seemed to think since the English language was widely used in the world, people would always understand what they do. However, they found they were completely wrong. For example, the British are happy to have a business lunch and discuss business matters and have a drink during the meal. The Japanese prefer not to work while eating. Lunch is a time for them to relax and get to know each other and they don’t drink at lunchtime. The Germans like to talk business before dinner. The French like to eat first and talk afterwards. They have to be well fed and watered before they discuss anything.
【1】What do the Germans prefer when they go to a meeting?
A. They prefer to be on time.
B. They prefer to arrive very early.

26、Miguel gathered his guitar and all the Ernesto de la Cruz albums he could carry and rushed down from the rooftop. His family surrounded him when he reached the yard.
Abuelita’s eyes darted from the guitar to the albums. “What is all this?” she said. “You keep secrets from your own family?”
“It’s all that time he spends in the plaza,” Tio Berto said.
“Fills his head with crazy fantasies,” Tia Gloria added.
“It’s not a fantasy (幻想)!” Miguel protested. He handed his father the old photograph of Mama Imelda, Coco, and the unidentified (未知身份的) man and pointed to the guitar. “That man was Ernesto de la Cruz! The greatest musician of all time!”
“We’ve never known anything about this man. But whoever he was, he still left his family,” Miguel’s father said. “This is no future for my son.”
“But, Papa, you told me to look to the ofrenda (灵坛). You said my family would guide me! Well, Ernesto de la Cruz is my family! I’m supposed to play music!”
“Never! That man’s music was a curse (诅咒)! I will not allow it!” Abuelita said, raising her voice.
“You will listen to your family. No more music,” added Miguel’s father.
“Just listen to me play – ” “End of argument,” Papa said.
Miguel thought they’d change their minds if they heard him play. He lifted his guitar and prepared to strum, but Abuelita snatched it from his hands. She pointed to the photo. “You want to end up like that man? Forgotten? Left off your family’s ofrenda?”
“I don’t care if I’m on some stupid ofrenda!” The words burst out before Miguel could stop them. He couldn’t take them back, even though he wanted to.
The family gasped. Abuelita’s brow hardened. She raised the guitar in the air.
“No!” Miguel cried.
“Mama,” Miguel’s dad said just as Abuelita smashed (撞击) the guitar against the ground.
“There! No guitar, no music,” she said.
The whole family was silent as Miguel stared at his guitar, shattered into a hundred pieces on the ground. Miguel couldn’t move — he felt like someone had smashed him to pieces.

27、 Trees are greatly useful to man in three very important ways.
The first important way is that they provide man with food, wood and other products. Trees provide not only man with food, but also many animals with food. Without trees many animals could not live on the earth. It's not easy for man to live on the earth, either.
The second important way is that trees give us shade(阴凉处). On a hot summer day, people are looking forward to having a rest under the shade of a tree after they have walked a long way. You can imagine how important the shade of a tree is to man and to animals.
The third important way is that trees help to prevent drought(旱灾) and floods(水灾). However, in many parts of the world, man has not realized the third important way. They cut trees down in large numbers. There will be fewer trees in the future.
