24、 Andrew Holleman, a 12-year-old boy, loved playing in the open land near his home. The land was wet and forested, and made a home for the birds, other animals and many different plants. It made the perfect place for him to study and get to know the nature.
Suddenly it was announced that the “empty” land would be improved by a lot of houses on it. The plants would be removed, the animals would run away and most would probably die. Then the wet soil(土壤)would be covered with extra grounds.
When he heard about the news, he was not happy. He was very worried that the land and water would be polluted.
Andrew wrote down clearly all the research he had done about the area, and how the houses would affect(影响)the local environment. He sent letters to members of local government and television reporters. He also called on his neighbors to oppose the building of the houses.
Andrew's teachers described him as gentle, shy and active. His classmates also admired how much he knew about local animals and plants, and the environment. Each day after school, Andrew went door-to-door, to ask the people to sign(签名), who did not want the houses to be built. In only one month, he got the signatures of 250 people. “Save the whales!"That's what the picture on lake Smith’s bedroom wall said. Jake liked having a picture that said something important: that showed he cared. He just never expected to get a chance to save a real whale, one right in his own neighborhood.
It was a Saturday morning when the newspaper first reported the whales' coming. A group of the animals were swimming close to the beach in Jake's hometown. All the local people rushed out to. the beach to see them. They were expecting a beautiful show, better than a movie, but nothing they'd have to do anything about.
Then one whale swam in the direction, directly towards land. It came in with the waves, and when the waves receded, its huge body on the sand. Suddenly,Jake and his family and all the others were no longer sightseers. They had to become rescuers. A few people ran towards the animal. They pushed and tried to force the whale back into the water, but it was no use.
An animal rescue(营救)service team soon arrived in a truck with heavy lifting machinery,to help move the animal. Jack and his family couldn't do much on the beach,so they went back to their house and made sandwiches and hot tea for the rescuers. At least,Jake thought, they could help in some way.
Back at the beach, they offered the food to the rescuers and were happy to see that it was needed. It was getting dark. Some people lined up their cars along the beach and shined the headlights on the sand. The rescuers would not give up. After trying many times they were finally able to lift the whale into the water. 26、 About thirty years ago, China was known as the “Bicycle Kingdom”. But the two-wheeled transports were soon replaced by their fuel-powered competitors ( 对手).
Recently, normal bikes are seen across China, with an increasing number of people choosing riding instead of driving to schools, to workplace or to go sightseeing. The introduction of bike-sharing plan, led by new companies, like Ofo and Mobike, has brought the heat to a new level.
According to the research made the first week of this year, there were about 5.85 million users of Mobike while Ofo had 1.4 million users. People can unlock the shared bikes by using their Smartphones. The bikes are set with GPS and can be left anywhere in public for the next user. They are popular among many Chinese people as they provide an effective way to the“last mile” problem, which means the final part of a person’s journey. “In places where the underground cannot reach, where it’s difficult to change from one kind of transport to another, it’s so easy to get where you want to go with Mobike,” Hu Hong, 29, told AFP. She rides to her Shanghai Company every day.
However, the plans also have some problems, such as illegal( 违法) parking, damage and stealing. Last month, two nurses in Beijing were caught by policemen for five days for putting locks on two shared bikes. And in December, a man who stole a shared bike was put in prison for 3 months and had to pay 1,000 yuan.
Now, Chinese service runners are trying to solve these problems. For example, Mobike sets a100-point score for each user. Points will be taken away when bad behavior happens. Once a score drops below 80, the price of renting a bike will rise to 100 yuan per 30 minutes, up from 0.5-1 yuan.

27、 One day two workers were fixing electrical wires(电线) in the house. While they were working they met a problem: they couldn’t put a thin wire through a long narrow pipe. Because this pipe was long, thin and not straight. After thinking for some time, one of them, Frank, had an idea. He told his partner, Harry, what he needed.
Naturally, Harry was a little surprised. Thirty minutes later, Frank returned with two small white mice. He told Harry to hold one carefully then run away to that end of the pipe. Harry did so. Frank held the other mouse, at the other end of the pipe. Then Frank tied the wire around the mouse ‘s neck, and spoke to Harry, “Now , very lightly press the mouse.” Harry did as he was told. The mouse made a soft sound.
When the male mouse heard the sound, he began to run out of Frank’s hand into the pipe toward the sound. Of course, the male mouse was carrying the wire. Frank held the other end of the wire in his hand. After a few seconds the male mouse came out of the end of the pipe where the female mouse was. The problem had been solved. The wire was passed through the long pipe.
Everyone may come across difficulties when dealing with something, don’t give up immediately. Maybe you can get better methods to solve them if you consider it in another way.
