  • 24、   There are about 6,000 languages that are spoken around the world. But 43 percent of these languages are dying out, according to UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization,联合国教科文组织).If no action is takensome of these languages will become extinct (灭绝的).

Languages become endangered for many reasons. One is that some communities of native speakers of the endangered languages no longer exist (存在)HuffPost reported. These people leave their communities and move to cities or towns.

In additionthe languages of dominant (占主导地位的)” cultures may drive other languages into extinction. To get better education and jobs, young people have to focus their attention on learning dominant languages rather than their own languages. Dominant languages include EnglishFrench and Mandarin (普通话).

Once a language dies, it rarely conies back to life. Governments across the globe are taking action to prevent this. In September, the US state of Alaska announced that the loss of indigenous (土著的)languages was anemergency(紧急事件). It is now working to give new life to such languages, Quartz reported.

In New Zealandthe government has said it wants over 20 percent of the country’s population to be able to speak Maori, an indigenous language, by 2040. It plans to provide Maori lessons in all New Zealand schools by 2025, The New York Times reported.

China is also trying to protect its languages. About 130 languages are spoken in China, even more than the number of ethnic groups in the country. In 2015, the government started a project to record all the languages spoken in China, Xinhua reported. Universities like Minzu University of China have created minority language majors (专业)for their students.

    B. Because it is too difficult to learn.

    C. Because it is used less in daily life.

    D. Because schools don5t offer lessons for it

3What does the underlined word “this” in Paragraph 4 refer to?

  • 25、   Keeping a busy social life among lots of friends may keep people thinner than spending several hours in a gym, according to scientists. Scientists believe social activities can release a brain chemical that changes white fat into brown fat. Brown fat burns calories (卡路里). To produce heat, while white fat keeps calories and make us fatter.

Changing white fat into brown fat is very difficult, generally requiring long-term exposure to cold conditions or making part of the body’s nervous (神经的) system active. However, scientists from Ohio State University think that having a busy social life is an even better way of carrying out this change.

Tests on mice showed that those lived in large communities and had more space and toys lost half of their stomach weight in four weeks, even if they ate more than those in boring, lonely environments. Researchers said that social excitement helps lose weight.

However, social activities make some people worried. Study writer Dr Matthew During said, “I’m still amazed at the degree of losing fat that happens. We often think of stress (压力) as a negative thing, but some kinds of stress can be good for your health.”

Explaining how new technology had reduced the chance for people to communicate face to face, he added, “It’s not just because of being short of exercise and high calorie foods, but an increasing lack of social activities. • 27、   China covers large areas and has a great population. Different living habits have always been an interesting topic in the country. Recently, another difference between southern Chinese and northern Chinese became a hot one: the way people shop at markets.

People from southern China say that they always buy what they need for just one or two meals. It is normal for them to buy half of a Chinese cabbage, two potatoes and 0.25 kilograms of beef at a time.

However, one may be laughed at if he does this in the north. Instead, buying vegetables and meat enough for a week is usual. Also, you can buy a small amount of fruit, such as a single apple or pear, each time in the south. Shop owners even help you peel and cut them. But shop owners in the north hardly offer such service. And many fruits are sold in baskets and boxes.

The difference could be due to the different weather.

Food can be kept for a long time in the north, as it is usually cold and dry there. Many northern Chinese have the habit of storing food, especially for the long winter. But the hot and wet weather in the south makes southern Chinese buy just enough food for one meal or one day, or else the food may go bad.

1In southern China, people usually buy _________ at a time.

    A. a small amount of food B. a large amount of food

    C. enough food for a week D. a lot of meat and vegetables
